I do know that Deathdrone wrote about Reddit a lot so that's the persona I associate "redditor" with

frogbs, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 17:05 (eleven years ago) link

It’s the 171st most popular subreddit and most people only know about it because of Gawker clowning them for it.

This is key info here. Thank you.

only 500 people read the men's rights forum but every one of them etc etc

I feel like this thread is going to good for exposed the extent of the reddit/ilx cross-over.

a local acquaintance just got divorced and is sliding into men's rights shit on his Facebook and it's like...dude...you gotta just back away from the men's rights community

Inconceivable (to the entire world) (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Tuesday, 18 September 2012 17:14 (eleven years ago) link

I thought I was into men's rights back when Norwood Fisher was trying to get child custody. I don't know if I heard anything about it until it got brought up in the context of reddit/extreme misogyny.

how's life, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 17:23 (eleven years ago) link

In fairness, if we had a men's rights board, I would be totally okay with Gawker clowning us for it.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 17:25 (eleven years ago) link

xp: just realized that was "father's rights" and so a different thing I guess.

how's life, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 17:26 (eleven years ago) link

It's a gateway drug iirc.

Every time I look at an AmA, the comments are so loathsome that I give up pretty much immediately.

But sometimes the train wreck is just too compelling

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Tuesday, 18 September 2012 17:28 (eleven years ago) link

there's a disconnect between what some notable people (some of whom probably should know better) who end up doing IAMAs think reddit's readership is like and how it actually is, that you get a lot of cool people who aren't joss whedon getting only a few responses to the point where you can ask, say, James Fallows a question and it will probably get answered. It's kind of nice!

I don't think I 'get' reddit... I've only ever seen a couple of the ask me anything threads and they just kind of seemed like the comments section of the av club or whatever.

I quite like metafilter though. Is it considered equally hateful? Am I accidentally joining fathers4justice by reading it?!

sktsh, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 19:07 (eleven years ago) link

avclub comments are the worst, seriously

"GET CANCERAIDS LOL"

frogbs, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 19:08 (eleven years ago) link

Metafilter is much better than reddit imo, but they both have their uses. With reddit, the key is to register and then only subscribe to the subreddits that have actual interesting content.

they should just call the site horriblenerds

lag∞n, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 19:15 (eleven years ago) link

metafilter is objectionable too, but it's right at the opposite end of the spectrum from reddit's misogyny4u, over at the the po-faced navel-observation end. We're somewhere in the happy middle, I guess?

But ye I spend time on both: Metafilter gives better link than reddit, but for tech stuff I can bear the horrible nerds on the programming reddit more than the "bro, bro, watch me pivot" clan on Hacker News

stet, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 19:16 (eleven years ago) link

(The traffic that reddit sends is astounding, btw. We more than doubled our daily average when a link got on reddit, and it wasn't even on the front page, it was buried somewhere with 5 upvotes)

stet, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 19:17 (eleven years ago) link

I think there are cooler dudes per capita on metafilter but on average it's about the same as reddit. i'd recommend straightdope over metafilter.

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 19:17 (eleven years ago) link

reddit does insane traffic which is why many people have heard of it and talk about it

Multi-xposts: people complaining about the terrible mobile web experience were probably referring to this recent experiment in deliberately breaking functionality.

The king of the demo (bernard snowy), Friday, 16 June 2023 19:22 (ten months ago) link

If you didn't encounter it, count yourself lucky. It was way more obnoxious than the single pop-up when the page initially loads; it popped up again any time you tried to upvote, respond, or post a comment, and the pop-up actively prevented you from doing any of those things on the mobile website no matter how many times you told it to fuck off.

The king of the demo (bernard snowy), Friday, 16 June 2023 19:25 (ten months ago) link

*upvote, respond, post a comment, expand a comment thread, "show more replies," or do basically anything other than look at the OP and the top two or three responses.

i thought Reddit CEO Steve Huffman came off bad in his interview with The Verge

this new one with NBC News is disqualifying

Reddit's unpopular changes were inspired by Elon Musk's layoffs & cost-cutting (like not paying bills) at Twitter. insane. https://t.co/xE4aqxVkl1 pic.twitter.com/opBU6gD2Bk

considering reddit's role in building up the cult of musk there would be a symmetry to the platform getting totally muskified

which would presumably mean the return of explicit nazism among other things

Rough couple of weeks for these guys.

Reddit’s month may be going from bad to worse.

Hackers from the BlackCat ransomware gang, also known as ALPHV, are threatening to leak 80 gigabytes of confidential data from Reddit that they claim to have stolen during a February breach, according to a post from the group on the dark web, which was reviewed by CNN and an independent cybersecurity expert.

In their post, the hackers claim they first demanded a $4.5 million payout “for the deletion of the data and our silence” in April. After receiving no response, the group said it followed up on Friday with an additional demand: Reddit should withdraw a controversial new pricing policy that has sparked a protest from some of the platform’s most influential users.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 20 June 2023 18:40 (nine months ago) link

Some subs are now allowing NSFW posts in protest as Reddit has a policy of not allowing ads on NSFW subs. Check out /r/interestingasfuck as one of these.

Also to avoid the ugly desktop UI try old.reddit.com. As long as that's still around I'll still use Reddit at least on desktop. Reddit Enhancement Suite still works with it, fortunately.

Spez's recent comments are only going to embolden protests, trolling and backlash. I wouldn't be surprised if a clone successfully pops up by the end of the year and Reddit experiences the very kind of exodus that helped buoy their success back in 2005.

This chart from SubredditStats show the daily comments and posts for 5 major subreddits: r/news, r/facepalm, r/mademesmile, r/oddlysatisfying, r/mildlyinfuriating.

And that’s how we've now ended up with a Reddit full of r/MadeMeSmile. And, just in case you're curious about what that looks like — four of the top five Reddit posts were reposted TikToks.

As the moderator of my town's subreddit, I suppose I should have some sort of doomed-to-fail opinion about data privacy. If it wasn't opvious already, only "AI" buzzword compliant b.s. is getting funding - all of it spent to monetize the shit out of everyone and everything.
