at first i only knew of reddit because my wife started forwarding me a bunch of the image memes from whichever board of theirs focuses only on pictures. i started clicking around the site and ended up on one of those creepy boards dedicated to men and how terrible women are and have p much written the site off since. i mean, i'm sure there are some just fine places on reddit, but i got a really uncomfortable vibe from it.

Men’s Rights thing is probably overstated. It’s the 171st most popular subreddit and most people only know about it because of Gawker clowning them for it. Not totally fair because anyone can create a subreddit about anything and with a user base of millions, shitty niche areas will arise. That said, “Redditors” are mostly awful 20 something white male alpha nerd atheist gamer types who think they’ve got the world figured out and they’re insufferable and have terrible taste in everything.

there's a disconnect between what some notable people (some of whom probably should know better) who end up doing IAMAs think reddit's readership is like and how it actually is, that you get a lot of cool people who aren't joss whedon getting only a few responses to the point where you can ask, say, James Fallows a question and it will probably get answered. Metafilter is much better than reddit imo, but they both have their uses. With reddit, the key is to register and then only subscribe to the subreddits that have actual interesting content.

It's not the dream search engine experience you're asking for, but it does successfully produce as you say "actual humans writing about x" at least as much if not much more than the other examples you mentioned (youtube comments etc).

xp lol how is it any worse than x-ing out of a mailing list popup on a recipe website? this isn't like yelp where it literally forces the app to open if you want to do anything on mobile. it's just an overlay that you press one button to get out of.

CaaL, i have no idea what you're talking about with it asking you to login. i'm opening it in the chrome app in incognito so i'm not logged in, and it never once prompts me to. i click "continue" and that's it.

and if comments are closed after 6 months, that's not a reddit thing, that's another thing specific to certain subs (or threads). i've rarely seen that. for threads that get a lot of search engine attention, it's not uncommon to see people leaving thank you comments years after it was made.

bigger issue is that Reddit is just really bad for conversation, it's hard for any comment longer than a couple sentences to get more than a few upvotes, which means most people just won't see it, and even if someone replies, if you start replying to that you just wind up in a horrible nesting situation which quickly becomes utterly unreadable

i think this is another thing that's mostly true for r/all detritus which tends to be the worst of humanity and the worst of democracy. reddit isn't built for actual conversation at that scale. it's designed with a fundamental flaw that incentivizes posting quickly over all else. standard message boards where the posts all stay in one place will always be better.

it may take a few searches but my hit rate on finding answers via reddit is a million times better than anything else available. i don't really know what you're looking for or how you're looking for it, but i don't really relate to this.

I was late to Reddit, only joined 4 years back bcs everyone'd abandoned FB and I hate twitter and wanted new grist.

TBH I have not experienced a jot of what the fuss is about. I dont use 3rd party OR the native app - I just browse Reddit in Chrome. Oh, the site determinedly tries to force me onto the app every time I refresh with a rude popup but I just doggedly dismiss it.

I've said it upthread but if you stick to yr own corners its a mostly pleasant experience. Gaming reddits are especially useful for detailled tips and charts and whatnot. My greatest disappointment is that /r/melbourne has decided to just close shop completely and move to Discord and I agree with ppl upthread - it is NOT a replacement, Discord is just a fucking roided up IRC client and I'm too old and busy to fuck with instachat. The whole point of forums is you can take your time to read and respond when you want.

I do miss Usenet, on that front.

If you didn't encounter it, count yourself lucky. It was way more obnoxious than the single pop-up when the page initially loads; it popped up again any time you tried to upvote, respond, or post a comment, and the pop-up actively prevented you from doing any of those things on the mobile website no matter how many times you told it to fuck off.

Hackers from the BlackCat ransomware gang, also known as ALPHV, are threatening to leak 80 gigabytes of confidential data from Reddit that they claim to have stolen during a February breach, according to a post from the group on the dark web, which was reviewed by CNN and an independent cybersecurity expert.

In their post, the hackers claim they first demanded a $4.5 million payout “for the deletion of the data and our silence” in April. After receiving no response, the group said it followed up on Friday with an additional demand: Reddit should withdraw a controversial new pricing policy that has sparked a protest from some of the platform’s most influential users.

Some subs are now allowing NSFW posts in protest as Reddit has a policy of not allowing ads on NSFW subs. Check out /r/interestingasfuck as one of these.

Also to avoid the ugly desktop UI try old.reddit.com. As long as that's still around I'll still use Reddit at least on desktop. Reddit Enhancement Suite still works with it, fortunately.

Spez's recent comments are only going to embolden protests, trolling and backlash. I wouldn't be surprised if a clone successfully pops up by the end of the year and Reddit experiences the very kind of exodus that helped buoy their success back in 2005.
