i like them both but i think the idea of one basic pattern but with panels cut w/ different bias (am i saying that right?) is a dope idea (shirt at right)
― the late great, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 19:21 (eleven years ago) link
i ALMOST bought the shirt at left when it came out but i chickened out

re: hawaiian patterns, i mean it's def nice to see large scale prints and esp floral patterns get the cosign from mainstream men's style but -- ugh, i feel like you can go all in crazy or just stay out, but half-assing is pretty ugly recipe for dad style
i mean is it just me or does this subdued hawaiian just look geriatric? in a bad way? the whole look, really

tlg: i like the bias cut panels on that (the bias is the 45 degree diagonal between the perpendicular warp / weft of the weave)

ok so i'm using the word sort of correctly. does bias cut mean specifically 45 degrees or can it be any angle other than 90 / 0 degrees w/r/t warp and weft.

i lost my navy hat at a bar last night :-(
oh well, my vintage dude has two authentic ones from particular ships, guess i'd better grab those while i can

tlg: srs question: isn't sporting a navy hat in such a huge navy town when you're not a navy guy kind of nagl?
― ❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 19:48 (eleven years ago) link
no, because
1) my roommate was a gunnery sergeant
2) when i worked at scripps oceanography i was on a naval DARPA contract
3) tons of non-military dudes wear this shit as a "support our troops" kind of thing
4) actually there are a ton of navy guys who look even more weedy and nerdy than me so probably nobody can tell
5) i don't think i wear it "ironically" or have that look about me
― the late great, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 19:51 (eleven years ago) link
i don't know, maybe i do look like a gigantic douchebag, but i wear a ton of military type shit (m-65s, fatigue pants, shirts with epaulettes, even some camo) and i have a fair # of military buddies and i am kind of a military tech nerd along tombot lines so it's basically in keeping with my personality
the other part of the srs answer is that being middle eastern has caught me 10x as much flak with military dudes as anything i've ever worn so i pretty much don't think about it

i think of it like wearing a USC sweater, you don't have to have attended USC in southern california or even have a family member to support the trojans (fuck the trojans imo btw)

i have thought about it though and i think if confronted on it i would go for #1, 2, 3 and then probably just take off the damn hat if that didn't make whoever happy

oh and i'm p sure bias is specifically 45 degrees -- you see bias cuts mostly in womenswear because they drape & move more fluidly that cuts on the grain
― real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:14 (eleven years ago) link
than*
ah, i know the bias cut dress idea but i didn't realize it was specifically 45
― the late great, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:23 (eleven years ago) link
well, i guess most trad neckties are bias cut too -- weaves stretch along the 45 diagonal, so it helps ties knot evenly, dimple well, and the stretch helps prevent the seams tearing
― real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:32 (eleven years ago) link
oh yeah, all of my ties are 45 degrees except the squared-off skinny chambray one i already regret buying

reasonable, right?

uggh though the unnecessary selvedge line is such early 10s artisanal moustache douchery

i have a bit of a fetish for square-end skinnies, esp old rooster ties with crazy prints! even though i am prob a bit too thick to rock a v skinny tie, i do anyway
selvedge line is the sort of detail i don't really care about, SUCH FINE MATERIALS, DO YOU SEEEE yeah uhm

hehe i say this as a dude with *only* jp selvedge jeans
― the late great, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:47 (eleven years ago) link
idk, i think the selvege is only really telling & worth showing if the fabric was milled by some real high quality manufacturer that has a signature selvedge, and in some cases it makes sense bc selvedge is more resilient than a cut edge, otherwise it's kind of a nonsense detail because every woven fabric has a selvedge
― real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:49 (eleven years ago) link
right!
i think the japanese jeans with red selvedge it's like indicating that it was woven on those old levi's looms we hear so much about?
but on a chambray tie from brooklyn it's silly
― the late great, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 22:01 (eleven years ago) link
