seems pretty big up north, all this dubstep stuff. all i've heard about from hippy/crusty/forest party types for the last, like, 3 years.

i seem to dig completely different stuff to them tho, this guy played me a bunch of tracks a while ago, and i wasn't very good at listening at the time (he was scary, had scary strong weed) he seemed to enjoy the low end if it was all over the place.... the dubstep i've liked is where its super controlled, where you can hear the actual tones in the bass, i also like the filtering/screwing to be suble rather than the sloppy listen to all this fx kind of stuff.

and of course the klaxons are going to get more attention.

warning, bad stereotyping!

pretty boys with not much to say vs. dreadlocked stoners with a fuck-you/carefree attitude

Something wot I blogged yesterday that relates a bit to the discussion:

Listening to the excellent Ammunition And Blackdown Present: The Roots Of Dubstep I couldn't help but lament the fact that the lively and inventive rhythmic side of this music is being increasingly cast aside for the instant gratification of the huge drop and the lfo'd sub-bass. I find myself more and more drawn to dubstep which steers away from the worship of the drop and takes a holistic approach to track building: Pinch's Qawwali, Shackleton's hand-percussion meditations, Burial's other-wordly productions, Skream's electro synths, Mala's upbeat dancefloor bombs, etc. Of course the halfstep wobbler is not something to be lamented wholesale ... My hope for 2007: balance.

jimn (jimnaseum), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 16:41 (seventeen years ago) link

god are these guys actually going for the "drop" aesthetic? DID DRUM AND BASS TEACH YOU NOTHING??

acid waffle house (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 16:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Well when you listen to a song where absolutely fuck all of any interest happens, where there is no melody, no intricate drum programming etc., that's the only conclusion that can be drawn. I don't think it's the norm yet but Loefah/Coki copyists with nothing of their own to bring to the table seem to be a bit of a trend.

jimn (jimnaseum), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 16:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Boring wobblestep--- might be a bit better if they used more than about 3 notes, started deploying sabbath style riffs, but even most of the riffs are shit in that particular style. I was at he last DMZ and the quantity of that stuff with incredibly unintricate half step 70bpm drums actually bored me so much I was falling asleep on the dance floor, before deciding to leave (relatively) early.

Was Skream "less celebrated" than Boxcutter E-40 on your side of the water then? I'm slightly surprised by that

seriously though i played some dubstep for my students (who are all huge e40 / wolfpack / hoodstarz / snap fans) and they were all "this doesn't bump enough" or "this is too slow"

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 15:55 (seventeen years ago) link

and yeah, i've been trying to fit some of my krumping routines to a dubstep soundtrack and i gotta say i concur

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 15:56 (seventeen years ago) link

wait... where's the misplaced modifier??

also, shackleton, shackleton, shackleton!

shudder redduhs (shudder), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 22:18 (seventeen years ago) link

well, technically there isn't a misplaced modifier - you can tell from the verb tense what the subject is ... but the line still scans funny

"i doubt i'll have speakers big enough or smoke enough weed"

reads too close to

"i doubt i'll have speakers that are big enough or smoke enough weed"

which would be a badly misplaced modifier

"seriously though i played some dubstep for my students (who are all huge e40 / wolfpack / hoodstarz / snap fans) and they were all "this doesn't bump enough" or "this is too slow""

I was listening to the instrumental for "Girlfight" and thought pretty the same thing about dubstep. I mean why would a crunk/snap fan even bother.

siah thx for the mix on the dj thread ... i've been listening to it daily!!

but what did you mean to draw my attention to w/ that one??

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 4 February 2007 01:44 (seventeen years ago) link

I just wanted you to hear the juxtaposition of some electro and dubstep, its the direction I'm hoping to take my stuff.

I thought you'd appreciate it.

Its very satisfying to know that you like it.

Siah Alan (Siah Alan), Sunday, 4 February 2007 02:14 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah i started listening to it right after i started listening to alex smoke's "sci fi hi fi" mix for soma ... i caught a similar vibe off it, looking at detroit-style techno in a new context (here dubstep instead of minimal) ... again, nice work!!!

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 4 February 2007 02:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, basically I'm hearing the same stuff when I listen to D1 as I do when I hear Aux 88 or Drexciya. Or Arpanet for that matter.

I'd like it to be genuinely techno inspired, as opposed to what drum and bass people think of when they say techy.

Back in the day Benga and Skream got called Croydon techno by grime Djs, thats how I first heard of them.

Siah Alan (Siah Alan), Sunday, 4 February 2007 02:27 (seventeen years ago) link

"plasticman"!!

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 4 February 2007 02:28 (seventeen years ago) link

so do dubstep djs wear army surplus military gear or technical sportswear?

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 4 February 2007 02:28 (seventeen years ago) link

the styling still seems more d+b than detroit techno unfortunately

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 4 February 2007 02:30 (seventeen years ago) link

there was a semi-funny article in mixmag last month about "how to dress and pose for your promo shot" divided by dance genre

the really funny one was the drum and bass one, which advised "make sure your posse photos look like the christmas photo for the residential staff of a maximum security prison. NO SMILING! this is jungle warfare, blud"

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 4 February 2007 02:32 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm more on the Dickies and a hoodie end of things.

I've met Mala and Joe Nice, I don't know, they dress like DJs I guess?

Yeah, unfortunately.

Keep your ears open for Apocalypse by Whiteboi and Kommonazmuk.

only thing i can think for dubstep = dreadlocks is a must

For those complaining that halfstep is too slow you may be happy to know that tracks with swing are enjoying a revival.

To be fair you won't hear half of this shit out at a a dance! (in my experience).

jimn (jimnaseum), Sunday, 4 February 2007 03:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Bunch of them are forum producers giving out 320s now I look at the list again. Not that I'm being critical of you or the mix (which I'll give a listen to when I get up tomorrow)! Just saying, maybe there are swinging tracks, but they're not the mass of what's getting played out.

jimn (jimnaseum), Sunday, 4 February 2007 03:53 (seventeen years ago) link

I think TRG's stuff is starting to get some play, he's got a couple of 12"s coming out as far as I know.

But yeah I'm half a continent away from the nearest dubstep night, and across the world from the UK.

I'm going by 2nd hand testimony here.

Siah Alan (Siah Alan), Sunday, 4 February 2007 04:14 (seventeen years ago) link

Contrary to my own prediction I really dislike DJ Clever's Science Faction mix ("Qawwali" excepted) - dire dour dirgy techstep without the speed as compensation. I guess that's what happens when you can only source tracks from Planet Mu and Hotflush.

I'm pissed that I spent money on it.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 8 February 2007 12:40 (seventeen years ago) link

dirgestep is the future.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Thursday, 8 February 2007 12:43 (seventeen years ago) link

God I hope not.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 8 February 2007 13:09 (seventeen years ago) link

maybe deadstep. i think its gonna get a lot more variations. dubstep could actually be quite fruitful and spawn a lot of its own microgenres. i wouldnt be surprised.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Thursday, 8 February 2007 13:12 (seventeen years ago) link

much better

I didn't like that DJ Clever mix much either... I should really give one of those Tempa mixes a go someday!

Peverelist - he really really likes minimal techno doesn't he?

gekoppel (Gekoppel), Thursday, 8 February 2007 15:04 (seventeen years ago) link

dunno... to me it sounds more like Convextion/Deep Space-era Model 500 worship (plus a healthy dose of the Hard Wax axis) than any modern day 'minimal'

a (rslvd), Thursday, 8 February 2007 16:03 (seventeen years ago) link

although I'm thinking more in terms of texture than rhythm

a (rslvd), Thursday, 8 February 2007 16:06 (seventeen years ago) link

two weeks pass...
Just saying, maybe there are swinging tracks, but they're not the mass of what's getting played out.
I've kind of already been completely proved wrong about this (saw Benga playing out, listened to a bunch of recent rinse sets). Dirgey halfstep hegemony = false alarm.

jim, Monday, 12 March 2007 01:06 (seventeen years ago) link

Fuck, this is turning into one of those rolling thread soliloquy things, isn't it?

Blackdown was right on his Pitchfork column. Joker's Kapsize EP is great. First track "Stuck in the system" is the standout.

JME's Derkhead is also great, I know I'm a little late getting to that but it's true.

Dodo-dodo-doo-doo-doo-doo-dooooo. Benga and Coki - Night is still great.

jim, Saturday, 24 March 2007 01:01 (seventeen years ago) link

"Bury The Bwoy" is really good as is this Skream vs. G-Squad thing.
