set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 17 September 2012 23:23 (eleven years ago) link

Anyone watchin' Revolution tonite?

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Monday, 17 September 2012 23:28 (eleven years ago) link

Undecided

It seems very Jericho/Falling Skies, neither of which I ever got into

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 17 September 2012 23:30 (eleven years ago) link

It's super high concept, which the networks seem unable to wrangle in the long term.

Old Lunch, Monday, 17 September 2012 23:33 (eleven years ago) link

I'm sure it will be garbage just like every other drama on NBC in the last 10 years.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Monday, 17 September 2012 23:34 (eleven years ago) link

Which was better: The Event, Persons Unknown, or The Cape.

god, NBC is really a black hole for drama

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 17 September 2012 23:46 (eleven years ago) link

Anyway the answers are The Cape, Chase, and Outsourced. lol

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Monday, 17 September 2012 23:53 (eleven years ago) link

Mr Veg liked Outsourced. I couldn't even be in the same room when it started

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 17 September 2012 23:54 (eleven years ago) link

I thought it was impressively terrible, whereas the other two were just sad and boring.

The Cape just looked straight up lolsy from the getgo

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 17 September 2012 23:58 (eleven years ago) link

It was terrific/awful.

I think I have some kind of acquired genetic aversion to that kind of tv - I can't get any enjoyment out of much bad tv these days

I only watched the first episode but then I read all the recaps.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Tuesday, 18 September 2012 00:03 (eleven years ago) link

Journeyman was great, the first half of the first season of Heroes, Southland, and Prime Suspect were too. NBC hasn't been able to sniff around a winning drama in well over a decade, as three of those four were canceled and Heroes was milked beyond it abilities.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 00:46 (eleven years ago) link

NBC's a disaster across the board.

Old Lunch, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 01:22 (eleven years ago) link

southland and prime suspect were both great -- southland still is, just not on nbc

i've hidden a white teen on Crimedoer Mountain (reddening), Tuesday, 18 September 2012 11:05 (eleven years ago) link

it's really too bad they blew through a quarter season's worth of plot in the pilot. so much world building to be done in the trek to chicago, the search for the brother, the unveiling of the archer-guy's treachery. maybe the most rushed drama pilot I can recall?

Clay, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 11:42 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i think one of the (many) persistent problems with all these high concept post-Lost shows is how they never seem to know how to dole out the story or how much to show in the pilot to hook you.

some dude, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 12:05 (eleven years ago) link

I was kinda theorizing that the post-lost shows focused so much on the forced world-building and lazy character cliches without giving plot out directly (b/c they didn't have any, only a concept) that this pilot was trying to create a contract with the audience. Look! We have tons of plot! And more reveals than you can imagine! Without realizing how hacky and convenient it all would feel.

Clay, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 12:31 (eleven years ago) link

The Cape just looked straight up lolsy from the getgo

I have great news for you. Mrs. D. and I watched the "Revolution" pilot on Hulu a couple of weeks ago, and when they finally revealed the bad guy, I said, "Is that the douchecanoe who starred in 'The Cape?'" And it is!!

a shark with a rippling six pack (Phil D.), Tuesday, 18 September 2012 12:47 (eleven years ago) link

the whole thing with "nate" the sexy double-crossing archer guy was so rushed and silly. and in the promo for next week's episode the main girl says "is your name even nate???" and he broodingly says "no," like this revelation means something and has any impact whatsoever.

i've hidden a white teen on Crimedoer Mountain (reddening), Tuesday, 18 September 2012 14:13 (eleven years ago) link

ok so what's worth watching that's coming up? Forgot that the Mindy Kaling thing had started so that, s3 of Boardwalk Empire I guess, next season of Homeland. Is there an AV club rundown of promising pilots yet?

Mob Doctor was surprisingly good!

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 18 September 2012 14:23 (eleven years ago) link

x-post the big relevation that General Whatshisname was the guy the hero was driving with the nights the lights went out is the kind of reveal that would have come several seasons into Lost.

dow, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 15:16 (eleven years ago) link

That's heartening to hear about Last Resort, as that's the only show on the fall slate that I've been looking forward to.

Old Lunch, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 15:21 (eleven years ago) link

the biggest thing with Revolution is the medieval schtick just raises so many mundane questions, I get more lols out of it than anything. I laughed out loud at the furniture in the General's quarters in the final scene. Did they raid the local Civil War museums?

I'll admit to kinda liking Billy Burke tho, so I will keep watching.

Re: Revolution, I thought the actress that plays Charlie was terrible.

Minor detail that sticks in my craw about shows like this: Miles made a big point about that bottle of single malt Scotch being the last one in the area, and he obviously loves Scotch, but when he gets up from the bar to leave with them, he leaves it behind! Pour the damn Scotch in the glass back in the bottle, and take it with you!

Will continue to watch, though.

nickn, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 19:00 (eleven years ago) link

yeah Charlie was kind of annoying

As Charlie and her crew (which includes the woman her father was banging before he was killed) search to find her uncle so that he can help them find her brother, music that sounds like it's coming from a shitty RenFair Game of Thrones cover band (they have one song: the theme) plays.

Nhex, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 05:22 (eleven years ago) link

SOA has some great moments + cast members but so, so many headsmacking moments, plot developments, bits of dialogue, and esp. resolutions. Plus Jax sucks.

Simon H., Tuesday, 11 December 2012 07:25 (eleven years ago) link

Admittedly I have not seen the new season since the S4 finale made me swear off it forever.

Whereas I feel like Justified has been going mostly from strength to strength, though apparently they're going with some sort of mini-arc structure this season, which could either be great or terrible.

Simon H., Tuesday, 11 December 2012 07:28 (eleven years ago) link

haven't each of the previous seasons have mini-arc structures?

some dude, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 11:31 (eleven years ago) link

that kevin bacon serial killer show looks like it could be pretty bitchen

turds (Hungry4Ass), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 11:39 (eleven years ago) link

But see that seems like another concept that can't support more than one season because, really, how many times can you serial kill Kevin Bacon?

Disturbance At The Hard-on House (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 14:27 (eleven years ago) link

Six degrees of serial killing.

this will surprise many (Nicole), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 14:32 (eleven years ago) link

part of what i love about american horror story is that a season-long mystery is waaaaay more manageable than the series-long shit that's regularly botched

da croupier, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 17:56 (eleven years ago) link

was it always going to be a different story/cast each season or was that just decided at some point? i was really confused when i started seeing the ads for the 2nd season and the 1st season was nominated for "mini-series" emmys.

some dude, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 19:00 (eleven years ago) link

haven't each of the previous seasons have mini-arc structures?

Kinda, but there's also always been a "big bad," which doesn't seem to be the case this time around.

Simon H., Tuesday, 11 December 2012 19:02 (eleven years ago) link

ah yeah i haven't seen anything about the new season so by mini-arc i thought you meant 'this season's villain'

some dude, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 19:06 (eleven years ago) link

season 3 of Veronica Mars was a network-dictated mini-arcs season, and that sucked

President Keyes, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 19:07 (eleven years ago) link

yeah but CW was shook about viewers following long term narratives, FX is not

some dude, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 19:09 (eleven years ago) link

i'm not the biggest Justified fan but they've earned my trust that they know what they're doing, will see how it goes

some dude, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 19:10 (eleven years ago) link

well then this is becoming a weekly habit... but seriously it's a good thing last resort got cancelled because it is insanely stupid (and i am too for continuing to watch i guess). also, the show feels really disjointed. it's like the writers are trying to squeeze in every imaginable plot without really linking them to one another. for example this episode shows christine captured and sam going after her but iirc last episode ended with them on a boat controlled by pakistani soldiers, so wtf happened in between ?

Jibe, Friday, 14 December 2012 11:10 (eleven years ago) link

i'd be willing to bet the network just doesn't give a fuck and is airing episodes out of order now

Poli oppa lice style (some dude), Friday, 14 December 2012 11:29 (eleven years ago) link

it might also be that i'm misremembering last week's episode. thinking about it (why am doing this to myself), christine was taken away by one of the seal guys, so the whole captured in philippines makes a little bit more sense i guess. how sam knew where she was taken to though remains a mystery to me.

Jibe, Friday, 14 December 2012 11:36 (eleven years ago) link

they wouldn't air eps out of order would they ? like how common is it for that to happen ? and what's the logic behind such a decision, if you have all your episodes shot and ready to be aired why do it out of order ?

Jibe, Friday, 14 December 2012 11:37 (eleven years ago) link

it's not as common as it used to be but TV history is rife with examples of networks airing episodes out of order out of some weird network logic. given that the show is already canceled i just wouldn't be surprised if they pulled something like that.

Poli oppa lice style (some dude), Friday, 14 December 2012 12:13 (eleven years ago) link

i thnk the eps are in order but they're trying to cram in a lot of plot so they kind of skip over things.

Jibe, Friday, 14 December 2012 12:43 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i haven't watched the latest episode yet (and tbh haven't paid close attention to the last few episodes before that) so i'm just saying

Poli oppa lice style (some dude), Friday, 14 December 2012 13:06 (eleven years ago) link

It's been airing in order.
