ugh i tried to listen to an episode of this for the first time in a long time last week and immediately got pissed at maron again. it was the andy daly episode and he was doing the same thing of trying to force someone into a box (in this case, being a nerd) that they didn't really belong in and continually hammering at it despite the interviewee's protestations.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 10 September 2012 15:51 (eleven years ago) link

This Andrew W.K. episode is bad. And not good bad, but buncha shit bad.

I haven't started it yet, but the youtube teaser where they talk about "Bridge Over Troubled Water" had me nodding my head.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 10 September 2012 15:53 (eleven years ago) link

There are moments, and Andrew does his best, but Marc and musicians don't really mix.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 10 September 2012 16:19 (eleven years ago) link

OTM but the musician things seem more and more frequent now. I do have to kinda lol at Maron's timing with his recordings and how he always just seems to miss big events to talk about. Like interviewing Russell Brand just before the divorce and Aaron Freeman just before the whole Ween breaking up thing.

And Stanhope before his Louie episode!

schwantz, Monday, 10 September 2012 16:38 (eleven years ago) link

The Andy Daly interview was not great - I felt bad for Daly in that one

Maron needs to get over his hangups about nerds.

I thought the WK interview was pretty interesting--especially when he talking about the weird pranks he would pull

Listen to this, dad (President Keyes), Monday, 10 September 2012 18:13 (eleven years ago) link

thought the Carrie Brownstein ep was terrible - hearing him talk about "lesbian punk" bands and bringing up the sexuality of S-K members in 2012 was pretty o_0

Would really like to hear the story from the viewpoint of the other Soul Coughing dudes, Doughty comes across as a huge douche and intensely unlikable dude.

Maron on Jay Mohr's podcast was fun.

Cosign on this. Worth seeking out.

He probably already interviewed her, just before all of the brouhaha, as he has the worst timing ever.

googles amanda palmer brouhaha

amanda palmer's open letter to robert smith

(title is misleading, as that's an old topic)

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 13 September 2012 22:42 (eleven years ago) link

I found something about Steve Albini dissing her. Is she darkwave or something?

Listen to this, dad (President Keyes), Thursday, 13 September 2012 22:44 (eleven years ago) link

Nah, the short of it: she made gobs of money via kickstarter for her most recent album ($1.2M) and now she's going on tour, but she'd rather recruit talented fans at each stop to comprise her band rather than pay professionals to tour with her. Also, there's quite a bit of discrepancy about how all the money she DID make via donations was actually spent.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 13 September 2012 22:46 (eleven years ago) link

is she pompla or moose

Jim Rash on Thursday!

Johnny Fever, Monday, 17 September 2012 16:14 (eleven years ago) link

what are the odds Maron asks him about the new showrunners?

Listen to this, dad (President Keyes), Monday, 17 September 2012 16:14 (eleven years ago) link

lol he probably did the interview before Harmon was fired.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 17 September 2012 16:15 (eleven years ago) link

Key & Peele were really funny. I've only watched that show once, but maybe I'll make a habit of it.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 17 September 2012 19:58 (eleven years ago) link

I just finished that episode. I'd never heard of them. Will totally check their show out now.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 17 September 2012 20:19 (eleven years ago) link

I never wanted to watch the show, the trailers looked awful. Were they really that good?

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 17 September 2012 20:29 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, definitely.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 17 September 2012 20:58 (eleven years ago) link

I've been listening to some of the free podcasts recommended above, and I'm coming around on this guy. He can be a great interviewer and I'm finding a smaller percentage of these to be depressing the more I listen.

This guy seems to say "POW! I just shit my pants..." a lot. Is there an origin story to that?

stURGEON & musKEY (how's life), Thursday, 20 September 2012 13:19 (eleven years ago) link

he only says it when he's plugging Just Coffee dot co-op

the origin is that caffeine can stimulate the bowels

he is joking that the coffee is so good that as soon as he sips it he shits his pants

it is an advertising slogan

they sponsor the show (and have since pre-podcast) so he says it a lot

┐(´ー`)┌ (sic), Thursday, 20 September 2012 13:34 (eleven years ago) link

hope this helps

Based on what Rash said about the 4th season I think you're right

sic plagiarized that answer from Parade magazine celebrity questions.

canonical casual cordouroy (Eazy), Thursday, 20 September 2012 14:00 (eleven years ago) link

There was a good article in the Madison alt-weekly about the owner of Just Coffee and his ambivalent feelings about the fact that 99% of people who know the name of his brand associate it with involuntary explosive defecation.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 20 September 2012 14:25 (eleven years ago) link

nbd, really. I wasn't planning on sharing this podcast with anyone I love anyway.

I haven't listened yet, and was actually making a joke related to Maron's unlucky interview timing, but I can't believe it happened again! Maron interviews someone, something big involving that someone happens, Maron releases the interview after that something big happens without being able to address that issue. Poor guy.

ha, i missed that.

(i live a block away from just coffee and smell it roasting all the time)

(which makes me shit my pants)

xpost

It's a little hard to tell, but a couple of times Rash talks about season 3 as though it's still airing, and then talks about how Harmon does his Joseph Campbell narrative arcs over whole seasons, and how he can't wait to see where he goes with it in Season 4. But then Maron starts grousing about network bean-counters--but that could mean the interview was recorded when Community's future was in doubt. No mention of Harmon's firing at all. But is it possible Maron has had this interview in the can since May or earlier?

Listen to this, dad (President Keyes), Thursday, 20 September 2012 15:37 (eleven years ago) link

But is it possible Maron has had this interview in the can since May or earlier?

Yeah. He'll sit on interviews sometimes so they'll coincide with something (like the start of the tv season). Although, since Community isn't coming back until October, I'm not sure why he'd put the Rash one up now. I guess he just has so many in the pipeline that its time had come.

Just listened to and loved the JB Smoove interview.

He's one of the best so far as dealing with the mandatory Maron moments:
1) "What does your brother do?" "He's just a working man." (as in: he doesn't identify himself by his job)
2) "How did you get the SNL gig?" "It just happened."

canonical casual cordouroy (Eazy), Thursday, 20 September 2012 18:27 (eleven years ago) link

JB Smoove won that show by never stopping to breathe. Marc could hardly make it about himself.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 20 September 2012 19:06 (eleven years ago) link

I loved all the whining in the K&P interview about all the libs on Maron's back for asking Indian food.

that was some Amanda Palmer level strawmanning

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 20 September 2012 19:37 (eleven years ago) link

Okay, yeah, I've never really watched Key and Peele's show, but this episode is great. Particularly love the fantasy Hollywood game, I want to play!
