i'm not sure how people from "michicgan" speak tho

I learned last weekend that it really depends on which part of Michigan you're talking about.

Ha I thought you said he was from Michoacan.

"No worries" has crossed. over, IMO, and doesn't sound affected. But saying it in every sentence is annoying.

What about "no wuzzles"?

No puggles.

Carl and my friend who has a lot of communication with Brits bc she works for a British firm picked up "sorted" in the sense of "taken care of" "or "fixed." It's funny bc she hates my fascination with dialects and she avoids affectations but that word snuck up on her. It's an involuntary Briticism.

(*・_・)ノ⌒ ☆ (Je55e), Friday, 7 September 2012 14:42 (eleven years ago) link

I picked up "sorted" from ILX, you jerks.

carl agatha, Friday, 7 September 2012 14:43 (eleven years ago) link

Nice one, top one, sorted

Remember how I kvetched that my coworkers get me confused with another coworker with the same first name despite us looking/acting/sounding nothing alike?

I put in my notice, but it seems everybody thinks the Other Jennifer is leaving this job and not me. I was standing in our admin's office talking to her and another admin, and our admin told the other admin, "You know Jennifer is leaving, right?" (referring to me, who is standing right there participating in the conversation) and the other admin said, and I quote, "People keep telling me that. What the fuck do I care if she's leaving? We never talk anyway." People had been telling her that the other Jennifer was leaving.

Sigh.

carl agatha, Friday, 7 September 2012 21:15 (eleven years ago) link

HR once brought the other Jennifer into a confidential meeting about my compensation package. The other Jennifer figured it out when they gave her papers to sign and my name was printed on the bottom.

carl agatha, Friday, 7 September 2012 21:16 (eleven years ago) link

Jesus Christ that is unbelievable!

kinder, Friday, 7 September 2012 21:29 (eleven years ago) link

It makes me feel like I'm in a David Lynch movie sometimes. Or I'll have little existential crises, like... am I really here? Do I really exist?

carl agatha, Friday, 7 September 2012 21:45 (eleven years ago) link

You should start referring to the other Jennifer as White Jennifer.

(*・_・)ノ⌒ ☆ (Je55e), Friday, 7 September 2012 21:47 (eleven years ago) link

That would be hilarious but would not clear up the confusion.

carl agatha, Friday, 7 September 2012 21:48 (eleven years ago) link

I'll be Regular Jennifer and she can be Bizarro Jennifer.

carl agatha, Friday, 7 September 2012 21:49 (eleven years ago) link

And call yourself Mexican Jennifer.

(*・_・)ノ⌒ ☆ (Je55e), Friday, 7 September 2012 21:50 (eleven years ago) link

Ah what the hell, just go with Black Jennifer.

L to R: my boss, Bizarro Jennifer, the Hymn Singing Security Guard*, the coworker who wouldn't go to lunch. Not pictured because I don't exist: me

carl agatha, Friday, 7 September 2012 22:01 (eleven years ago) link

*I was doing my thing in the stall and in comes the Hymn Singing Security Guard, singing a hymn, and she pushed open the door of the stall next to mine, stopped singing and shouted, "GOOD LORD!" I peeked in there on my way out and the less said about what someone did to that toilet the better, but it was enough to make her take the Lord's name in vain so you know it was bad.

carl agatha, Friday, 7 September 2012 22:02 (eleven years ago) link

omg carl, I'm glad you got a new job, but also SO sad because these people you work with now!!! David Lynch world + Being John Malkovich + holy crap crazy!

dying @ other jennifer stories, i would abuse that situation very badly i think

Randy Carol (darraghmac), Friday, 7 September 2012 22:57 (eleven years ago) link

ultimate goal of course is to get paid but otherwise have nobody know you exist

Randy Carol (darraghmac), Saturday, 8 September 2012 00:05 (eleven years ago) link

If I were craftier, I could leverage this into some kind of ghost payrollee scheme. And I wouldn't even have to be related to an elected official!

carl agatha, Saturday, 8 September 2012 03:14 (eleven years ago) link

eh

so i was mini-promoted (acting basis kinda thing, in a department not likely to exist in another few weeks, but still) on wednesday. but complications arising from the fact that i'm on a permanent contract as opposed to temp (95% staff here are agency) means that the boss called me in on thursday to rescind the title and the bucks after HR raised hell.

i'm better off in that the work is supervisory and generally better (experience, cv boost, off the phones and away from braying mouths) but jeez i kinda wish he'd checked his facts before he told me i was getting a raise.

anyway.

Randy Carol (darraghmac), Saturday, 8 September 2012 09:38 (eleven years ago) link

oh god! What an immense tool. :( sorry darragh.

Wow, yeah. Fact check! That really sucks.

carl agatha, Saturday, 8 September 2012 13:32 (eleven years ago) link

shit dmac, I'm in a very similar boat. I'd like to relay the details, but I'm headed out the door at the moment and I feel like I'd have to actually draw several office org charts to fully convey what's happened. Similar results though. No title. No raise*. About 3x as many responsibilities. No staff to delegate the work to. It's been a year. I discussed the whole thing with my new director and I believe her when she says she's trying hard to make something happen.

*When he was leaving, I asked my former director how large my pay increase would have been and he said that the last guy to hold that position was earning $10-$15K more than me.

centipede burt s (how's life), Saturday, 8 September 2012 14:34 (eleven years ago) link

well hold on like- i'm better of than i was heading into work on wed morning, in every way but official title and salary. it was just a bummer to get lifted and dropped like

your sitch sounds *much* worse tbh, sympathies

Randy Carol (darraghmac), Saturday, 8 September 2012 16:35 (eleven years ago) link

and xp the boss emailed HR, told them he was bumping me up, asked would there be any issues, was told no! he's pushing to get something arranged, and was v apologetic, i'm p easygoing about this stuff tbrr.

Randy Carol (darraghmac), Saturday, 8 September 2012 16:36 (eleven years ago) link

Overheard a bunch of coworkers in the break room discussing ("discussing") Serena Williams, e.g. "she looks like a monster."

carl agatha, Saturday, 8 September 2012 23:23 (eleven years ago) link

I telecommute and my co-workers are also my neighbors. Sometimes. I work for my dad's old company but he is dead.

I mean, I gladly do most of the heavy lifting. Don't get paid much but it's "expected" that me and my family make the biggest contribution and pull the most weight.

Meanwhile it seems everyone else who doesn't have the "family connections" get a bigger salary and, um, no thanks.

None of them came to my father's funeral even though it made them rich and bought them second houses and vacations and all.

i don't even know who to blame for this but whoever decided to turn off autocomplete in the to: and cc: sections of our email, FUCK YOU

some lazy grad student sent two 50+ page docs to the printer, and either never followed up or saw the "change toner" sign and decided to let someone else do it. so i did it, and now i have to wait for all that shit to come out for mine to come out.

rayuela, Monday, 17 September 2012 20:04 (eleven years ago) link

can't you cancel the job? i have no qualms about doing that in those situations.

gyac, Monday, 17 September 2012 20:22 (eleven years ago) link

it occurred to me to do that right after i posted. so i did.

she came out of her cube when she heard the printer going (but after i had hit cancel), which to me that says she knew it was stuck and just waited for someone else to do it.

rayuela, Monday, 17 September 2012 20:25 (eleven years ago) link

justified!

Not exactly coworker here, but a consultant is driving me batshit. He requested an AutoCAD background file from us, so I sent it over right away. Got a call that this didn't work, he's running an older version of AutoCAD and needs it to be saved as Release 11. Now, I'm not sure how exactly to explain this to those unfamiliar with AutoCAD but Release 11 came out in 1990. As in 22 years ago. We're running AutoCAD 2011 at my office, and saving it back that far isn't even an option. I'm working on it, but no luck with something he can open yet.

Anyway, my IA kicks in when this consultant sends out an email to the client, copying me, that says "the architect isn't being cooperative and getting me the files I need, our work may be delayed". His first request for a file came in at 7:50 this morning. It is now 9:45 and I've sent him five different files in an attempt to get him one that works. Its not my fault you're running 22 year-old software, so don't bitch to the client to make it look like we aren't being helpful when I'm busy bending myself over backwards to help your Luddite ass.

I'm doing an Autocad course through a government scheme at the moment, the teacher last week said that if we went to autodesk we should be able to download the programme.
Might be an option,if that is possible outside Ireland. I haven't looked into it myself.
Though having a computer that wants to run a '90 version presumably means he wants a much newer computer anyway. Is the guy a Luddite?

Stevolende, Monday, 24 September 2012 14:48 (eleven years ago) link

Sounded like teacher meant for free there too. Might have more to do with us being students that wouldn't cross over into business but still might be an option once he gets with the programme and gets a functional computer.

newstart in my dept. is driving me crazy with his crappy work ethic, constant sighing and inane questions/statements. a sample from today:

- "Is Hallowe'en the 25th?"
- "The year should end on 21/12, the winter solstice. I feel quite strongly about this."
- "What kind of 4s do you do?"
- "Blacking up is sometimes acceptable... if done 'sensitively'." (!)
- "Is there still time for a coffee?" (asked at 16:45)
- "I fucking hate Carrot Top." (apropos of nothing)

skrill xx (cozen), Monday, 24 September 2012 18:23 (eleven years ago) link

- "I hate affirmative action. It's just another kind of racism." (!)
