cafe cherrier on cherrier/st-denis is p great brunch spot

flopson, Thursday, 6 September 2012 19:42 (eleven years ago) link

ah, brunch... i used to eschew it but i'm getting over that. i guess it depends on what you're looking for - i tend to go middle-of-the-road, not a straight-up diner but not a gourmet place either. and i like a certain comfy and not-too-loud environment. that said, i don't go out for brunch very often, so...
in mile-end-ish:

i like
cafe souvenir on bernard, esp because terrasse
velo cafe on beaubien
boite gourmand on laurier

and screw it, i will plug the site i write for: http://www.tourisme-montreal.org/blog/where-to-eat/the-mile-ends-best-brunches/

lawrence (a bit $$ but hella worth it... also usually a bit of a wait... BUT WORTH IT)
lemeac (same except for the wait)
vieux velo (cheaper, chiller, dece eggs benny...not crazy great but nice)
beautys (classic)

i keep forgetting to bump this thread but a couple of things made me think of it:

have you all seen the first issue of CULT, which afaik is the autonomously published new magazine by ex-Mirror staff?

& also, ty for the recommendations for Montreal stuff to do. Jean Talon was rad, & I came back with vegetables in colourways I hadn't seen before, & the falafel at green dragon is real nice. I could do without the gherkin but yeah real good.

i was in the states for a few days and came back today to extended summer and so got on my bike to go have beers on a terrasse. oh extended summer.

ha yes. thanks. no it was good, i got it to take out & was worried as soon as i remembered all other instances in which i've tried to eat something coated in tahini sauce while on the move, but it was v neat. i wish that more places did the thing where they smash the falafel up a bit before including - this is a falafel sandwich protip imo - but yeah i dug it, i should try their other stuff. i have to try the crazy cheap downtown place w/$2 falafel & soup next.

the weather is so so nice at the moment.

i'm trying to get to dam funk on wednesday, i have no idea how free-pop-mtl-shows work though, like with things like this i assume i will intend to go & then that the event will be populated by just everyone who had their shit more together than i did.

yeah. but wait that godard thing is like a zillion hours long, & hilariously is a double feature. i think shoah will be my marathon thing, provided i can squeeze it in. CDP programming so good so far.

I saw you from across the room at pop opening party but was in conversation and missed you. Tell cold to go away so you can at least come late-night dancing.

xp re: trampolining

let's get the banned back together (schlump), Sunday, 23 September 2012 03:13 (eleven years ago) link

It is cool! It can be cool. You have to have a high tolerance / appreciation for extreme Torontoness.

whiter than... this? (Ówen P.), Sunday, 23 September 2012 13:02 (eleven years ago) link

i am going to visit my gf at her parents in ottawa nxt week. will maybe spend some time in montreal before i head back to uk. anything good going on week after next?

tpp, Sunday, 23 September 2012 13:09 (eleven years ago) link

i don't know exactly what torontoness is, though i remember it being raised in the sheila heti thread which i guess figures in part re: trampolining. the vague precis of TH is that people are encouraged to talk but outside their field of expertise, right, capturing enthusiasm for learning rather than didactic teaching of knowledge, &c.

not sure what's happening week after next, i will keep a lookout

let's get the banned back together (schlump), Sunday, 23 September 2012 14:07 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, that's sort of it. But it's also the debate about whether or not it's "a good idea", the "amateur hour as anti-capitalist commentary" schtick, it's that debate that keeps Toronto's gyroscope spinning. Any time anybody does anything there's always somebody who makes a pooface and smugly asks "what the fuck are you talking about?" [/Toronto]

whiter than... this? (Ówen P.), Sunday, 23 September 2012 14:28 (eleven years ago) link

yeah. i don't know i was skimming the old n+1 article on mcsweeney's, yesterday, & it kinda reminded me of some of the cloying aesthetics of new-weird-tangents-on-existing-forms - so believer interviews which first set out to establish their novel or non-professional approach to interviewing, the stated form the selling point. & i guess that could presumably be leveled at this? but then at the same time there is doing something versus not doing something & it isn't like anyone has to attend. i went to the david byrne thing, here, last night, which was really good. it mainly kinda reminded me of the virtue of just conversation in public, freewheeling town-hall-style discussion that is valuable for offering a bunch of perspectives from people you might want to listen to, or who have like been to other countries & stuff. the salient things aren't necessarily the things that people are most qualified to talk about but the things which catch your attention, or that arise out of the difference between participants. so i can imagine TH being good. you get something out of most things, even if it's just the Torontonical joy of criticising.

let's get the banned back together (schlump), Sunday, 23 September 2012 15:10 (eleven years ago) link

my mtl-based involvement negates the torontoneity

Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Sunday, 23 September 2012 16:02 (eleven years ago) link

Montrealism is the exact same thing as Torontoism
Except replace "criticize self" with "criticize Toronto"

whiter than... this? (Ówen P.), Sunday, 23 September 2012 17:11 (eleven years ago) link

lol

flying scrotus (flopson), Sunday, 23 September 2012 17:12 (eleven years ago) link

ftr i disagree with that (ime the extent to which the kind of montrealers who would go to the equiv of trampoline hall don't so much criticize toronto so much as criticize the idea of having to get a job) but it's still a great aphorism

flying scrotus (flopson), Sunday, 23 September 2012 17:23 (eleven years ago) link

Montreal is Torontorious for its Torontoism

let's get the banned back together (schlump), Sunday, 23 September 2012 18:25 (eleven years ago) link

ppl talk less about toronto in mtl than ppl in toronto generally believe tbh

Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Sunday, 23 September 2012 20:20 (eleven years ago) link

(a belief rooted deeply in torontoism)
