Hey dudettes, I just ran a poll past everyone that works in my office (dermatology) and the verdict? Total bullshit, not worth the money, use a washcloth.

kate78, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 22:35 (eleven years ago) link

I use cetaphil and a disposable buffpuff, fwiw

kate78, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 22:35 (eleven years ago) link

wait a sec i don't use any puff or sonic implement
should i?

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 22:39 (eleven years ago) link

Why didn't you run this poll before my lunch break?

carl agatha, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 22:40 (eleven years ago) link

Busy day? Did you save your receipt?

kate78, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 22:40 (eleven years ago) link

I did. I'm still going to try it out, though. Not because I don't believe your derma colleagues but because I want to play with my new toy.

I think Ulta's return policy is 60 days w/ a receipt if you hate it, so I can have my spinning face brush and use it, too.

carl agatha, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 22:42 (eleven years ago) link

Not to dis yr colleagues, but my personal trust in dermatology when it comes to acne, rosacea and the like is not very strong...

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 22:47 (eleven years ago) link

Not that I have much trust in cosmetics companies either!!

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 22:47 (eleven years ago) link

facecloths, the soft kind, have served me well though, yes

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 22:48 (eleven years ago) link

None of us use it, and we look FANTASTIC.

kate78, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 22:49 (eleven years ago) link

What is your secret

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 22:49 (eleven years ago) link

retin-a, suncreen.

kate78, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 22:50 (eleven years ago) link

i will rep for retin-a and western medicine on acne as well, fwiw

horseshoe, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 22:51 (eleven years ago) link

I've knew a derm who did rep for them if only because they made people clean their faces really well. Who knows.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 22:54 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah my secret is never forgetting to put C1indoxil and faux retin-a on my face tbh. I thank the pharma industry for this, I do.

And when I don't eat sugar or carb-heavy anything, my skin gets more 'refined' looking or whatevs. But chocolate...

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 22:55 (eleven years ago) link

x-post - I mean that it made people do it more often and for a good length of time or whatever. It's $30 and I haven't gotten a pimple since I started using it every night so I figure it can't be hurting any.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 22:56 (eleven years ago) link

any opinions on BB cream?

USADA Bin Dopen (dayo), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 22:59 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah sort of how the toothbrush works too - you just end up cleaning more thoroughly - it's not magic but it helps
xp

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 22:59 (eleven years ago) link

Yes, exctly.

Dayo - we've talked about bb cream in here before iirc.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 23:00 (eleven years ago) link

I think most BB talk is on the cosmetics thread? Can't remember

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 23:01 (eleven years ago) link

Oh! Yeah, you're probably right.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 23:01 (eleven years ago) link

haha okay. also - thinking of starting to use cetaphil face moisturizer with the SPF 50, since I seem to be getting a few new facial moles every year. but have never used sunscreen before. worried!

USADA Bin Dopen (dayo), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 23:02 (eleven years ago) link

Cetaphil is generally a really good brand. I think I even have that exact one (it's either Cetaphil or Cerave) and I like it a lot.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 23:04 (eleven years ago) link

what are you worried about?

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 23:06 (eleven years ago) link

idk! all my life I've had relatively good skin on my face (like the only part of my body, for real) and that's without washing, using facial cleansers, etc. so I have a general vague ~worry~ anytime I try out something new on my face

USADA Bin Dopen (dayo), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 23:09 (eleven years ago) link

*knocks on wood*

USADA Bin Dopen (dayo), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 23:09 (eleven years ago) link

People usually grow new moles (nevi) until about the age of thirty or so. Remember your ABCDs

kate78, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 23:10 (eleven years ago) link

I got two moles checked out a few months ago! I have a big 'fried egg' mole in my scalp

USADA Bin Dopen (dayo), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 23:11 (eleven years ago) link

I canceled my followup because the derm said that she was just going to see if they had grown any bigger within 2 months and I was like, I can just do that at home!

USADA Bin Dopen (dayo), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 23:12 (eleven years ago) link

kate78, et al, what is your opinion on this http://www.amazon.com/PMD-B005NQRPFO-Personal-Microderm/dp/B005NQRPFO/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

just1n3, Saturday, 15 September 2012 23:49 (eleven years ago) link

I'm having an extra-scrupulous day. I should have cleaned house but I was too lazy to start, so instead I tweezed and plucked and extracted and face-masked and manicured and I guess I had to deal with that stuff sooner or later, judging from the amount of gross that was in my skin, but it felt kind of compulsive. Urrrrgh.

purveyor of generations (in orbit), Sunday, 16 September 2012 23:39 (eleven years ago) link

dayo everyone should wear sunscreen

BTW I might be an estee lauder convert. I am loving my time zone night cream and night renewal serum. It seems like something fauncy my mother might use, too. Even though it's not very fauncy at all.

just1n3: I've never seen that before, but it looks like fun?

kate78, Monday, 17 September 2012 18:52 (eleven years ago) link

Guys I've never has rosacea but since I read about the mite poos I've been washing my face with antibacterial soap. I know this will most likely result in a world of other problems from dry wrinkly skin to excellerated mite evolution but I can't help myself!!!!

I think about mite poop every time I wash my face

is sandblasting a thing?

has anyone had broken capillaries on their face treated with lasers? i keep acquiring more of these, related to rosacea. also what is this mite talk? i'm pretty sure my rosacea is not caused by mites since i always have outbreaks in tandem with migraines.

I had some broken capillaries treated with IPL, but tbh new ones just keep coming so I give up and "treat" them with concealer.

working on being more *attentive* to my skin in general

got some amylactin so I can try to finally work on my bumpy arms. also switching up my face-washing to use the cetaphil cleansing bar for a while (still with cerave moisturizer, bc the soap is a touch too drying for me to go without completely). in general my face has calmed down a fair bit, I have worn makeup a few times lately without any real bad after effects, but I'm interested to see what a change will do.

oh and I know this probably for the nail thread but I found this cool tub of nail & cuticle cream that's for horses hooves? but for people? lol

Love Aveeno for body (not for face), glad it's working for you!

purveyor of generations (in orbit), Saturday, 13 October 2012 14:36 (eleven years ago) link

I can't believe I am saying this but coconut oil really helped with my husband's bumpy arms! Cheap, too (at least if you get it at an international store and not Whole Foods).

Horse stuff has a long following with humans--Mane and Tail shampoo, etc.

quincie, Saturday, 13 October 2012 22:30 (eleven years ago) link

Trader Joe's has super cheap coconut oil (I'm a huge fan of it as a moisturizer).

carl agatha, Saturday, 13 October 2012 22:38 (eleven years ago) link

hmm I just bought some coconut oil to cook with, maybe I'll nick some and try it

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 13 October 2012 23:29 (eleven years ago) link

somewhere on ilx there is a discussion of keratosis pelaris, from which I first heard the coconut oil thing. I was a total skeptic, but tried it on dude's arms, and arms got better! Hardly a randomized controlled trial, but for two bucks it is certainly worth a shot. At worst, you'll have bumpy arms in otherwise silky smooth skin!

I have two deluxe samples of the new Corrective Lift line from Chanel.... ARGH I AM IN LOVE WITH IT, AND IT'S SOOOOOO EXPENSIVE.

keratosis pelaris: vaseline and saran wrap.

kate78, Monday, 15 October 2012 22:20 (eleven years ago) link

well today is my first day of smelling like a giant coconut macaroon
so far, so good
do y'all put this stuff on your face or just bod?

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 12:35 (eleven years ago) link

I put it on my face at night. It's too greasy for daytime. I use it as cuticle oil, too, but don't use it on the rest of my bod because I think it would make things I touch/sit on oily and I know it would attract cat hair.

I've been meaning to try it as a hair treatment but haven't had a day where I felt like hanging out with a grocery bag on my head for a few hours.
