"The White Album". Not by any means my favourite Beatles album, but still way better than the most overrated Stones album.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 26 January 2009 02:29 (fifteen years ago) link

Even "Satanic"?

I can't vote, having not heard the album outside of the flexidisc, and once in a girl's car (didn't know what it was, wasn't struck)

But then, I'm sort of revisiting the Stones thesedays, so maybe one day ...

.. I kinda think I'd still vote White Album, but fair's fair.

exile. the first time I heard it, it just sounded so new to me - so much going on. and I really do think of "rocks off" as pretty much the most ass-kicking album opener of all time.

Mark G, Monday, 26 January 2009 15:00 (fifteen years ago) link

beatles the better band. but exiles the greatest.

Michael B, Monday, 26 January 2009 15:11 (fifteen years ago) link

Fuck, Exile, no question.

"1965: rubber soul vs out of our heads (beatles, easily)
1966: aftermath vs revolver (beatles)
1967: between the buttons vs sgt pepper (close to a tie, though i still give the edge to the beatles)
1967 part two: their satanic majesties request vs MMT (Stones)
1968: beggars banquet vs the white album (Stones)
1969: let it bleed vs abbey road (stones)
1970/71: sticky fingers vs let it be (stones)"

Fixed your wrongness. Though, frankly, it's mostly because of the match-ups (and because the American releases are confusing as hell to keep track of). Like, Aftermath would beat Sgt. Pepper for me, but Between The Buttons can't. And Satanic only barely clears MMT for me, mostly because I hate MMT and think only most of SMR is crap. But from Beggars on, there's no question.

1964: A Hard Day's Night Vs. Rolling Stones: Beatles landslide
1964: Help! Vs. Rolling Stones No. 2: Beatles landslide
1965: Rubber Soul Vs. Out Of Our Heads: Beatles landslide
1966: Revolver Vs. Aftermath: Better Stones albums, but still Beatles by a lot
1967: Sgt. Pepper Vs. Between The Buttons: Beatles, but also a good Stones album
1967: Magical Mystery Tour Vs. Their Majesties Satanic Request: Beatles still wins, ahead of the best Stones album
1968: The White Album Vs. Beggar's Banquet: Both dipping a bit in quality from being too fixated with "roots" and leaving psych pop behind. Still Beatles
1969: Abbey Road Vs. Let It Bleed: Landslide win for The Beatles.
1970-71: Let It Be Vs. Sticky Fingers: Still Beatles although this is one or the worst Beatles albums.

Go away.

Exile wins this, tho White Album is the only Beatles I've ever actually contemplated owning.

It's like would I rather watch Saturday morning cartoons or read Hemingway? I love the shit out of Hemingway but most days I'm gonna pick Saturday morning cartoons cause I ain't always in the mood to edify myself.

what the hell are you talking about

― i like to fart and i am crazy (gbx)

This made me laugh. Hoos, if you don't like it, it's ok. The Rolling Stones are far from being medicinal, and you don't have to swallow it if you don't like the taste.

I voted for Exile, the rest of the thread sight unseen.

Hmm, so is this another where all the posts ref the Rollings, yet the White album wins?

X-101, Monday, 9 February 2009 10:05 (fifteen years ago) link

Both are the act's most overrated, but The Beatles >> Stones, so "The White Album" still has this.

wow! hearing only their major singles i have never had any interest in the stones, but now i'm tempted to check out this album. i'm not a huge white album fan, but still.

blimey, good turn out for this one. i have a lot of time for both of them.

twelve years pass...

Getting some bad vibes from the White Album when listening to it for the first time in a long time. Thought about other bad vibes albums and the first one that comes to mind was Exile. So Exile wins above pretty decisively on Best, but which one has the Worst Vibes?

Exile: I could see this album soundtracking some bad things, say a bank robbery, or overdosing on heroin, but this album seems fundamentally positive to me. Chaotic Good?
White: This album "soundtracked" the Manson slayings. It seems really unhinged on some level. Lawful Evil?

Exile.

Legalize Suburban Benches (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 25 November 2021 04:28 (two years ago) link

On sober reflection in the morning I'm having a hard time separating my question in the revive re: bad vibes from the fundamental poll question of which is better. At this stage of my life I would much rather listen to Exile and if I could magically transport myself and friends (dead, or alive but scattered) to a bar to shoot pool and the shit over beers, Exile would be a contender for an album I could put on that would be perfect.

Exile is more laid back and cool even though it rocks, while the White Album is more aggro and insidious, though acoustic and mellow in parts. Maybe?

hocus pocus, alakazam (PBKR), Thursday, 25 November 2021 13:27 (two years ago) link

Makes sense.

Sporting with the Fbclid (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 25 November 2021 13:30 (two years ago) link

Beggars Banquet is the White Album equivalent for the Stones: folk guitar, funny accents, fiddles, Mellotrons making strange sounds, psychedelic hangover in a roots context.
Not having seen it, I suspect the new documentary is the Exile equivalent for the Beatles.

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 25 November 2021 15:19 (two years ago) link

it's hard for me to me to compare an album where all the songs fuse together with an album where all the songs repel each other like magnets, but I've never gotten a bad vibe from Exile; there's too much love in it for that, even if it's a fuzzed-out hungover kind of love.
