Flashes and dog's eyes definitely don't mix well

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Thursday, 30 August 2012 20:18 (eleven years ago) link

Aw this thread is making me so happy and teary - my inlaws had a pit named Sam, he was put down about 10 years ago. He was a big dumb sweetheart. He used to carry around this big river rock in his mouth, and he would just hang out on the back porch quietly gnawing on his rock.

We don't have a dog now but if we ever do get one I'd def consider a pit. They can be so loving.

Back when Mr Veg lived at home, Sam would crawl into bed with him during the night -- but he'd crawl in from the bottom of the bed and he would sleep up against Mr Veg's legs with his nose up against his bum. He said that cold nose was like an alarm clock, lol

Aww. Cold, wet animal noses are one of my all-time favorite things in the whole world.

We gave Daisy a big frozen bone from the fancy pet supply store by my office and she finished the entire thing in the time it took for me to bake a frozen pizza. A big, thick cow bone, completely gone! Daisy got jaws.

My next door neighbor and my friend have both adopted pits. Well, at least half-pits, I am not sure. They're insanely energetic but pretty much the sweetest dogs I've met. I feel really bad because my friend got his from a lady who rescued it -- she lived across from some guy who was kicking the dog! Who the hell kicks a dog? :(

I had to write a piece on local vets a while back, and I interviewed one vet who specialized in rescuing pit bulls. Some of the stories he told were so heartbreaking. He had one, Daisy, who had been *set on fire*. Who the FUCK does that. I mean, that just made me want to cry right there. Anyway over time they fixed her up and cared for her and eventually she was adopted out to a couple who ended up getting her trained and certified to become a companion dog in the children's burn unit at a local hospital. <3 <3 <3

We had a chance to repeal our county's pit bull ordinance two weeks ago.

We didn't.

three weeks pass...

For what its worth, my nephew and his wife recently adopted a pit puppy that had been abandoned during Hurricane Isaac, and last Tuesday it killed his 12 year old Lhasa Apso (incidentally named after Hurricane Gustav) while both dogs were in the back yard with "parents" away. A brave neighbor whose children watched this through the cyclone fencing tied the pit up, to keep him from thrashing about with the Apso's body. In the aftermath, my nephew's landlord revoked their lease variance to permit dogs, so they also had to give up a mutt Jenny that my 2 year old grandnephew Wyatt adored.

Hate to say it, but I'm relieved it was Gustav, and not Wyatt.

one month passes...

Since my boss got a pit bull that she brings to work every day, I've noticed pits absolutely everywhere, and I am now head over heels crazy for them. They're sweet and they're really funny dogs.

My boss doesn't take her pit to the dog park b/c of other owners' reactions to her b/c of her breed, and b/c little tiffs between dogs are inevitable, but there's a good chance the pit bull will get blamed, and that could lead to bad things.

Oh, what I meant to say was that when she boards her pit bull, the boarders put her in with the little dogs b/c she is mad for little dogs, and she gets very nurturing with them. I've seen her with little bichons and what not, and she does seem to be way into them. It makes me want to give her a big smooch. She's about 60 lbs, and it's adorable seeing her move her being gentle and affectionate with the little ones.

aww

my neighbors have apparently been training theirs really well, if he's sitting outside on a leash and I come home he no longer runs to the fence and goes crazy, just kind of checks me out and looks chill

otoh my friend's dog is still a goofball and jumps all over

OH WHAT A VICIOUS BREED

Adorable.

Our office dog is afraid of salt shakers and other small bottles, and she reacts like that if you set down a treat and the salt shaker next to each other.

What's the appeal of pit bulls?

It has been my observation over a lot of decades that the breeds which are most often trained to be 'attack dogs', such as pit bulls, german shepards and dobermann pinschers have personalities that tend to form very deep and very loyal attachments.

They're extremely sensitive to their owners and they both mirror and magnify how their owners treat other people. How these dogs are socialized is ultra-critical to how they act as adults. They're just as likely to be emo as vicious, depending on how they were brought up. As a rule, though, they will react strongly to how they much of a threat to their owner they think you are.

This makes me very wary of them, but it makes me very aware of how their owners act, too. And if their owner isn't visibly around, this makes me super-wary of them.

ok that is pretty cute

my friend who is a hairdresser adopted a 2-year-old pit bull a couple of month ago and has somehow managed to make her the softest dog ever, like silk this dog's fur

the other pit bull in my life is less soft but very cute and sweet and jumps really high when catching frisbees
i am still more of a cat person though, prob can't really change that...
