that herringbone/floral dress is pleasantly 90s imo

lotsa cute dresses on asos, but i don't really need any more special occasion wear because i don't have that many special occasions
where do you guys wear these dresses? are people getting more dressed up to just go out on a normal weekend than they used to?

maybe i am a slob?

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 19:31 (eleven years ago) link

yeah I think the reason I never ordered from ASOS is that everything seems too fancy for office, and because I have worked in offices for so long 98% of what I buy is office appropriate and maybe one crazy, sparkly NYE dress a year. but then I wear all those office clothes out at night too. basically, I am boring.

oh I got that crazy leopard print dress in the mail and it looks pretty great in a terrible way. bringing my inner drag queen out!

I think I may be. I just bought a New Order shirt. I am too old to be buying this shit! It's very pretty though and will be nice under a cardigan with jeans. No more casual stuff though - I need nicer adult clothes. They're all so expensive and I just hate trying things on. I'm a shitty shopper. I still have teh ASOS dress I bought in the spring sitting in the top of my closet. I never returned it or had it tailored to fit so it has just sat there unworn.

My office is pretty causal too. I'm wearing a denim pencil shirt and a cute top today with flat sandals. It would be strange if I came in any more dressed up than this. People would think I had an interview or something.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 19:36 (eleven years ago) link

Some of the dresses on Asos Curve are fancy but not uniformly so. I bought this dress to wear to a wedding this weekend, but I'll totally wear it to work once it's sweater weather (to cover the back, which I think is not entirely work appropriate).

Basically any dress that's at the knee or longer and not sequinned or body con I'll wear to work. Tights, a cardigan, and flats can take the shine off just about any dress.

carl agatha, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 19:36 (eleven years ago) link

i guess part if it is that i
* cannot dress sexy for work (carl is right though, cardigans/flats are like sexy dress antidote)
* do not go clubbin
* do dress to impress my date, but my date has known me for 13+ years now and has never paid much attention to my clothes anyway so that's kind of a lost cause
* if i am going to a show alone: no sexy dress; if i am going to show with male friend (this is usually the case): no sexy dress

when am i supposed to wear more than one sexy dress per year? i usually save it for the annual christmas party but i would love to manufacture more opps because those dresses are cute!

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 19:39 (eleven years ago) link

Add opaque tights (and a safety pin) to that cardigan flats combo and you could wear this to work:

carl agatha, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 19:41 (eleven years ago) link

Two safety pins. One for the boobs and one to keep the train from getting caught in the train doors.

carl agatha, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 19:42 (eleven years ago) link

I could dress up so much more for work than I do. My only rule is that swear to god I am not wearing anything with a fitted waist that is not stretchy to sit at a desk for 9 hours. If it's a swing or trapeze dress or has stretch or w/e, then bring it on as long as it covers me up.

those are both too short for teaching, i'm afraid (unless i want people to talk, which has happened to me and i do not care to repeat)

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 19:50 (eleven years ago) link

See both of those dresses look way too short for work to me. I'm tall so that they would most come just a couple inches under my butt and be a no go even with tights. That said, I love them both a lot.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 19:51 (eleven years ago) link

my 'everything' was perhaps OTT, clearly there are some office appropriate dresses - especially for my office where almost anything goes (which is fun and makes me experiment more!) but I fear everything on ASOS' site would require tights underneath anyway as most of the stuff my 5'3" coworker orders in are things I consider short on her (I am that rare prude/drag queen hybrid) and I have amazing legs and tights are ridiculous in the summer. perhaps I will order a winter dress or two. why won't they give us our bonuses so I can spend that instead of mentally spending it??

these *just* came in the mail from eshakti (fyi rrobyn I did get dinged with $20 C.O.D. this time) - excited to try them on!

i'm not looking for suggestions for things to wear to work btw, i just was wondering if maybe i am behind the curve in dressing-up-when-going-out trends (though enbb otm - those dresses are cute, just not something i could/would wear to work)

remember: people stare directly at me for HOURS at my job, it's not like i am sitting at a desk. on the days when i sit at a desk i unapologetically dress like a total slob.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 19:54 (eleven years ago) link

Laurel's dresses are cute but definitely too short for me to wear to work. Anywhere, really.

That birdie dress from eShakti is kind of amazing...

carl agatha, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 19:57 (eleven years ago) link

I went a little bananas with the job interview stress/job offer excitement shopping, though, so I do not need to go look at eShakti right now.

carl agatha, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 19:58 (eleven years ago) link

Well, I'm short and those models are like 5'9" so keep that in mind, and I would wear both of those with tights, for fall. Not for now!

check the name, no caps, boom, i'm (Laurel), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 19:58 (eleven years ago) link

And honestly, I'm prudish about my skirt lengths/self conscious about the cute little fat pockets around my knees, so.

carl agatha, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 20:01 (eleven years ago) link

Hey, the Stevie Nicks skirt I'm wearing to work today is on sale at eShakti - http://www.eshakti.com/Product/CL0022030/Tiered-lace-skirt

carl agatha, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 20:04 (eleven years ago) link

i'm totally cool with wearing super short skirts, just not to work

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 20:05 (eleven years ago) link

I'm rather fond of FF's first dress, with the tree of life motif but it seems social/cocktailly/evening. My gf would prob disagree but wear it with boots nonetheless.

I famously (infamously) told a gf a zillion years ago that I thought I would have had nice legs for a women but, still, I'm not so sure I would want to display them too prominently in a work environment and just below the knee seems 'decent' and appealing to me. Over the knee would have to be too high and 'sexy' and at the knee or just over it is nagl, imho. I'm also male, boobless and kind of lanky so it may just be an unexamined body-issue thing since the gams would be the only selling point I think I'd have.

that's really pretty, ca! be strong: I am stuck in an endless cycle. I ordered 5 dresses with gift cards from various returns/discounts.. and one of them is way too huge in the bus so back it goes for refund.. they gave me a $20 gift card for the C.O.D. charges I incurred (and now send along $10 coupons with emails saying 'thanks for ordering!') and really - I will never hit a zero balance with these guys. but this dress was one of them and fits me superbly, so hoping the two I linked to upthread will work. going to stay away from anything with a banded waist because I think that's where the bust issues come into play - I have a medium torso with most of my height in my legs.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 20:09 (eleven years ago) link

I think you are single handedly keeping Es@kti in biz at this point!!

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 20:19 (eleven years ago) link

I'm irked by a lot of mid-calf skirts I see out there now. It's just not a very flattering look on anyone. I prefer just at or right above the knee for work but like LL I am totally OK with short outside of work.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 20:21 (eleven years ago) link

LL I have a tent set up in your camp for sure. I wear dresses sometimes to work but automatically cover the top half with a top to stop me from freezing at my desk, and I have like 5 tops that I wear with jeans to work and that's about it. A lot of girls here go to great lengths to look sassy for the office with shiny hair and tailored shorts and heels and whatever but I just can't do this for work.

If I'm going out somewehre fun like drinks with my girlfriends or to a particular concert or a nice dinner I'll dress up because its' a fun occasion and I want to dress like I'm having fun. But I don't want to dress like that for work, because I don't want that kind of attention from people I don't really care to impress, and bc above all I'm there to a) work and b) be comfortable when I'm sitting down (cf Laurel)

xp heh, you might be right, E! what can I say, they're willing to cover my lady bits. Unless they ridiculously refund my entire order again when I send this dress back, I will cool down for a while.

look sassy for the office with shiny hair and tailored shorts and heels

Well, there's your problem...

carl agatha, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 20:42 (eleven years ago) link

Sorry, I have opinions about business shorts.

carl agatha, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 20:42 (eleven years ago) link

hehe it's okay. those were amused frustration caps, not angry frustration caps ;)

tailored shorts - I saw that too! I have a coworker who busts those out. why??

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 20:44 (eleven years ago) link

is this a good place to mention I bought oxyclean and soaked old white clothing in it and now they are brand new looking again? I used a toothbrush to scrub the yellow pits first then soaked about 4 hours. I can bring a long cherished but closeted white dress back into rotation now!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 20:47 (eleven years ago) link

well, one of the women who wears tailored shorts dresses like she's going to a nightclub. poufy hair, animal prints, those weird sheer tunics that are short in the front and long in the back...she's kind of a freak of nature.

but yeah there's a few women who wear them and I just can't handle how much leg they show. They're freaking MID THIGH ffs.

Gah, I was hoping there would be a picture of the dress I got without my stupid face getting in the way, but this seems to be one of the only ones. I really really like the dress. I like me a lot less.
