i guess i like exile in theory but in practice i just never enjoy listening to it as much as, like, ANY stones album up until then.

Exile. Both do a good job of capturing that it's-5AM-holy-fuck-where-are-we vibe, but Exile also gets the appropriate salvation vibe that getting real gone can bring about, whereas by the end of the White Album you're still just disoriented. But both are totally awesome.

Exile by a few lengths. A year-by-year Beatles vs. Stones would be fun to do: Aftermath or Revolver? (Answer: Beatles.) Let It Bleed vs. Abbey Road? (Stones, no contest at all.) Etc.

reading the 33 1/3 on Exile but i haven't really had the album very long and I don't feel like it will measure up to my favorite Stones albums (Beggars and Sticky Fingers), whereas listening to White Album for the first time was a big revelation for me as someone who didn't hear a ton of Beatles growing up (but did hear a ton of Stones).

I'd heard Exile plenty times, casually, in the background and stuff but it wasn't until I listened to it about 20-25 times pretty seriously before I really started to get it/really get into it

My sister called me a few months ago and asked, "Do the Rolling Stones have any other songs as good as 'Paint It Black'?" (She'd heard it on the radio at work.) I nearly dropped the phone. This Christmas, she got Aftermath (UK version), Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, and Exile.

Fixed your wrongness. Though, frankly, it's mostly because of the match-ups (and because the American releases are confusing as hell to keep track of). Like, Aftermath would beat Sgt. Pepper for me, but Between The Buttons can't. And Satanic only barely clears MMT for me, mostly because I hate MMT and think only most of SMR is crap. But from Beggars on, there's no question.

Getting some bad vibes from the White Album when listening to it for the first time in a long time. Thought about other bad vibes albums and the first one that comes to mind was Exile. So Exile wins above pretty decisively on Best, but which one has the Worst Vibes?

Exile: I could see this album soundtracking some bad things, say a bank robbery, or overdosing on heroin, but this album seems fundamentally positive to me. Chaotic Good?
White: This album "soundtracked" the Manson slayings. It seems really unhinged on some level. Lawful Evil?

On sober reflection in the morning I'm having a hard time separating my question in the revive re: bad vibes from the fundamental poll question of which is better. At this stage of my life I would much rather listen to Exile and if I could magically transport myself and friends (dead, or alive but scattered) to a bar to shoot pool and the shit over beers, Exile would be a contender for an album I could put on that would be perfect.

Exile is more laid back and cool even though it rocks, while the White Album is more aggro and insidious, though acoustic and mellow in parts. Maybe?

Beggars Banquet is the White Album equivalent for the Stones: folk guitar, funny accents, fiddles, Mellotrons making strange sounds, psychedelic hangover in a roots context.
Not having seen it, I suspect the new documentary is the Exile equivalent for the Beatles.

it's hard for me to me to compare an album where all the songs fuse together with an album where all the songs repel each other like magnets, but I've never gotten a bad vibe from Exile; there's too much love in it for that, even if it's a fuzzed-out hungover kind of love.
