should do palms or any of those weird non-descript west la places
Nothing like an anonymous transient feeling to get you in the mood to kill

Or maybe Stanton, if you want the OC equivalent.

xpost:

My tastes are perhaps not as refined as yours, and some of these may be Echo Park, but I've had good meals at:
Cafe Stella, Speranza, Alegria, Local, Aroma, Barbrix, Pho Cafe, Forage, Dusty's, Elf, Mohawk Bend. None of these are on the level of Mozza or whatever, but they're all alright.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 16:15 (eleven years ago) link

i will second forage. i've only been to cafe stella for drinks

half-worm inchworm tapeworm (donna rouge), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 16:32 (eleven years ago) link

Have any of you eaten at Don Tana's? It seems to come up a lot.

Virginia Plain, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 17:25 (eleven years ago) link

Adam, I think we're in a similar neck of the woods now?

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 17:40 (eleven years ago) link

Dan Tana's has been around forever (like 50 years) and is a small, classic Italian restaurant in West Hollywood.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 17:41 (eleven years ago) link

xp we are? You keep moving and doing things!

Aceveda (admrl), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 17:42 (eleven years ago) link

Also, I have to admit to not having tried most of the restaurants you mentioned, so now they are on my list

Aceveda (admrl), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 17:43 (eleven years ago) link

I'm up Ave 64 a bit. We should have beers at the York!

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 28 August 2012 17:46 (eleven years ago) link

I would love that, it's been too long!

Emailing you...

Aceveda (admrl), Tuesday, 28 August 2012 17:53 (eleven years ago) link

Los Angeles just seems so impossibly romantic to me.

yes!!! the reality of LA was so different to my imagining of it. i've never spent more than a couple days at a time in the city, mostly eaten up by visiting friends/specific events, would love to have a week of just exploring. a friend of mine is in the running for an arts grant, and if she wins it i'll be spending a week in LA some time after the new year, helping her sew up a bunch of books and hopefully doing some actual exploring.

virginia plains, you might enjoy a.m. homes's book "los angeles: people, places and the castle on the hill".

just1n3, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 16:31 (eleven years ago) link

^^ thank you -- I haven't heard of this book ... Will investigate.

Would any ilxors like to do some sort of food (or drink) fap with me and convince my sister why l.a. Is a good place to live? Will be in town sept 5-9.

Virginia Plain, Wednesday, 29 August 2012 17:28 (eleven years ago) link

ms. plain, i would be very interested in fapping, esp. if it's in the downtown/hollywood/silver lake area. vik said he would try to put something together.

reminder to the rest o' ye: karaoke this sunday!

Mount Analog in Highland Park is awesome, it's not some pitchfork-heavy Origami shit. you can tell the people who run it read boomkat's newsletters religiously. and the prices are just a bit lower than amoeba's i think. also probs of interest to some of you:

I caught it right at the 710/60 intersection. Very weird!

Jbr, great! I see I might get my own taste of maxaroke:)

What's the weather like out there, ie what sort of clothes should I bring? According to the people magazine style issue, Nicole richie exudes l.a. Style with cut off jean shorts over black tights and high heeled ankle boots and some sort of strange skull or ski cap.

Virginia Plain, Sunday, 2 September 2012 12:44 (eleven years ago) link

it's still hot but not sweltering -- just dress for summer but bring a cardigan or something for the evenings if you get cold easily.

the only l.a. style you need:

Sad to hear I missed thunderstorm although being here in the Southwest reminds me that I actually find LA impossibly stressful at times. I mean it is is some ways less intense than other cities but at least those places are set up so that you can actually get shit DONE. In LA, I'm lucky if I can even get two things of substance achieved even at full tilt.

Aceveda (admrl), Monday, 3 September 2012 17:17 (eleven years ago) link

In a single day, that is.

This may be very specific to me, though.

Hi everyone! What's a good place for breakfast/lunch in silver lake/Los Feliz?

Yesterday we went to little Tokyo for the first time and had dinner at sushi gen and then went to the Last Bookstore, where we stumbled upon a hushed William Gibson q&a.

Vik's planning some hijinks for tonight--if anyone wants in, get in touch.

Cliff's Edge, Edendale Grill, Fred 62 (I guess), that place on Hillhurst (?) with the courtyard/patio al fresco seating whose name I can never remember?

Probably! If it sounds like what I;m describing.

Lonely Planet recommends Alcove...

Virginia Plain, Thursday, 6 September 2012 18:31 (eleven years ago) link

good food, good people-watching.

arvo peart (get bent), Thursday, 6 September 2012 18:44 (eleven years ago) link

but the best breakfast in that area is square one, a tiny but amazing restaurant in the shadow of the big blue scientology center.

arvo peart (get bent), Thursday, 6 September 2012 18:46 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, square one is real good, tho if you're going on a weekend, be prepared for a wait

TOP FEMALE LAWYER & CARTOONIST FOR 2011: (donna rouge), Thursday, 6 September 2012 18:49 (eleven years ago) link

little dom's has a good brunch and reasonable prices. i'm not down w/the alcove as much because i think the food could be better and the coffee is some of the worst i've ever had in terms of taste and scalding heat but ymmv. it's a nice space. i prefer it at night when i can get a cocktail at big bar. i don't like home! i don't know why. like the alcove, it's a nice space. i've heard ok things about brunch at desert rose, y/n?

i do like the kitchen @ fountain and sunset. you know what's good albeit in echo park is 'the park'. dusty's is really good. local is as well, plus vv friendly service. some people like the mustard seed cafe, some do not, i'm in-between leaning towards the former.

omar little, Thursday, 6 September 2012 19:36 (eleven years ago) link

square one is good but i think since the original owner sold it it's gone downhill a tad. however the OG owner is now co-running things at the revamped and improved tom bergin's.

omar little, Thursday, 6 September 2012 19:37 (eleven years ago) link

i know it's a bit of a hike from los feliz but there are good brunches in highland park. the york has a good brunch for when you don't want to wait in line at auntie em's! no one really goes there for brunch, i've never had to wait at all.

omar little, Thursday, 6 September 2012 19:38 (eleven years ago) link

home's aight. nothing to write home about.

TOP FEMALE LAWYER & CARTOONIST FOR 2011: (donna rouge), Thursday, 6 September 2012 19:46 (eleven years ago) link

wait that was so not intentional
