exile is hemingway and the white album is muppet babies? i don't get it

i like to fart and i am crazy (gbx), Sunday, 25 January 2009 18:52 (fifteen years ago) link

white album. its ragged (like exile) but its got so much range (exile kinda does all it can within a more limited frame), does pretty much all of it brilliantly, and it still all sounds bound together (the sequencing - which must have taken ages, given how much is on this, helps a lot too). also, exiles a bit too 'americana' for me. call me close minded but i quite like british bands that still sound somewhat british ;)

weird. are you just reacting to like the rock crit mythos jizz cult of exile or something? just like "tumbling dice"..."happy"..."rocks off", i always think of exile as like a kinda drunk rowdy record....

it's all swagger and shit to me, not like some kinda ear broccoli shit

I'm confused by this. Stylistic "range," you mean? EOMS has plenty of emotional range.

I've listened to Emotional Rescue with beers and bros. Maybe I used the wrong album.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Sunday, 25 January 2009 19:04 (fifteen years ago) link

stones are a bro down band pretty much across the board IMO, way more than the beatles

Never loved Exile. Actually, never felt anything much about it. And yes, I've got teh fukker on CD and 'ave listened to it too. Usually tend to lose interest somewhere halfway through. Bugger.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Sunday, 25 January 2009 22:05 (fifteen years ago) link

Exile. Both do a good job of capturing that it's-5AM-holy-fuck-where-are-we vibe, but Exile also gets the appropriate salvation vibe that getting real gone can bring about, whereas by the end of the White Album you're still just disoriented. But both are totally awesome.

Exile on Main Street vs Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Sunday, 25 January 2009 22:16 (fifteen years ago) link

Exile by a few lengths. A year-by-year Beatles vs. Stones would be fun to do: Aftermath or Revolver? (Answer: Beatles.) Let It Bleed vs. Abbey Road? (Stones, no contest at all.) Etc.

Matos W.K., Sunday, 25 January 2009 22:26 (fifteen years ago) link

reading the 33 1/3 on Exile but i haven't really had the album very long and I don't feel like it will measure up to my favorite Stones albums (Beggars and Sticky Fingers), whereas listening to White Album for the first time was a big revelation for me as someone who didn't hear a ton of Beatles growing up (but did hear a ton of Stones).

some dude, Sunday, 25 January 2009 22:30 (fifteen years ago) link

I'd heard Exile plenty times, casually, in the background and stuff but it wasn't until I listened to it about 20-25 times pretty seriously before I really started to get it/really get into it

Mr. Que, Sunday, 25 January 2009 22:33 (fifteen years ago) link

My sister called me a few months ago and asked, "Do the Rolling Stones have any other songs as good as 'Paint It Black'?" (She'd heard it on the radio at work.) I nearly dropped the phone. This Christmas, she got Aftermath (UK version), Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, and Exile.

Matos W.K., Sunday, 25 January 2009 22:49 (fifteen years ago) link

otm. It's an album made for sampling -- a song here, a song there -- until, months later, you realize that you're enjoying the whole fucking thing.

let's see:

1965: rubber soul vs out of our heads (beatles, easily)
1966: aftermath vs revolver (beatles, tho aftermath is my favorite stones album, probably)
1967: between the buttons vs sgt pepper (close to a tie, though i still give the edge to the beatles)
1967 part two: their satanic majesties request vs sgt pepper (beatles)
1968: beggars banquet vs the white album (beatles)
1969: let it bleed vs abbey road (stones)
1970/71: sticky fingers vs let it be (stones)

embarrassingly enough, i haven't heard the first two stones albums so i can't do anything pre-65.

1964: A Hard Day's Night Vs. Rolling Stones: Beatles landslide
1964: Help! Vs. Rolling Stones No. 2: Beatles landslide
1965: Rubber Soul Vs. Out Of Our Heads: Beatles landslide
1966: Revolver Vs. Aftermath: Better Stones albums, but still Beatles by a lot
1967: Sgt. Pepper Vs. Between The Buttons: Beatles, but also a good Stones album
1967: Magical Mystery Tour Vs. Their Majesties Satanic Request: Beatles still wins, ahead of the best Stones album
1968: The White Album Vs. Beggar's Banquet: Both dipping a bit in quality from being too fixated with "roots" and leaving psych pop behind. Still Beatles
1969: Abbey Road Vs. Let It Bleed: Landslide win for The Beatles.
1970-71: Let It Be Vs. Sticky Fingers: Still Beatles although this is one or the worst Beatles albums.

This made me laugh. Hoos, if you don't like it, it's ok. The Rolling Stones are far from being medicinal, and you don't have to swallow it if you don't like the taste.

I voted for Exile, the rest of the thread sight unseen.

Getting some bad vibes from the White Album when listening to it for the first time in a long time. Thought about other bad vibes albums and the first one that comes to mind was Exile. So Exile wins above pretty decisively on Best, but which one has the Worst Vibes?

Exile: I could see this album soundtracking some bad things, say a bank robbery, or overdosing on heroin, but this album seems fundamentally positive to me. Chaotic Good?
White: This album "soundtracked" the Manson slayings. It seems really unhinged on some level. Lawful Evil?

Legalize Suburban Benches (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 25 November 2021 04:28 (two years ago) link

On sober reflection in the morning I'm having a hard time separating my question in the revive re: bad vibes from the fundamental poll question of which is better. At this stage of my life I would much rather listen to Exile and if I could magically transport myself and friends (dead, or alive but scattered) to a bar to shoot pool and the shit over beers, Exile would be a contender for an album I could put on that would be perfect.

Exile is more laid back and cool even though it rocks, while the White Album is more aggro and insidious, though acoustic and mellow in parts. Maybe?

hocus pocus, alakazam (PBKR), Thursday, 25 November 2021 13:27 (two years ago) link

Makes sense.

Sporting with the Fbclid (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 25 November 2021 13:30 (two years ago) link

Beggars Banquet is the White Album equivalent for the Stones: folk guitar, funny accents, fiddles, Mellotrons making strange sounds, psychedelic hangover in a roots context.
Not having seen it, I suspect the new documentary is the Exile equivalent for the Beatles.

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 25 November 2021 15:19 (two years ago) link

it's hard for me to me to compare an album where all the songs fuse together with an album where all the songs repel each other like magnets, but I've never gotten a bad vibe from Exile; there's too much love in it for that, even if it's a fuzzed-out hungover kind of love.
