I saw them play in Montreal a couple weeks ago, for the first time after buying Join the Army 26 years ago, and I was blown away. The band was great, Mike was in terrific form, lent a really positive vibe to the fest, and they cranked out classic after classic for an hour. I had a big stupid smile on my face the whole time.

The current incarnation of ST is indeed fantastic, I've seen them a couple times through the years and I'd say they've never been as good as they are now.

I bought an ST T-t-shirt because it looked cool* and I really liked Institutionalized when it was on Beavis & Butthead. Never found a record of theirs where I grew up. Have never heard another song of theirs.

*it was a skeleton skateboarding, or something. It said Venice Beach at the bottom and my gran asked if they were Italian.

Suicidal Tendencies (1983) - Total Classic!
Join the Army (1987) - Very underrated and I find myself playing it as much as the debut.
How Will I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can't Even Smile Today (1988) - Possibly the most underrated metal album ever.

Then there are these three:
Controlled by Hatred/Feel Like Shit...Déjà Vu (1989)
Lights...Camera...Revolution! (1990)
The Art of Rebellion (1992)

A few decent tracks, maybe I could make one really good album between them, but a lot of filler.

Never had much time for anything released more recently.

It's too bad that "2013" was so mediocre, because the current lineup is such an excellent live band.

I liked 2013 but this new one seems more focused. it's not mind-blowing but the songs are catchy and rock and I can tolerate Mike's voice more now than when he was younger, as it's deeper and less whiney. plus his band is hella tight.

lord, tho, sometimes I just wanna slap him and say "dude you're 53, why are you fronting like you're still 19 and your parents don't get you, maaaaan"

one year passes...

Last night I was pondering why the Infectious Grooves Plague That Makes Your Booty Move is never included with that Best of Fall 1991 roundup like Nevermind, Use Your Illusion, Ten, Blood Sugar Sex Magic, and Badmotorfinger. Pretty sure that everyone I knew had a copy of the album. Oh, whither the great funk-metal revolution?

Anyway, ended up watching the music video for Therapy. Had the belated realization that Mike's vocals on the verse are heavily influenced by Joe Jackson's Got the Time. And as if that weren't enough, Robert Trujillo's bass solo feels like a tip of the hat to Bakithi Kumalo's solo in Paul Simon's Call Me Al.

one month passes...

I cannot stop this trip, I forgot to pack the brakes
Crashed straight into a concrete wall of my mistakes
Ended up in a cemetery of a thousand wasted days
But that's alright with me 'cause that's where most of my memory lays

Mike Muir has the weirdest voice, it's thin af and amelodic but they wouldn't sound right with anybody else. it sounded more at home on the s/t but his weird simple melodic whine really fits How Will I Laugh Tomorrow perfectly, and also, well, in my 20s, this was one of the few bands I felt I could identify with in terms of what I was feeling.

I emailed Mike once and he wrote back and he signed it

i saw suicidal tendencies live last month because my kid wanted to go. I've never really cared about ST but it was a lot of fun. Trujillo's kid is great. Truijillo was standing on the side of the stage taking iphone videos all night.

aww that's amazing.

I'm going on the 29th, it was a Christmas gift to me, where I'm also going to visit my aunt out of town. my cousin, who I haven't seen in 20+ years, is going to be at the show, and my aunt doesn't talk to him anymore.

oooh fun! I haven't seen them since 2017 though and they always put on a phenomenal show. the mosh pit is insane during "Institutionalized"

They were fucking incredible when I saw them in 1990, headlining over Exodus and Pantera, with Rocky George and Robert Trujillo both in the band.
