xgau's site only goes to 40 and it's not there ("love shack" was #8 single though). p&j rankings seems a bit less RONG though new york is still way way too high but you do get to trade out bdp for fnm, and lenny kravitz and the cult are nowhere to be seen.

i'm voting Disintegration of course. number two is much harder it could be Technique, The Stone Roses, Doolittle or one of the two fires Playing with Fire or On Fire.

The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses - I heard this one from some dude in the dorms with a funky haircut. I liked it and got it, but it never became an obsession or anything.

Pixies - Doolittle- I dug it quite a bit, thought it sounded like something I wish I did. Haven't listened to the Pixies in any regularity in years.

De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising, Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique - Those CDs/tapes were pretty ubiquitous that year in the dorms along with some G'n'R, The Cult, Jane's Addition & Danzig.

New Order - Technique- I never heard this till a few years later. I heard Joy Division first, but I don't think I got into New ORder until the early 90s.

The Cure - Disintegration- I got into them with the Standing on a Beach/Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me and probably got the tape of this one the day it came out. I swear it and Doolittle came out about the same week or I got them around the same time.

Madonna - Like a Prayer - Never bought any of her music, saw the movie back in the day, but her music was always around.

Lou Reed - New York- I had it on tape and later on CD. Dug it.

Soul II Soul - Club Classics Vol. One/Keep On Movin'- I loved the tune Back To Life. It was way out of my usual listening habits of the day but I actually went out and got the tape because of it.

Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine - I couldn't get into it. I dug Ministry, but didn't really like this CD. It was around, you find a girl with some black finger nails in 89/90 (before quite as common), she probably is listening to some NIN or at least of of that Wax Trax stuff.

Faith No More - The Real Thing - Saw them and Soundgarden open for Voivod right not long after it came out. The whole record isn't all that, but certain tunes are killer. Haven't heard it in years and need to see if I still got a tape of it.

Neil Young - Freedom- I dug this one, but I was already big into Neil Young.

The Neville Brothers - Yellow Moon- roomate had this one in college and while I never got a copy, I remember liking having it on in the background.

Aerosmith - Pump - this thing was all over the place when I was a kid. I kind of grew to hate the sound of that record, especially like tracks like Janie's Got a Gun. We dug Aerosmith when they were into drugs.

Jungle Brothers - Done by the Forces of Nature - never really heard it. Know the name.

Nirvana - Bleach - heard it at the time and dug Mudhoney way more.

Galaxie 500 - On Fire - I dubbed this onto one side of a C90 back in the day and kind of dug part of it, but to me as a 19 year old kid it was like rock for people that don't like to rock.

Bonnie Raitt - Nick of Time - Thing called love was played on the radio a ton.

Bob Dylan - Oh Mercy - I got it on cassette. Dug the tune Political World more for the groove. Haven't heard it probably since 1990.

Spacemen 3 - Playing with Fire- Never heard this till a few years later. It's pretty inspired weirdness for the day.

Nano Negra - Puta's Fever, The Blue Nile - Hats - kinda remember Blue Nile from 120 minutes, but never caught with me.

808 State - 90 - I don't think I heard it until the late 90s. It's a pretty good record for the time sound wise, they were still a step head of the game.

Tom Petty - Full Moon Fever- I had this one on CD, saw him live around that time with Lenny Kravitz as the opener. He was one of the few 'classic rocker' types that seemed to actually get more popular as grunge/altrock etc happened.

Fugazi - 13 Songs (Fugazi EP + Margin Walker EP)- I don't think I heard this until about 1990 when Repeater was out, but it was a CD I played a ton for years.

It was so hard for me to not vote for Bleach since I loved that album dearly and saw that tour twice. But Doolittle is something Nirvana only wished they could have written.

Nice to see appreciation for The Neville Brothers here; that's a good record. I didn't appreciate De La, Beasties and Jungle Bros. at the time as much as I do now. And while I was kinda over alt rock by 1989, I loved Doolittle then and now.

I gotta hand it to his PR people and his own persona; also, he seems to get a second Wilburys-inspired wind that carried him through Wildflowers.

And yeah, hard to figure how Cosmic Thing didn't make this list. I just may have voted for it.

Cosmic Thing is not that acclaimed of an album. it's ranked around 300 on Rate YOur Music.

Stone Roses, Beasties, New Order, and Mano Negra are all pretty excellent

not to say Cosmic Thing is a bad album but i can see it not making the Top 75 from 1989. though Acclaimed Music web site does mention it for that year, just doesn't rank it. was very surprised at the RYM ranking, however.

RYM is just a bunch of dudes that like white male rock music fyi

I mean, I am not surprised that Cosmic Thing is not as highly ranked as some Marillion album or some paisly underground thing.

i played the shit out of my cassette of '3 feet high...' at the time but 'technique' is all time top 10 material for me so voted that.

Wow what a year! Josh Clover was right. Gotta go with Paul's Boutique, but there are maybe ten others that could take the crown. Please, no Disintegration though!

That looks pretty much how I expected.

No way is Doolittle better than On Fire (neither of which is my #1). I am surprised to see so much love for Pixies, whom I once loved and now like, but I have to say have not aged very well. Surprisingly. No longer sounds as weird and left field as it did. Whereas Paul's Boutique is still incredibly fresh.

Mad love for whoever voted for Jungle Brothers by the way.

never really thought of the pixies as sounding weird. Always regarded and loved them for being poppy and catchy as fuck.
