susan christie or jane weaver?
why is jane weaver not more well known? i feel silly for not having heard her until now.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Tuesday, 21 August 2012 22:55 (eleven years ago) link

Susan Christie, Jane W is not on "Finders Keepers"..

Mark G, Wednesday, 22 August 2012 14:06 (eleven years ago) link

maybe just in the usa? she's on that b-music imprint, at least from what i can see.
she also did this bearded ladies comp http://www.finderskeepersrecords.com/discog_04eggs.html

Effervescent songbird Jane Weaver has joined forces with Finders Keepers to produce a B-Music certified canon of femme-folk, laden with finger picked meandering melodies, ethereal harmonies and wistful psychedelic leanings.

i considered buying that once, but didn't because it was kinda $$
that was a mistake!

who is jim?

Electric sound of jim, see post 2.

Mark G, Wednesday, 22 August 2012 14:58 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, I was meaning the specific FK imprint, which is purely re-issues / repackages / various artists of old.

New stuff is b-music, bird records, Twisted Nerve, and so on..

New album 'The Silver Globe' sounds mighty fine to my ears.

Never heard of her before

Tuneful as fook 'folk music' with electronic layering. Just saying, like.

she has a quite rewarding back catalogue

mit iodine (electricsound), Friday, 31 October 2014 23:43 (nine years ago) link

Yep, had it on full blast for a car journey, tis great.

Someone was saying "Hawkwind influence" I don't see it but.

Mark G, Saturday, 1 November 2014 09:33 (nine years ago) link

really looking forward to getting this .. the reviews make this sound like audio catnip to me ..

mark e, Saturday, 1 November 2014 11:00 (nine years ago) link

happened to be listening to this just now - it's really good!

legit new threat wrt to a norman invasion (seandalai), Sunday, 2 November 2014 01:07 (nine years ago) link

This is like my third or fourth favourite LP of the year. Love it.

Doran, Sunday, 2 November 2014 23:35 (nine years ago) link

Count me in as a new convert, especially if Jim and Doran are repping for her. It's right up my alley with my recent love of all things krauty. The initial Stereolab vibe gives way to something deeper, will dig into more from her.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 6 November 2014 03:57 (nine years ago) link

probably the closest thing to this in her back cat is the misty dixon lp which i highly recommend and is dead easy to find cheap (or at least was)

mit iodine (electricsound), Thursday, 6 November 2014 04:05 (nine years ago) link

Silver Globe is definitely one of my favorites this year.

Listening to "The Amber Light" bonus disc, a great addition to the amazing "Silver Globe".

She recently did a nifty collaboration with Beyond The Wizxards Sleeve:

Does anyone have those d/l mp3 tracks from it?

New album, "Modern Kosmology", out on 5/19, has already leaked. And another tasty helping of krautrock/Stereolab fun it is!

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Monday, 17 April 2017 22:38 (seven years ago) link

jane weaver is fuckin amazing

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 17 April 2017 23:44 (seven years ago) link

Wow, really love the single..first time hearing Weaver, really been missing out

Carlotta's Portrait (Ross), Tuesday, 18 April 2017 00:43 (seven years ago) link

First impression is this is very good, but The Silver Globe is more interesting and ambitious

afriendlypioneer, Wednesday, 19 April 2017 18:15 (seven years ago) link

That's a fair assessment but I love the musical path she's ploughing. So what if it's similar to classic Stereolab, they're gone and I could go for more of that flavor.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Wednesday, 19 April 2017 18:30 (seven years ago) link

so much so, that i have ordered the edition with the extra disc.

to follow up on my on post.
i listen to the additional disc more often than the original album.
it's fantastic.
easy sonic references : neu!/psych/balearic

She doesn't shake the Stereolab comparisons but still this new album is her most consistently great album.

I'll take more of this ' neu!/psych/balearic' :)

Oh, it's so an album for those of youse that are missing Stereolab, but won't settle for substandard Stereolab soundalikeys.

It's better than that.

Mark G, Wednesday, 14 June 2017 10:29 (six years ago) link

after listening to the first two tracks I'm fully on board, some real motorik yumminess there. And I don't even care that much for Stereolab.

Bought this at the weekend. It's really good! I feel like mainstream press are not talking about this in ways that are helpful to people who might want to listen to it, though.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 31 July 2017 11:05 (six years ago) link

Even wikipedia lists her genres as 'acoustic, folk, alternative'. Which I guess may have been true in the past but seems pretty damn reductive next to this record.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 31 July 2017 11:07 (six years ago) link

It's great to hear really tight, melodic songs with this aesthetic.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 2 August 2017 13:58 (six years ago) link

this is really great. Fills the crater-sized hole left by Broadcast and Stereolab's absence but much more straight ahead and accessible.

one of my favs this year easily. like a rockier/kraut Linda Perhacs at times, but my favourite moments are easily the sublime pop of "Slow Motion" and "I Wish".

I got into it right around Christmas time. Really perfect for those chilly winter vibes. I had never even heard of her before. One of my favorite things I listened to last year.

Apparently Jane Weaver has a new project called Fenella that just came out today. Haven’t listened yet

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Saturday, 2 November 2019 01:33 (four years ago) link

It's really great, a wonderful stew of various krautrock threads and her own spin on it all. Plus her gorgeous vocals on half of it. It's on her Bandcamp site.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Saturday, 2 November 2019 18:06 (four years ago) link

Yep, got the vinyl through the post the other day. It's one of those 'reimagined score to an old film' things. Probably my favourite thing of hers since 1992(!) Fenella are doing a very limited number of gigs too performing parts of the record; saw them in Edinburgh a few weeks back.

Jeff W, Saturday, 2 November 2019 18:33 (four years ago) link

I agree it's wonderful. Listening right now and I am pleased there are quite a bit of Jane's vocals. I was expecting a mostly instrumental album. The atmosphere is wonderful.

Did Julian House do the sleeve? It's got that look.

On the one hand that sounds great, on the other, I'm going to wait on another song at least.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 13 October 2020 17:41 (three years ago) link

My initial reaction is that the "funky" verses reminded me of late 90s Phish. I'm not totally convinced but I'm still re-listening to it and hope for another song soon to help clarify the direction.

New single - Heartlow. More of a Lush vibe. Not psychedelic in the vein of Silver Globe or Modern Kosmology, but a little more in tune with her previous work than Revolution of Super Visions was. That song has grown on me a bit since October too.

I didn't like this at first, but now I do.

beard papa, Friday, 19 March 2021 22:38 (three years ago) link

Every review I've read has really annoyed me. I should just not read those.

beard papa, Friday, 19 March 2021 22:38 (three years ago) link

I had the same response. Was sort of put off by it for no good reason at first. Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for it. But I listened to it a couple of times today and it's growing on me.

Still not sure if it will really stick, but I can't figure out what it was I didn't like the first time.
