My sis is likely moving to l.a. to take a job working downtown. She is considering living (for ease of commute) in silver lake, Los Feliz, or downtown. Any suggestions for her? Part of her wants to live in a little house in silver lake, but another part of her wants to live in a loft downtown (so she can be close to work).

She's moving from San Francisco, where she has a beautiful old Victorian apartment with lots of character and built-ins. Is there anywhere in l.a. where she could find an apartment like that?

she's not going to find victorians in l.a., but she should look at silver lake or los feliz for craftsman-style bungalows.

downtown is great, but it's close to skid row and has a very large homeless presence -- a lot of drugs and mental illness. not the safest place for a woman to be alone after dark.

echo park has some nice bungalows too

+ is close to downtown

Angelino Heights is right next to downtown and has Victorians but it's very small and more houses than rentals but I feel I have seen a few apartment listings. You would need a car imo because it is sort of isolated.

If it was up to me, I think I would live in an old 1920s era Spanish/Moorish-style apartment court in Hollywood. You know, like, the Garden of Allah.

How about Mt. Washington/Lincoln Heights/South Pasadena area? Basically anything along the Gold LIne that makes her commute easier.

Of course the big question here is how much is she willing to spend on rent.

I wouldn't say echo park is less safe than downtown sorta varies block to block in both areas though the skid row area is truly scary

She makes a lot more money than I do and is willing to pay around ~2000 on rent. She loves that Angelino heights apt (as do i) but her problem with that nabe is that she says there are no stores around.

silverlake los feliz and downtown aren't far enough from one another where it'll make a difference living in one over the other for the first year, so she should just take whatever place she likes the most, and considering what she's willing to pay on rent she'll have a lot of choices. I mean downtown imo has completely changed, even within the last 6 months, so like, just dont bring a tent and put it up in skid row and you'll be fine

There are some adorable bungalows in Pasadena...but she thinks its a bit far.

She should live in an adorable bungalow in HIGHLAND PARK near the Gold Line and work downtown...just like I do (for now). Better hurry though, they're going fast.

I would say Mount Washington if it weren't for the stores thing.

Honestly though, she doesn't need to live NEAR stores.

I moved here from the Bay Area too and such people tend to covet Echo Park, or Silver Lake if they are paying less attention.

a friend of mine from London is a noted crime fiction writer with a multi-book deal, venerable old publisher, and all that

his agent wants him to come to Los Angeles and research a potential crime book set here. What milieu could he possibly consider that has not been covered by the generations of hallowed crime writers who have already produced pages of genre fiction re: the seedy underbelly of our city?

You can do your funny answers but also if you have any serious ideas, I'm all ears! I may hope to pass them on to him. I hope he does come, he is a good friend of mine.

I personally think he might set it in the contemporary LA art world, but that's only because there are some genuine folks who exist in that world I would happily see murdered. =D

So what are the good bars in l.a.? Here's some of the ones I've been to: cat and the fiddle, el Carmen, musso and franks, Polo lounge, chateau marmont, hms bounty. What are the classic, old-school places? How is Tam o'shanters?

I live in one of these but people are crazy

I am two blocks walk from Highland Park's finest coffee shop. There are a shitload of dogs in this neighborhood. And bars.

I don't know Tam O' Shanters. I'm sure I've said this before but I like Musso, Bounty, Taix, Colombo's for old school. I also like drinking at the Prince in K-town, maybe the weirdest bar in LA. It was an "English country" bar (lol) that is now Korean owned and has a piano player and bartenders who always seem to be on their first night on the job (but in a cute way). It is a bizarre fusion of neon-Korean and British hunting motifs.

Anyway I held off on going because I can't really afford records right now but I went for an impromptu Calvin Johnson in-store and I was really quite impressed. Definitely the most interesting, clued-up and lovingly curated of all the new vinyl-centric stores that are opening up. Check it out, I'm not on commission, I swear!
