is the "find your piece of mind / with some indie record that's cooler than mine" line playful or aggrieved? i guess in the context of the overall cheekiness of the record it's suitable?

― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 06:25 (eleven years ago) link
The song's personality is 100% Taylor Swift, but structure-wise it's like a mashup of Avril Lavigne and Carly Rae Jepsen which might seem a little like an unnecessarily panicky plea for radio appeal in 2012—not that she's ever had trouble with radio. So idgi but I <3 it all the same.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 06:30 (eleven years ago) link

yeah the first comparisons that came to mind for me were carly rae jepsen and that hot chelle rae song from last year -- but then again the first thing i thought of when i heard crj was taylor swift. not rly sure why i thought of hot chelle rae tho cuz it doesn't really seem similar at all (+ the comparison seems insulting)... maybe rhythmically similar in parts?

Nashville, TN – August 13, 2012 – Taylor Swift’s highly-anticipated fourth studio album will be released worldwide on October 22nd, Taylor herself announced this evening during a live YouTube web chat with her fans.
Entitled Red, the album will be released on Big Machine Records and contains 16 tracks. After writing her last album (Speak Now) entirely by herself, for this record Taylor collaborated with several artists, producers, and songwriters she had always wanted to work with. “For the last two years, I've been working on an album called Red,” Taylor says. “I called it Red because of the tumultuous, crazy adventures in love and loss that it chronicles. In my mind, when you experience love that's fast paced and out of control and mixes infatuation, jealousy, frustration, miscommunication, and all of those lovely emotions…in retrospect, it all looks red.” The first single from Red, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” (written by Taylor Swift, Max Martin, Shellback) has already arrived at radio and will be available today at iTunes and Google Play, and beginning tomorrow worldwide at all digital retail outlets.

Man, I hope she didn't completely ditch Nathan Chapman (or her particular brand of country pop) for the album. I can totally see how this could fit into one of her a;bums, but it's not really the type of thing I can listen to a whole album of.
― spanky hotel frogstrot (how's life), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 08:16 (eleven years ago) link
yeah I'm surprised how pop she's gone with this, and I miss the songwriting tightness & lyrical specifities et. al. that are her trademark (though that indie record line totally compensates - just imagining her face when she's singing that is making me irl lol) when it doesn't seem like she needs to go to max martin for a hit. BUT speak now didn't really produce any massive hits in the vein of fearless and the general response to "mine" as a lead single was that it was underwhelming (even though I thought it was still a+ great) and I figure that she wants the huge commerical success on the pop format now when she's at her prime in the knowledge that she's guaranteed decades of success in country when she wants a bit later on anyway, so she might as well let her hair down a bit right now, and maybe even get some big worldwide success a la shania. also I imagine this is something of a red (yeah yeah) herring and the album will have a lot more darker mood pieces like "safe & sound" - and just a whole load of experimentation by the sound of it - and this is just a case of pulling in the listeners to go and buy the lp.
also I really like how this added to ther huge successes of "call me maybe" and "boyfriend" is i think forming a new pop consensus, which is starting to move the top 40 format away from the gross pounding guetta/calvin harris beats shit and getting back to an earlier age of teen pop. or maybe that's just my wishful thinking.
― prolego, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 08:40 (eleven years ago) link
can see this probably alienating some country radio unless there's a banjo mix. but then country radio is all about the cash so i'm probably wrong. i mean they played that terrible sugarland steampunk thing to death.
anyway, don't know if i like this too much. not much of the old taylor in it :-(
― Jamie_ATP, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 08:42 (eleven years ago) link
I'm not enthusiastic in general about her album being filled with collabs - I trust her, but not her friends, and I don't really want a 'different sound'.
But this song is great and sounds like a huge hit immediately, unlike Mine, which was great but didn't sound like a hit at all, and so it's definitely job well done in starting off the campaign differently from Speak Now. Hopefully the album is a Taylor-ish whole and not bits and pieces of other attempts at hits, though.
― abcfsk, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 09:07 (eleven years ago) link
i think i saw buzzings on a blog somewhere that there may be a mix for country radio
the album will have a lot more darker mood pieces like "safe & sound"

I remember when Speak Now came out, there was a little processed drum loop on one of the songs and I was like "god, don't do this Taylor" and now this song basically sounds like P¡nk or something. But it`s not a particularly novel take on the P¡nk thing.
― spanky hotel frogstrot (how's life), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 09:56 (eleven years ago) link
Like, and it's not to say that Taylor couldn't do that sort of pop well, as a departure from the country/pop/rock thing that's worked really well for her, but god those drums stomp all over everything in the song.
― spanky hotel frogstrot (how's life), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 09:59 (eleven years ago) link
i think something like Sparks Fly is as far down the pop taylor rabbithole i was prepared to go. if the new LP is all shit like Avril's 'Girlfriend' i may have to take my leave.
― Jamie_ATP, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 10:04 (eleven years ago) link
I think pseudo-Avril is a pretty good sound for Taylor! This is much better than I was expecting from reading the above.
Except for the talky aside, Lex is right about that
― Tim F, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 10:09 (eleven years ago) link
Taylor's better than this and Avril's better than this.
― spanky hotel frogstrot (how's life), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 10:13 (eleven years ago) link
yeah but I can't get past the fact that Avril is releasing that sort of thing when she's 28. If Taylor is still doing non stop indecisive boyfriend focused stuff in three-five years it would be a big disappointment. she's a good enough writer to be able to go somewhere else with it.
― Jamie_ATP, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 10:13 (eleven years ago) link
I'd rather Taylor did pseudo-Ashlee rather than pseudo-Avril.

From a distance this post makes perfect sense but on reflection I think it totally depends which Ashlee album you're referring to here.
At any rate I think this could easily seem as much like an Ashlee song as an Avril song, it's just that Taylor's voice ends up sounding more like Avril b/c she's girly rather than throaty.

The ones on Better Than Revenge were completely cringe-inducing, but less-so for this song. The cut-up snippets of conversation reminds me of
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zk7MTuovhhE
like she's trying to do something experimental with found sound and it could probably be awesome in some other producer's hands.

So what? I didn't get it with the "CR Jepsen is 26, too old for this shii" argument and I don't get it with Avril either. Most women I know are chin-stroking think pieces in their early 20s, and raving horn-dogs in their 30s. I mean, this whole "she's too old for this" is male gaze talking, if I may say so in the gentlest of terms

Taylor Swift, gardener and cat enthusiast, killed you Sunday when she visited a 7-year-old cancer patient and offered to sing him any song he wanted, or just do some of her favorite things, like playing with Play-Doh or talking about Spider-Man or whatever. Authorities say the cause of your death was drowning in a flood of your own tears. . . . Medical examiners placed your time of death at around 5:05 in this video, when Taylor reached the chorus of "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," and Jordan started singing along at the top of his little lungs.
