"Happy Together" probably. Incredible year, but I don't think the #1s reflect that all that well (or maybe I've just heard them too many times).

Oh yeah, by any calculation, 1967 was a top year for music. I just meant that the #1's were quite solid as well.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 12 August 2012 01:49 (eleven years ago) link

"The Happening" is the only one that is a miss for me. But even Frank & Nancy are okay.
And the rest are classics or pretty great.
So, voting for "Respect" for no particular reason over the 2 Monkees songs.

'ode to billie joe' very very easily, 'penny lane' and 'the letter' at 2-3

Everyone knows it's Windy

buzza, Sunday, 12 August 2012 03:57 (eleven years ago) link

I think I've got it narrowed down to these:

The Monkees - I'm A Believer
The Buckinghams - Kind Of A Drag
The Rolling Stones - Ruby Tuesday
The Supremes - Love Is Here And Now You're Gone
The Beatles - Penny Lane
The Turtles - Happy Together
Nancy Sinatra & Frank Sinatra - Somethin' Stupid
The Superemes - The Happening
The Young Rascals - Groovin'
Aretha Franklin - Respect
The Association - Windy
The Beatles - All You Need Is Love
The Doors - Light My Fire
Bobbie Gentry - Ode To Billie Joe
Lulu - To Sir With Love
The Box Tops - The Letter
Strawberry Alarm Clock - Incense And Peppermints
The Monkees - Daydream Believer
The Beatles - Hello, Goodbye

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 12 August 2012 04:55 (eleven years ago) link

...but seriously, this is a tough one. ughhhh. Penny Lane vs. Daydream Believer for me.

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 12 August 2012 04:56 (eleven years ago) link

Which one? There are two.

"I'm a Believer"

I don't think "Light My Fire" will get a lot of love here but it's one of the more interesting pop singles of the era

yeah i couldn't vote for it but in this context it's something else - i like that 'ode to billie joe' almost plays as an aftermath to 'to sir w/ love' meets 'light my fire' - innocence yielding to death, you can almost imagine 'light my fire' being what bille joe listens to before he jumps off the tallahatchie bridge. all you need is love my ass.

I thought this was gonna be really tough but once I saw The Box Tops - The Letter I knew there could be no other choice

They're all so great (except for Billie Joe which annoys the hell out of me). My shortlist is I'm A Believer, Happy Together, Groovin, To Sir w/ Love, The Letter, and Hello, Goodbye. But after listening to them all again, and to my own surprise I have to vote for Love Is Here and Now You're Gone.

Insanely tough call. I'm A Believer by the tiniest sliver.

This was tough. Went for "Groovin'", but I still think Fugazi should have covered "Windy".

The answer is right there in front of you all. "All You Need Is Love."

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 08:19 (eleven years ago) link

obv aretha is all-time but i'm voting "groovin'" by the young rascals cause blue-eyed soul doesn't get enough love, see also "the letter"
