Btw, my cat generally ignores the tv but was obsessed with Super Metroid. All getting in the way and trying to chase morph-ball Samus around.

I'm playing through Super Metroid right now. I played it when it came out but I had rented it and gotten stuck, and it's no fun getting stuck in these games. Now that I can look up the answer online, getting stuck for hours on end is avoidable. I actually prefer the linear-style Castlevania stuff over Metroidvania for that reason, though the unlockable open-world aspects are really cool and a great part of what makes it fun. That part where the green animals wall jump and you realize you could have wall jumped the entire time is awesome! (Tho in reality you couldn't wall jump in many places because the walls need to be pretty close together).

You can't top the minimalist title theme from the first NES game, though.

i'd never thought about how epistemologically interesting the wall jumping was before

God I used to love Super Metroid. It really was a world of its own.

My favourite of the Prime series was Metroid Prime Pinball

The controls in Super Metroid are absolutely perfect, fine-tuned like a master mechanic fine-tuned a hot-rod. Wall jumping is difficult but not impossible, and when you pull one off, you feel like a million bucks. You really feel like you jumped up that long vertical tunnel because you DID, and it was a tricky little feat of acrobatic button inputs. If Star Wars is Space Opera then Super Metroid is Space Ballet.

Super Metroid + Space Ritual is the ideal way to change things up

It is way better than Dark Side of the Oz, too.

I love the fire area graphics the most, it's basically built out of NES Metroid tiles but w the SNES they can do color palette shifting, so it has a nice glowing effect that makes it look like everything is carved from burning coals.

There's like a whole aesthetic that could be wrought from the start of Super Metroid when Samus lands on Zebes and it's all bleak and foggy and ominous. I'd love to start a thread about music/films/art that inadvertently allude to this but I'm worried it might be a little too esoteric.

Just started playing Super Metroid on a SNES emulator and I'm having a blast. The atmosphere alone is GOAT.
Gonna take adam's advice on SM + Hawkwind. Also weed.

i loved the first NES Metroid so much as a kid. can't beat that atmosphere. Metroid Prime i always avoided until last year cos 3D but it turned out to be surprisingly really good and faithful to the series. haven't played Zero or the other GBA games.
definitely check out Another Metroid 2 Remake (AM2R). it is a fan game but it is the best fangame i have ever played. it is a remake of the Gameboy Metroid 2 (which always suffered from the tiny screen) but with Super Metroid graphics/gameplay.
