gr8080 -
I've never gotten around to True Grit, but Dog of the South isn't bad.
If you're ever stuck at the library and wondering what to look for because you've already read everything, Portis ain't a bad place to start.

I haven't read as much of his stuff as I should. Right now, I'm occupied with How the States Got Their Shapes, a book that I had the idea to write ten years ago (but was too lazy.)

Haven't made it to Maryland yet (I'm in the I's), but the answer to most of these questions is "slavery" and "we hate Mexicans".
