I love the glorious ILX tradition of slagging off the places we get mentioned, cf. the Guardian every time, they love it really the slags.

"does what it says on the cover"? It's a bit lame, I suppose.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 6 October 2005 10:19 (eighteen years ago) link

Good things about ILC (for real):

- it doesn't take comics that seriously but it does like them.
- no icons and sigfiles!
- we like Grant Morrison but we don't actually want to be him
- ditto Ellis, Bendis, Millar
- your gateway to a world of ILX pain
- the occasional bit of great insight
- we honestly WOULD like some threads that aren't about Marvel, DC, 2000AD etc. Honest!

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 6 October 2005 10:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Yes, look at all the time we spend "loving" comics.

Until I Finish My Poll

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:30 (eighteen years ago) link

OK, how about:

I Love Comics is a sub-board on the ilXor network. When not LAFFING at the return to 60s psych plotting in mainstream comics today (TINY FOOTPRINTS IN BRANES notwithstanding), we LAFF at scenes rendered humorous by modern language, draw our own material based on throw-away comments, and laugh at Rob Liefeld's inability to draw well.

Usually the Brits try and push 2000AD on the Americans, the Americans try and push X-history on the Brits and the Europeans try and push Corto Maltese on everybody.

Our polls would give you a better idea of our likes and dislikes, if we ever finished one, but Grant Morrison is our favourite. We just have no desire to join him, wanking onto a sigil on some mountaintop in Tibet.

I would throw in a mention that Rich Johnston's only posted once, which is probably some record or something, but that's because I'm cheeky.

Please Let Me Drown Before I Love Comics Gets Me

We're about the other end of the spectrum from the Engine, which I quickly realised was a good place to go if I needed A NAGGING (which is sometimes the case) but not actually that much fun. Nobody's just a wannabe on ILC, we're all already famous for being famous!

are you reading?

I am now. Thanks for the response-- the efforts so far have been highly amusing, if not altogether successful. I don't think that "We're about the other end of the spectrum from the Engine" is apt enough of a description on its own as it might give the impression that we're more "mainstream" than we really are, while "We think Tintin is better than Watchmen" is probably just as applicable to the snootier and more envious denizens of the Comics Journal's board. I'm tempted to go with "Comics Are Rubbish But We Love Them Anyway" just because it amuses me, but maybe we'd be better served by a straighter/copy-ready one or two sentence boil down of the points on Tom and aldo's summaries, leaving out in-jokes and warning about ILX addiction? If no one else steps up to the task, I'll try to pound something out for vetting here tomorrow.

what the fuck is steven grant 'famous' for writing apart from the Punisher?

Who said he was famous, and why should it matter? He's a working professional-- it's not like they were going to get Alan Moore to write for them every week. (Ellis actually used to be the other columnist at CBR, before he went off to concentrate on his own interweb stuff.) I actually like Grant much better as a columnist than as a comic book writer (Badlands, his other big claim to fame, wasn't really my cup of tea) and I don't think that I'm the only one out there who feels that way.

Chris F. (servoret), Thursday, 6 October 2005 23:03 (eighteen years ago) link

I think Grant is a terrific columnist, and quite instructive on the nuts and bolts of making comics much like someone who finds maths hard is a better maths teacher. That said, I mainly read it for the political stuff which is even better.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 7 October 2005 08:19 (eighteen years ago) link

I kind of started this to be a 'great jumping-on point for new readers' so to speak. Assuming it gets populated!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 10 October 2005 22:41 (eighteen years ago) link

I e-mailed Grant yesterday, but I'm not sure if any of the blurb will actually be included in the column-- I might have misremembered what he did for past mentions. It'll be interesting to see if anyone shows up.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 27 October 2005 13:24 (eighteen years ago) link

Chris I remember when ILX was going to be featured in the Guardian (national UK newspaper) for the first time and there was enormous paranoia and feelings we shd be on our best/worst behaviour (views varied) and great anticipation and then we got absolutely nobody new from it.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 27 October 2005 16:32 (eighteen years ago) link

What did the Guardian have to say?

chap who would dare to spy on his best mate's ex (chap), Thursday, 27 October 2005 16:36 (eighteen years ago) link

"Biff! Bang! Pow! Internet Message Boards aren't just for kids"

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Thursday, 27 October 2005 17:41 (eighteen years ago) link

Bless you, Jeff. That actually occurred to me when I was reading you on the other threads just now-- glad to have you here!

Awesome story, Tom. I wonder how many people even did a look-thru, though! I was a bit miffed when last week in his column Grant started bitching about how there's no substantial critical content about comics on message boards. "Tell them Chris and I sent you", indeed-- did he just look at the New Answers page and then split? Ergh!

I blame amphetamines.

In my case, I blame not wanting to write my paper about Kant...

Chris F. (servoret), Friday, 28 October 2005 00:59 (eighteen years ago) link

I first came to ILX after reading that piece in the Guardian, actually. It was all about ILM though, ILC didn't even exist yet back in those days of innocence...

Though, by now its easily my favourite comics board.

David N (David N.), Friday, 28 October 2005 01:16 (eighteen years ago) link

Haha on the day the article appeared, Mark C (not the current MarkC, the golden age one) started a thread on "The Guardian, Classic or Dud?"

Is it just me, or does Steven Grant's challenge this week have more than a hint of WHAT ILC HAS BEEN TALKING ABOUT THIS WEEK about the answer?

Steven, show yourself!
