The atypical Electronic Meditation gets my vote. Real-life drums make that and Alpha Centauri my favourites of the 7 or 8 TDs I've owned over the years. A reference point demonstrating the difference between orbiting the earth and merely floating motionless.

(I too wish the Sorcerer soundtrack was here.)

last hour or so of voting. Just incase anyones missed it.

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 21:39 (sixteen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 23:01 (sixteen years ago) link

A runaway win for Phaedra then. I thought ILM would've seen a win for one of the 1st 4.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 10:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Tom D: no, I did own Stuntman and Pinnacles, though. I recall the latter being quite pretty - I may still have the odd track on tape somewhere.

"Epsilon" is great - it was recorded halfway between "Phaedra" and "Rubycon", so how could it not be? First half of title track is a floaty mellotron piece that is really beautiful.

Tom D., Wednesday, 6 June 2007 10:39 (sixteen years ago) link

It's great.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 12:50 (sixteen years ago) link

i really should get some more of their stuff. i had a bad experience with one of their eighties albums when i was 16 and it's made me very wary.

anyone heard the new one? (judging by the responses i got, it seems not.)

grimly fiendish, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 12:55 (sixteen years ago) link

oh rats' fucking cocks.

that link, working this time

grimly fiendish, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 12:55 (sixteen years ago) link

Found the "Epsilon" LP v. cheap a few years ago - great. Great cover, too. Haven't heard much TD apart from Phaedra though.

willem, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 12:56 (sixteen years ago) link

xpost: or not.

third time lucky

grimly fiendish, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 12:58 (sixteen years ago) link

hurrah. goddamn nu-ILX :)

grimly fiendish, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 12:58 (sixteen years ago) link

six months pass...

I hope Grimly bought himself some TD with his xmas money!

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 31 December 2007 19:00 (sixteen years ago) link

this is exactly the thread I want to see right now. Phaedra is incredible so I need to know what to investigate next. The answer is Zeit, it seems.

bakerstreetsaxsolo, Monday, 31 December 2007 19:02 (sixteen years ago) link

I really like Encore actually.

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 31 December 2007 19:47 (sixteen years ago) link

But, yeah, Phaedra ftw. Followed by Force Majeure.

Ned Trifle II, Monday, 31 December 2007 19:48 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah! and if you like Force Majeure you gotta get Stratosfear too

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 31 December 2007 23:08 (sixteen years ago) link

You can't really go wrong with any of the albums on the poll though.

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 1 January 2008 14:31 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm not going to bother with TD 80s poll as I don't know anything about them. Feel free to start one someone or recommend one to check. I don't like new age stuff though.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 02:12 (sixteen years ago) link

Not that I'd have voted for it, but where's Green Desert?

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 05:28 (sixteen years ago) link

nine months pass...

Did anyone ever do an 80s poll?

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 3 October 2008 09:00 (fifteen years ago) link

rubycon definitely wasn't as impressive as phaedra
zeit, you have to be in the mood

those are the only 3 I have purchased

CaptainLorax, Friday, 3 October 2008 15:54 (fifteen years ago) link

encore deserved a vote but I'm glad I voted Force Majeure, don't think I'll ever tire of that album. Lindstrom/Alex Moulton/Zombi fans need to check it out.

i am going to honour this poll right now by, err, downloading the winner. (hope it's a bit like the Risky Business OST)

Ludo, Saturday, 14 March 2009 20:45 (fifteen years ago) link

And I decided on my 1st poll of 2009
Best Track on Tangerine Dream - Force Majeure?

Pfunkboy in blood drenched rabbit suit jamming in the woods (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 14 March 2009 20:47 (fifteen years ago) link

Is this any good?

Green Desert (rec. in 1973)

Castle EMS 349 - This recording was supposed to be released instead of Phaedra in 73. It then disappeared into TD's safe until it was discovered again and released in 1986.

Track Listing:

01. Green Desert
02. White Clouds
03. Astral Voyager
04. Indian Summer

ilxor should check this poll

Pfunkboy in blood drenched rabbit suit jamming in the woods (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 14 March 2009 22:34 (fifteen years ago) link

Herman--yes. As I mentioned above, Green Desert is entirely worthy.

I seem to be missing only the box set and Force Majeure. I plan to correct that soon!

Nate Carson, Saturday, 14 March 2009 23:20 (fifteen years ago) link

ok i'll check it out. It's not on Spotify though so im checking out Cyclone instead.

Im not sure about those vocals on Cyclone.

ilxor should check this poll

Thanks, I saw it!

These are the ones I have so far:

1974 Phaedra 11
1972 Zeit 6
1979 Force Majeure 5
1976 Stratosfear 5
1975 Rubycon 3

I've heard Electronic Meditation is good and saw that one at the local shop, so probably getting that one next.

ilxor, Monday, 16 March 2009 00:59 (fifteen years ago) link

That one may be too rockist for you (sounds like early Pink Floyd)

Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 16 March 2009 03:56 (fifteen years ago) link

it's great. Very different to anything else they ever done. Also check out Atem.

Which I am going to listen to right now. Been ages since I listened to the spacey stuff.

I cant find Green Desert online anywhere on any blogs.

Herman, hit me up off line for a YSE.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 00:06 (fifteen years ago) link

Awesome,I'll send you a webmail with my email, thanks!

Or I would if the webmail thing worked... gmail me at pfunkboy@

I just picked up a $3 copy of Phaedra today cuz of this thread, the only other one I have is Electronic Meditation so it's nice to know where to start.

sleeve, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 00:22 (fifteen years ago) link

It's totally different to that album. Like the 1st 2 Kraftwerk albums and their later material, the difference is astounding. Still really like EM and the 1st 2 Kraftwerk though.

Yeah I wouldn't say EM is much of a primer for anything they did afterwards. Same with the first Van Der Graaf Generator or the first couple Pink Floyds. Just a whole different beast really.

Nate Carson, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 00:54 (fifteen years ago) link

But still enjoyable! I listen to the 1st VDGG album a lot and the 1st Pink Floyd is by far my favourite.

I'd hardly place the 1st Pink Floyd album in the same category as the first VDGG album! Or the 1st TD album, for that matter!

Sacco, Vanzetti, Passantino... (Tom D.), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 10:42 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't think that's what Nate meant, he just means that it's totally different to what came later, like with these other bands.

two years pass...

fopp are currently doing most of the tg virgin albs for 3 quid a pop. i bought rubycon (a winner) and ricochet (v gd 2nd side, not so wowed by the gtr and vox on the first track.) looking at this poll, will prob go back for stratosfear and maybe force majeure - i did have a copy of encore on cd and wasn't that thrilled by it, so had p much written off everything post-phaedra, may have to revise that opinion in the light of rubycon.

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 14 April 2011 19:51 (thirteen years ago) link

Rubycon is probably my just-about favourite

A Zed and Two Nults (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 14 April 2011 20:06 (thirteen years ago) link

the virgin years 1974-1978 can be found for under $15 in several online stores.

jay lenonononono (abanana), Thursday, 14 April 2011 21:06 (thirteen years ago) link

force majeure is awesome but that and stratosfear do have spacerock guitar on it (which makes them awesome but you might not agree)

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 14 April 2011 21:25 (thirteen years ago) link

you're allowed to use every trick in the book, if you wrote the book.

I think vocals are only on one side of Cylone? But yeah, the non-vocal stuff on there rules

re:sequencer arpeggios n stuff....ehhh but I just don’t like the sound of it for the most part, sorry

brimstead, Friday, 24 April 2020 19:09 (four years ago) link

if there were secret Patrick Crowley remixes of 70s Virgin TD, I’d be all in

brimstead, Friday, 24 April 2020 19:15 (four years ago) link

re:sequencer arpeggios n stuff....ehhh but I just don’t like the sound of it for the most part, sorry

Is there another band called Tangerine Dream out there I've not heard yet?

The Corbynite Maneuver (Tom D.), Friday, 24 April 2020 19:47 (four years ago) link

is there much sequencer stuff on the first four albums? I mean, I used to dig all the Virgin stuff but people change. they did a lot of cool stuff besides arpeggios

brimstead, Saturday, 25 April 2020 01:25 (four years ago) link

I think "Phaedra" is the first one with sequencers but it is pretty much their signature sound, or definitely the most recognisable.

The Corbynite Maneuver (Tom D.), Saturday, 25 April 2020 01:28 (four years ago) link

I mean, "That sounds like Tangerine Dream", doesn't usually refer to guitar playing that reminds you of Edgar Froese, for instance.

The Corbynite Maneuver (Tom D.), Saturday, 25 April 2020 01:29 (four years ago) link

right because all tangerine dreams before force Majeure only had sequencers, no other instruments or synthesized sounds

brimstead, Saturday, 25 April 2020 03:51 (four years ago) link

anyway yeah I know I’m a clod, whatever

brimstead, Saturday, 25 April 2020 03:51 (four years ago) link

just a bit of fun, Tom d, I’m not mad or anything

Sorry to everyone else for shitting up to thread

brimstead, Saturday, 25 April 2020 03:52 (four years ago) link

lol any excuse to bullshit about TD
