Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 27 March 2006 16:19 (eighteen years ago) link

I think I may be glad I couldn't afford to buy this then.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 27 March 2006 16:54 (eighteen years ago) link

i'd like to hear it anyway. please ysi.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Monday, 27 March 2006 18:02 (eighteen years ago) link

I got a bit distracted this weekend after my post, but I'll YSI it here after work.

Giles Manius (jsoulja), Monday, 27 March 2006 18:12 (eighteen years ago) link

If anyone REALLY wants it, Aquarius Records has it (that's where I got it from). It's pretty dreadful though...

The Equator Lounge (Chris Barrus), Monday, 27 March 2006 18:41 (eighteen years ago) link

If Chris hates it then thats the clincher for me.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 27 March 2006 18:59 (eighteen years ago) link

i like the guitar loops disc quite a bit. i mean, obviously if you're expecting anything remotely related to spiritualized it'll be an extreme disappointment. i can't profess to be the biggest spiritualized fan, but this thing hold my attention more than the last couple of spiritualized records. and it's completely devoid of the whole i'm a saint/i'm a sinner dichotomy that due has run into the ground.

crum (clikatowi), Monday, 27 March 2006 19:04 (eighteen years ago) link

eh?

Christopher Costello (CGC), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 23:05 (eighteen years ago) link

Hey sorry for the delay- ended up on a date last night.

Can someone tell me how to YSI post on ILM? I don't know the html code for links....

Giles Manius (jsoulja), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 01:43 (eighteen years ago) link

I also have just about every Spacemen 3/Spiritualized/Spectrum release, so I'll consider requests for other YSI's.....

Giles Manius (jsoulja), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 01:45 (eighteen years ago) link

Hi Giles. Do you happen to have a decent recording of Ladies and Gentlemen from Coachella '99? The only one I've found sounds like it was recorded on a dictaphone from 500 meters. Thanks.

PS. To post a YSI link, you need to enter an email address of your own on the YSI form to receive the YSI link. Then cut and paste into a message here.

Hi

Will Carruthers here .
There is a little spiritualized news at the end of this message .

We have made a new lp . It's called "Home improvement for condemned buildings "
Mark Refoy and Kevin Cowen played guitar on it and Jonny Mattock played the drums.

It was recorded during the summer of 2005 in a soon to be demolished old office block in Leicester .
It's got ten songs on it and if you want to hear some of them please try out our new website
at www.willcarruthers.com .You will need flash installed to view it .
You will find some free mp3 downloads and some audio streams .
The album is available to buy through the website at this address .

http://freelove.moonfruit.com/goshopping

The first five hundred are numbered , signed and painted and decorated by my own fair hands.

We also have the psi love you album,(that I played bass on), and some rather nice handmade posters for sale .

If you go to this address

http://www.apolloaudio.com/26

You will find an online stream of four tracks from the album , plus a new version of van fever incident ...(now with added Mark Refoy)
This ep is available as a paid download for the price of four dollars .

thanks

ps ...also, possibly of interest to fans of Lazer guided melodies . Somebody kindly sent me fifty copies of a spiritualized bootleg , containing unreleased versions of songs ,, outtakes , rehearsals and a peel session from the Lazer guided melodies lineup.
There is some great stuff on here you won't have heard before .
If you would like more details please send an e-mail to frndly_fr@yahoo.co.uk.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Sunday, 2 April 2006 10:09 (eighteen years ago) link

Got a reply

This bootleg is called Friendly fire .
It features outtakes , rehearsals and the peel session from the Lazer guided melodies lineup.

The full tracklisting is :

OUTTAKES

I want you ////instrumental version , unreleased variant of glides and chimes .

shine a light ///very different from the album version ,diff vocals , diff ,mix ..unreleased

smile ///radically different , longer version ..unreleased

I want you ////twelve inch, unreleased instrumental version

REHEARSALS

these are from a good quality cassette recording of a Spiritualized rehearsal at Jason's flat in Rugby. They have been cleaned up and mastered and the sound is powerful if not totally hi-fi.

why don't you smile
you know it's true
amen
angel sigh
If I were with her now
run

PEEL SESSIONS:
Already released,but a nice little bonus .

Angel sigh
feel so sad
smile

there is a secret track at the end of smile ...which seems to be someone messing about with a sampler while somebody sings the bare necessities from the Jungle book in the background .
Not essential Spiritualized , but quite entertaining .

The cd's are professionally made, with nice artwork and quality printing .
We have very few of these .
We are putting together a list of people who want one. If you definitely want to buy this, reply to this e-mail address (frndly_fr@yahoo.co.uk.) stating how many you want .
When they are ready to be sent out ,(about three weeks)
you will be notified by e-mail and told how to pay for them .

They will be 12 pounds each including postage and packing.
You will need some sort of debit /credit card .
Included is an attachment showing some of the artwork .
thanks

I think payment is via paypal.
Ordered mine. No doubt they will go quick.

Someone tell Kate!!

Oh my, oh my. The power of ILx is astonishing and because of this board all copies (+) will probably be sold...email coming tomorrow.

BeeOK (boo radley), Monday, 3 April 2006 08:04 (eighteen years ago) link

And at least these guys have the whole drugs excuse, so I've never had the same crushed expectations with them that I've had every time I hear the name Kevin Shields....

-- Giles Manius

OTM

Amazing Grace was horrid! I love Let It Come down but apparently one of the few who do. It was over the top but think it's the best lyrics Jason ever wrote and love the fact that he blew so much money making that record...but it worked.

BeeOK (boo radley), Monday, 3 April 2006 08:25 (eighteen years ago) link

I liked amazing grace and I loved Let It Come Down.
But this guitar loops im not so sure about...

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 3 April 2006 14:16 (eighteen years ago) link

Let It Come Down is actually a great record, despite the dicey press coverage. Never understood exactly why it got slammed. I've always heard it had to do with the choir bombast and the commercial success of Ladies and Gentlemen..., but I'd guess it's an example of critic-actually-fan, and the biggest fans sometimes have the hardest time with evolving sounds.

Amazing Grace was definitely a step back, but there's a few great tracks on it all the same.

I'm having a real hard time uploading "Guitar Loops" as a YSI. I've had a firewall issue lately and I think this may have something to do with it.

It really is that bad, though, so you're not missing out on anything but disappointment....

Giles Manius (jsoulja), Monday, 3 April 2006 16:58 (eighteen years ago) link

I was totally stoked about getting any new music from the Spaceman, and when I got Guitarloops in the mail and listened to it I was pretty pissed. Not at the man, but I was dissapointed and found it unlistenable. Since then I've put it in a few times and it has grown on me a good bit.

I've tried emailing about that Spiritualized boot, has anybody else gotten a response? Not me, yet.... God I want this boot so bad.

Yeah , I did. The tracklisting and stuff was the reply I got.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 3 April 2006 23:35 (eighteen years ago) link

i'd still like to hear guitar loops. so if anyone else would like to ysi it, i would really appreciate it and junk like that.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 00:08 (eighteen years ago) link

Likewise, I would love to hear this as well. Email link if you don't want to post and thanks ahead of time.

BeeOK (boo radley), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 06:49 (eighteen years ago) link

Errrr... blimey! Thanks for alerting me to this, Pfunkboy!

I have written, but I fear I may be too late, alas. I'm going to go and see if I can get the new 'puter to play Will's MP3s now. :-)

STOP! Time Thief! (kate), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 10:05 (eighteen years ago) link

No problem. I'm sure you will get one no bother. Esp if Will hasn't posted elsewhere.

I immediately thought of you and Chris when this came up. But my email to him bounced back.

I can't wait to hear this.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 15:02 (eighteen years ago) link

email to me bounced back?

Christopher Costello (CGC), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 16:12 (eighteen years ago) link

No, to another Chris.

Anyway I just got an email from Will. He sent me the paypal address. £12 inc postage & packing.
Just paid.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 22:01 (seventeen years ago) link

is it like Dreamweapon? Or Glides and Chimes? Or Tones for DJs? Gimme a bone here...

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 22:04 (seventeen years ago) link

I really REALLY like the Peel Sessions tracks on this cd.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 22:05 (seventeen years ago) link

are those the same Peel Sessions as the Medication EP...? That stuff's amazing. I have some other BBC stuff but it isn't Peelie (recorded at Maide Vale, I think? with a very stupid and rude host. Also features the only live version I've ever heard of "Stay With Me")

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 22:09 (seventeen years ago) link

it's nothing like dreamweapon and i'm not sure what those others sound like. it's like...it's just jason fucking around with guitar loops.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 22:11 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm not sure. I have the medication ep, i'll need to dig it out to find out.
I really should buy those Early Works cds that came out.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 23:51 (seventeen years ago) link

It probably cost him £15.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 23:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Yep, it cost me more than $20, and they're going for about £30 on ebay at the moment.

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 20 April 2006 02:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Let It Come Down is still my favorite Spiritualized album, and I feel like this new album and the last one tap into the soulful, hungover widescreen orchestral vibe of that one better than anything he's done since

J. Sam, Friday, 22 April 2022 20:34 (one year ago) link

that seems promising, I like Let It Come Down, but it definitely isn't my favorite. I really disliked when he went for more of a raw rock sound, it just didn't work for me, so maybe this is a step in the right direction.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Friday, 22 April 2022 20:36 (one year ago) link

This one also has a bit of a lo-fi LAGWAFIS feel about it too. You should definitely check it out

groovypanda, Friday, 22 April 2022 21:15 (one year ago) link

J. Sam, Friday, 22 April 2022 21:40 (one year ago) link

Yep, excellent as usual. Mr. Spaceman is the most reliable purveyor of aural comfort food I know of

My thought listening to this album last night was, man this guy is consistent. I like the new one, he is good at doing what he does.

The first track is so choice, I keep playing it

Legalize Suburban Benches (Raymond Cummings), Saturday, 23 April 2022 22:40 (one year ago) link

Mark Refoy with a story he posted just now on FB:

Spiritualized fun fact
It’s time for a lazer guided fun fact folks. Back in 1991 Spiritualized were in the process of recording their debut album in various different studios. A studio we spent a lot of time in was Bath Moles. During the recording of 200 Bars it was decided that some accordion was needed. A call was made and an accordion player turned up to add the necessary vibe.
Or so we thought.
She was a very polite and well spoken lady, not the folkie type we’d been expecting. We played the song and when it came to the part when Kate intoned “One Hundred” Jason said…“we want you to play over the chords B and F# like this - da dada da da da da dada, da dada da da dada dada - yeah? Okay?” There was a moment of silence and she replied…”well I can’t possibly do that.” We were a bit taken aback - ”er, why not? You can play the accordion can’t you?” Somewhat smarted she replied…“yes I can play the accordion but that’s syncopation, it can’t be done on an accordion.” I picked up a guitar and played what we wanted her to play. She said…“that’s all very well and good but an accordion can’t do that.”
We begged to differ so a plan was formulated - while she squeezed the accordion, myself and Jason pushed the buttons and played the keys. After a fashion, job done.
So the lesson learnt was, three people using all their hands can play a two chord syncopated rhythm on one accordion.
