one month passes...
some notes from the new record:

"Jeane, If You're Ever In Portland"
could be a cover of Belle and Sebastian's "Sleep The Clock Around"

"Toby, Take A Bow"
"there is a boy that never goes out..." is possibly the best line on the record. gauzy tones and the melody line on the off-beat.

"Half Ghost"
his songs pay-off most when he ups the ante in the noise department (cf: "number ten" on the last record), but he really teases you with it here. the first verse is a killer.

"Calloused Fingers Won't Make You Strong, Edith Wong"
this is the single (or should be). VERY different from early live versions with the upbeat percussion, instead of just the lone drone. the pause then switch to double time for the last 2 verses is a very nice touch, is that a dr. rhythm (i sense some mild programming what with the snare lead-in just prior)?

"Casiotone For The Painfully Alone In A Yellow T-Shirt"
The trilogy continues... The rhythm here is that controlled-chaos (overdriven canned beats with tiny squeals of squelch-back) that he does so well.

"Roberta C."
Are your friends are smarter than you? Too smart for themselves? "is it all gonna change? maybe tonight..."

"The Attic Room"
his neatest chord progression since "baby it's you"

"Twinkle Echo"
there are tones that only exist in lo-fi heaven (cf the instrumentals on the recent sentridoh "wasted pieces" reissue)

the new album really deserves a thread of its own, it's easily in my top 5 of the year. i think it's a massive improvement on the previous two (which i like). hopefully i will find the time to write something more about it soon.

in addition to the tracks mentioned above, "hey eleanor" needs major props.

btw: the karaoke blurb is c/p'd from owen's livejournal (see above).

[this is hard to write about but what the hell]

irony defined:
when casiotone for the painfully alone starts dating your ex-girlfriend.

! I hate to say this but now I'm already imagining album number four.

And for what it's worth...

I said I wanted more gossip on ILX, but...

adaml (adaml), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 04:43 (twenty years ago) link

haha, it's all fine and dandy, i was being a tad dramatique there but still... the irony... it is rich.

i mean how painfully alone can you be touring the world with the rapture and going out with my xgf? </stand-up routine worthy of jess harvell dismissal>

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 04:48 (twenty years ago) link

you are certainly being dramatique, gygax! i was going to email you about this stunning development last night, but i thought perhaps it was a touchy subject. then lo and behold, the bombshell is broadcast across the internet...

ps- perhaps "casiotone for the painfully alone dating your ex-girlfriend" is gonna be on the next record?

i will take a raincheck on your consoling pats; however, your promise of stuffed peppers/eggplants does not meet a similar fate... what is your recipe?

look on the bright side, gygax!: if you're talking about whom I think you're talking about, well, um, oh neverfuckingmind. You have my sympathy, bro.

hstencil, Tuesday, 7 October 2003 20:26 (twenty years ago) link

i will pat you if i like, gygax!.
as far the peppers: preheat oven to 400. clean and cut in half lengthwise a bunch of giant red bell peppers, then boil them until slightly tender but not smooshy. when that's done, mix up a batch of polenta with loads of gorgonzola, olive oil, salt, pepper, and balsamic vinegar. stuff the peppers with the polenta, put them in a baking pan, and cover with tomato sauce (i use the recipe in mario batali's simple italian cooking). sprinkle some extra cheese on top of everything, and in the oven it goes until everything is bubbling and melty. while waiting for it to finish, get good and drunk on the red wine you were saving for company.

felcher = "destroy the evidence"

...which according to the lead post from a year ago (and upthread posting of the lyrics around March 24th), is one of mine too!

yes, kephm it's 100% true.

it's actually a good thing, kephm: nothing lost, much gained.

and yes, you should get to the show early!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 4 December 2003 22:38 (twenty years ago) link

I just saw him play with the Rapture at the Black Cat a couple nights ago. Excellent show. He definitely looked painfully alone though.

My favorite Casiotone song right now would have to be "Calloused Fingers..." Twinkle Echo is a big improvement and one of my favorites of the year as well.

for the next week or so, when not playing east coast shows with the rapture, owen can be found at my house. last night we watched the simple life and the o.c., then ate too much greasy chinese food. we also went through a pack of cigarettes and argued about who smoked more. the end.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 5 December 2003 00:37 (twenty years ago) link

That's funny, because Brian Eno is sleeping on our couch at the moment. He rents a lot of Jaques Tati movies and holds up cards with pictures of food on them when he wants a bite to eat.

this is also p much my favorite music rn with the possible exception of 'ladies of the canyon' and i listen to his songs everday when i ride my bike home from work in the heat, thinking about midwestern winters

The lyrics on this record are nowhere near as strong as thse on Vs. Children.

Sounds pretty though.

I assumed he was done making music when he retired CftPA; glad to see otherwise. He's so good at saying so much with so few lyrics. One of my favorite songwriters.

I really think he's a super under-appreciated, low-key, songwriting genius, thought so for years and years. His gift for both melody and economy of words = everything I look for in an artist.
