Geir didn't you like 'Eldorado'?

The late stuff was pretty samey but "Four Little Diamonds" has a great gtr intro

dave q, Friday, 26 September 2003 19:42 (twenty years ago) link

"Eldorado" is a great album too, although I think it misses something by being the last ELO album not to feature Mack as an engineer. Mack was just as instrumental in the ELO sound as was Jeff Lynne.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Saturday, 27 September 2003 00:35 (twenty years ago) link

search - livin' thing, sweet talkin' woman, evil woman (cos all songs about evil women are fantastic), telephone line, turn to stone, don't bring me down, hold on tight, can't get it out of my head, last trian to london, strange magic, shine a little love.

destroy - rockaria, rock and roll is king.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Saturday, 27 September 2003 02:49 (twenty years ago) link

The ELO compilations I merely stared at upthread, eventually I bought it. It's basically their very first album with a coupla songs added from the second. So it sounds nothing like the later Lynne-led & slickly produced ELO. But weirdly wonderful all the same, now and again.
As nobody's thrown in a sympathy vote for ELO II so far, I will then.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 27 September 2003 14:26 (twenty years ago) link

Destroy: pretty much all of it there I said it. ILM continues to mystify with its ELO love.

Ah, Dom, I totally disagree -- perhaps even disrespectfully. I'll freely admit that I was no fan until fairly recently, but listening to their box set (no, I didn't pay a cent for it) a few weeks ago, Lynne more than knew his way around a pop hook -- he knew how to make it fucking stick. Their shit is total craft, Pop w/ a capital "p" (and ludicrously Pretentious to boot). But pretty fucking undeniable.

Do you like the Move?

Just got the Greatest Hits, and it's all fully classic, esp. 'Sweet Talkin' Woman', 'Turn To Stone', 'Can't Get It Out Of My Head', 'Mr Blue Sky'.

I always hear ELO slagged as typifying this horrible genre of 70's slick pop. What other bands are included in this, and are they half as joyful?

derrick (derrick), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 04:06 (nineteen years ago) link

"'Can't Get Out of My Head'" is better than anything John Lennon wrote after 1970."

Hmmm. Good song, but is it that much better (if actually better at all) than "Jealous Guy" or "Mind Games" or "#9 Dream?"

Tim Ellison, Tuesday, 15 June 2004 04:15 (nineteen years ago) link

Derrick needs to get him some Badfinger.

I'm a lapsed ELO fan, sadly. These days I'm more likely to put on something from the first album only because its just so damn strange, particularly considering where they ended up. I've got pretty much everything they did on vinyl (and played it obsessively in my early teen years, say 1980-1985), which is pretty odd considering where I ended up with my musical tastes.

I'm sure I can sing along with everything they've done up to and including _Balance of Power_.

I need a drink now...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 06:48 (nineteen years ago) link

musically, i think Newman's take on ELO is too simplistic, but then that might just be suitably perverse enough to make his grade -- deliberately lame parody ? from one orchestrator to another ? Newman's such a fruitcake sometimes and i guess it was the music industry that was the really lame bit.

i mean, instead, why not a response to "swinging classics" and other beat orchestras from that period ? well, i guess Newman wasn't a real music-lover fan of James Last et. al., so a loving tribute to that type of stuff just wouldn't have been possible ..

Eldorado and NWR are required.

10CC! They actually are only about 1/2 as joyful but still worthwhile as far as awesomely overproduced '70s pop. Todd Rundgren is also in a slightly similar bubblegum weirdness vein.

Almost my favourite is Turn to Stone
And how 'bout Telephone Line?
I love that ELO."

I'm listening to Out Of The Blue - why isn't this up there with Pet Sounds, Revolver, Rumours etc as one of these incredible canonic records? It's a fucking pop opus and there isn't a dull moment on it. Plus, is it fair to say that ELO have had a massive influence on any modern band (Daft Punk, Basement Jaxx, Air in particular) who have a maximalist attitude to their production? All Hail Jeff Lynne!

My introduction to Jeff Lynne was The Move's "Do Ya" from the Split Ends LP. Thinking about the song brings fond memories of a girl named Lee - like you needed to know... I saw ELO at the Providence Civic Center sometime around 1977 when they were at the top of their game: Awesome light show and louder than The Who. Roll Over Beethoven!

six months pass...
To celebrate their 35th anniversary, Electric Light Orchestra is releasing expanded editions, featuring bonus tracks and liner notes by Jeff Lynne, of seven ELO titles this year. The first two, No Answer (1971) and ELO 2 (1973) are in stores NOW.

With multiple bonus tracks on each – instrumental, alternate take, and alternate mix versions – plus brand new liner notes written by ELO mastermind Jeff Lynne, the expanded editions of No Answer and ELO 2 arrived in stores March 28th on Epic/Legacy. They are the first wave of ELO expanded editions on Epic/Legacy that will continue over the course of 2006 with subsequent releases of On The Third Day (1973), Face The Music (1975), A New World Record (1976), Out Of The Blue (1977), and Balance Of Power (1986).

And this from www.ftmusic.com -

In two short months, expanded and remastered definitive editions of 'On The Third Day', 'Face The Music' and 'A New World Record' are released worldwide from May 22 onwards.

Each classic ELO album has been digitally remastered by ELO leader Jeff Lynne (with engineer Jeff Magid) from the original master tapes, only recently recovered, and are packed with rare and previously unreleased material. All have full-colour booklets with rare photos, improved front cover artwork and new liner-notes from both Lynne and ELO archivist Rob Caiger. Phase 2 follows in September.

So no remastered Out Of The Blue for a while just yet...

I just luurve Sweet Talkin Woman, but not heard it for years. In the early 80s when i were a lad people used to bring in their records to youth club, and Out of the Blue was the most popular by far. That's where I also first heard PiL and Early Fall. I bought those LPs, but not ELOs - guess I just took them for granted.

dr x o'skeleton, Tuesday, 4 April 2006 09:15 (eighteen years ago) link

Discovery has some weak spots (I'm thinking of "The Diary of Horace Wimp" in particular), but there's quality in there. "Shine a Little Love" is a terrific rock-disco number, and there's two nifty ballads, "Need Her Love" and "Midnight Blue." And the reissue from a few years ago includes a great version of Del Shannon's "Little Town Flirt" as a bonus track. I think I picked up my copy in a remaindered bin for $6.

James, Tuesday, 4 April 2006 13:30 (eighteen years ago) link

"Out Of The Blue" was remastered some years ago, along with most of their back catalogue (including "Discovery" and "Xanadu", both of which sounded like shit before the remasters).

There were never remasters released of "On The Third Day", "Face The Music" or "A New World Record" though, so it's about time they appear in a remastered form as well.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 17:26 (eighteen years ago) link

Well, a few of the albums were re-issued in about 2001 with bonus tracks, but there were still some gaps there, so it looks like it's only now that Mr. Lynne has finished the job.

Lotta Continua (Damian), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 17:42 (eighteen years ago) link

The first two ELO albums, (ELO and ELO II), were reissued in double disc editions in the UK as well, on EMI/Harvest. These are different than the new US reissues of No Answer (the American title) and ELO II that came out last week. Different cover art, even. I'm an ELO fan, but, God knows, double disc reissues are a bit too much even for me.

James, Tuesday, 4 April 2006 17:52 (eighteen years ago) link

I know most people love Out of the blue, but for me A new world record is their masterpiece. Concise, classic pop with ambition and imagination and more than a nod to the Philly soul sound of the time, amongst many other things swimming in the mix.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 18:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Has anyone heard ELO 2: Lost Planet? I gather it includes pieces of a long-lost concept album with Roy Wood that was recorded in between the first and second records...

Wow, how timely. I was just listening to Out of the Blue. ELO were the first band I became obsessed with as a kid. NWR and Out of the Blue were great. I always felt Discovery was too Bee Gees like. Their earlier albums are more tasteful but less fun. I like how their 76-77 sound got so big and ridiculous, and OOTB was like a children's record. And the animals sang, "Wonderous is our great blue ship that sails around the mighty sun and joy to everyone who rides along." Heh. Time was the first album I nearly had heart failure in anticipation. The rest of their albums were pretty embarrassing, which is why I hadn't listened to them for over 20 years. Now I'm looking forward to those remasters, go figure.

Still no expanded Secret Messages then - it was supposed to be a double originally but Lynne was told that was uneconomic in times of vinyl crisis (1983? I don't recall any vinyl crisis then. But anyway...). Apparently when reissued on CD they attempted to restore it to its original format but Lynne put the kibosh on that out of pique, so we still don't get a legit issue of "Hello Old Friend," possibly their/his best-ever song.

There's a very very long thread on the HOffman forums that's worth a read if you're interested in the history of this. The main person in the thread was working on a book which was maybe going to be proposed for 33 1/3 but it sounded like it was getting too long for that and he's been working on it for three years or something.

Anyway, how did people rate the Lynne's ELO tour from a few years ago? Wondering if I should spring for tix this summer.
