Ah, Dom, I totally disagree -- perhaps even disrespectfully. I'll freely admit that I was no fan until fairly recently, but listening to their box set (no, I didn't pay a cent for it) a few weeks ago, Lynne more than knew his way around a pop hook -- he knew how to make it fucking stick. Their shit is total craft, Pop w/ a capital "p" (and ludicrously Pretentious to boot). But pretty fucking undeniable.

I always hear ELO slagged as typifying this horrible genre of 70's slick pop. What other bands are included in this, and are they half as joyful?

Hmmm. Good song, but is it that much better (if actually better at all) than "Jealous Guy" or "Mind Games" or "#9 Dream?"

I'm a lapsed ELO fan, sadly. These days I'm more likely to put on something from the first album only because its just so damn strange, particularly considering where they ended up. I've got pretty much everything they did on vinyl (and played it obsessively in my early teen years, say 1980-1985), which is pretty odd considering where I ended up with my musical tastes.

I'm sure I can sing along with everything they've done up to and including _Balance of Power_.

i mean, instead, why not a response to "swinging classics" and other beat orchestras from that period ? well, i guess Newman wasn't a real music-lover fan of James Last et. al., so a loving tribute to that type of stuff just wouldn't have been possible ..

10CC! They actually are only about 1/2 as joyful but still worthwhile as far as awesomely overproduced '70s pop. Todd Rundgren is also in a slightly similar bubblegum weirdness vein.

They are the first wave of ELO expanded editions on Epic/Legacy that will continue over the course of 2006 with subsequent releases of On The Third Day (1973), Face The Music (1975), A New World Record (1976), Out Of The Blue (1977), and Balance Of Power (1986).

There were never remasters released of "On The Third Day", "Face The Music" or "A New World Record" though, so it's about time they appear in a remastered form as well.

Has anyone heard ELO 2: Lost Planet? I gather it includes pieces of a long-lost concept album with Roy Wood that was recorded in between the first and second records...

It was re-issued with extra tracks in 2001 along with Discovery, Time and Secret Messages. It's only now that the rest of their albums are being re-issued in this format.

Shame he's passed on at such a relatively young age. Underrated bassist, the sound he got on Discovery is begging to be sampled. He added some nice vocal touches too, especially on 'Evil Woman'. RIP.

I remember an ELO feature in Mojo back in 2001 where Kelly talked about becoming a cabbage for eight months and losing both his home and his first wife following his ill-advised and only partially successful legal action against JL. It seems that he ended up playing pubs for beer money. He was wrong to sue but in the end deserved better.

RIP. Now I guess Jeff Lynne, Bev Bevan and Richard Tandy were key members to a larger extent, but Grouchott contributed to most of their best albums.

on the remastered edition, you get all the orchestral interludes as one track, as they recorded it and then split it up across the album.

"Still no expanded Secret Messages then - it was supposed to be a double originally but Lynne was told that was uneconomic in times of vinyl crisis (1983? I don't recall any vinyl crisis then. But anyway...). Apparently when reissued on CD they attempted to restore it to its original format but Lynne put the kibosh on that out of pique, so we still don't get a legit issue of "Hello Old Friend," possibly their/his best-ever song"

There's a very very long thread on the HOffman forums that's worth a read if you're interested in the history of this. The main person in the thread was working on a book which was maybe going to be proposed for 33 1/3 but it sounded like it was getting too long for that and he's been working on it for three years or something.

Anyway, how did people rate the Lynne's ELO tour from a few years ago? Wondering if I should spring for tix this summer.

I have friends who saw it in NY last time and said it was awesome and tons of fun.
