Is it even possible for a normal hardworking guy to get Photoshop for FREE?

Ah, see, i'm web guy. You need it even more than I do.

There are only three ways I can think of that anyone may obtain for free that which normally costs money: as a gift, by theft, or by accidental discovery of a lost article. Not one of these methods has the slightest relation to how normal or hardworking you may be.

I used to use Degas Elite and it was incredible. It had limited pixel animating capabilities which was possibly the bet thing ever.

Ha, I think it was Degas that I mucked about on at my French Exchange student's Atari ST. I made some squiggles and the family got very excited, said things like "Zut Alors! Matisse!" and took photos of the screen.

Yeah! It was for Atari ST. It was leagues above other paint programs back in the day. I mean, you could custom-make little patterns in that pattern box, test all of the text options before laying it down, create custom line types (like, if you wanted one with long line short line long line short line etc), plus the animation... oh the animation. SO GOOD.

Also, the "rays" was amazing, it was like putting down a line, then when you click, it starts a new line from the original point. Why isn't paint as awesome as degas elite?! Also, k-line was like polygon but you didn't have to close the shape! clearly useful!

Lightroom is good enough that I'm willing to fork over $299 for a retail copy.

Lightroom is brilliant. The editing works much better in 1.1, and it finally has curves. All it needs is (feathered) selections and I'd be able to forget about Photoshop for most stuff.

lightroom! Aperture is good, but it's slow and makes the fans on my mac go nuts. The searching on Lightroom is aeons faster as well.

Lightroom - the controls are more Photoshop-like (thus intuitive) and robust. I found it much easier to sharpen images, use curves, alter colors, etc.. It's basically all of the good photo tools from Camera Raw and Photoshop without all the other stuff that's more useful for graphic artists and designers. I haven't tried to dodge and burn images - that may be the missing feathered selections stet refers to.

Aperture probably still has a superior filing system, but I've not made good use.

oh, nice, i'll have to d/l that. i tried GIMP @ home and have yet to do any editing with it that didn't look like garbage. I use photoshop at work..
