His character is funny in State & Main, but I remember him playing it a little straight?

Jordan, Friday, 11 May 2007 17:31 (sixteen years ago) link

I really don't see how anything besides Glengarry Glen Ross can win this.

His first appearances on SNL

kingfish, Friday, 11 May 2007 17:47 (sixteen years ago) link

his GGR character/dialogue are great, but honestly I don't think he got really good at doing that kind of performance until later on, if you compare it to, say, The Departed.

I might have to vote for SNL, too. If for nothing else than that season's greetings sketch. "All you can do is trust in God, or, if you prefer, voodoo."

'boy, what a year it's been! with me acting, and you doing whatever it is that you do'

'how about that sports team we both root for? they should fire or rehire that manager of theirs... he's a character!'

He was pretty good in The Aviator too.

My vote for Miami Blues would be in proxy for Jennifer Jason Leigh so it was probably smart to leave that off the list.

zaxxon25, Friday, 11 May 2007 18:53 (sixteen years ago) link

I guess I'll have to vote for "30 Rock" since I don't remember his character in GGR.

Get them to SIGN on the LINE which is DOTTED

Joe, Friday, 11 May 2007 20:00 (sixteen years ago) link

Alec Baldwin playing hot, lithe person of conscience = DUD
Alec Baldwin playing swarthy, porcine assholes = CLASSIC

Hey, it was a long time ago.

o. nate, Friday, 11 May 2007 20:08 (sixteen years ago) link

One other huge advantage: the man is a fucking OTTER.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 11 May 2007 20:11 (sixteen years ago) link

wait wait back up, explain your otter theory.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Friday, 11 May 2007 20:23 (sixteen years ago) link

I believe he's referring to AB's hirsuteness.

David R., Friday, 11 May 2007 20:24 (sixteen years ago) link

oh well that's boring.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Friday, 11 May 2007 20:25 (sixteen years ago) link

He was brilliant in Along Came Polly. The bathroom scene with Stiller is one of the funniest I've ever seen.

I think Lymelife--admittedly a lesser Ice Storm--is a good, underseen film.

I finally saw Miami Blues for the first time this year, and I didn’t know he played one of the most entertaining types of characters: a chaos agent who does everything for inscrutably dumb reasons.
