It's a bit strange that it took *that long* for something greater than 5.5 to hit SoCal.

There used to be 6.0+'s every two years BACK IN MY DAY

ANyway, i hope there are very little to no injuries.

A little memory to take home with you.

Lots of books off the shelves in the library here.

no, it was gentle so methinks it's a slip fault (chino fault) rather than the thrust fault like Whittier narrows.

As a native Californian I thought I was used to earthquakes (was around in SF for the '89 Loma Prieta quake), but my heart is pounding. I'm in the city next to the epicenter.

I was taking a shower on the 2nd floor (lots of swaying) when it happened. I finished up fast in case there were strong aftershocks. Phew. No damage in the house. No gas smells or power/water outage. My housemates, who are from out-of-state, freaked out.

Melinda Mess-injure, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 20:18 (fifteen years ago) link

Wheeeeeeee!

One broken vase, couple of books off the shelves, some really pissed-off rabbits, some sleeping other critters, some terrified kittens. Oh, and the dishwasher slid out a bit.

Me? Was standing in the doorway and considering giving-up atheism. This is an OLD building and we're up a few stories, so things really moved.

MsLaura, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 22:53 (fifteen years ago) link

I somewhat dread to imagine what my apartment looks like, but it's nearer the ground and a more recently constructed building. Still I figure there's a few books on the floor at least.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 22:53 (fifteen years ago) link

this building was built in 1929 (i'm on the 2nd floor) and the ONLY sign that a quake hit here was that the medicine cabinet door popped open. nothing fell, nothing broke...

get bent, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 23:07 (fifteen years ago) link

it's a good thing bookshelves exist. otherwise it'd be a lot harder to get a feel for a quake's magnitude.

What's the general anxiety level with you Californians then about earthquakes?

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Wednesday, 31 December 2014 00:04 (nine years ago) link

we've been under threat of a BIG ONE for as long as I've been alive.. worst one I was in was Northridge and a bunch of our stuff fell down but not much damage.. if you worry about this sort of stuff every day you'll die early.

panettone for the painfully alone (mayor jingleberries), Wednesday, 31 December 2014 00:07 (nine years ago) link

The Big One is one of those things that people generally don't think about or even plan for in their day-to-day lives, even though Northern Californians are basically due to get hit with it any time now. I do know that we've had seismic retrofits in a lot of places in the Bay Area.

Baruch Olbermann (Leee), Wednesday, 31 December 2014 00:18 (nine years ago) link

We maintain emergency kits. Other than that I dont really worry about it cuz whats the point.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 31 December 2014 01:50 (nine years ago) link

I'm a little nervous about the big one hitting bc our duplex was built in 1919 and it's two stories. it survived northridge I guess. I try to be prepared but I also don't think about it. Everyone I know assumes a 7.0 will hit sooner rather than later but then again we all might be mouldering away dead for years before it occurs. Who knows?

LIKE If you are against racism (omar little), Wednesday, 31 December 2014 02:28 (nine years ago) link

There was an article in the latimes about how the water system will break into a million pieces once a big quake hits. Really should have water on hand. =\

panettone for the painfully alone (mayor jingleberries), Wednesday, 31 December 2014 03:40 (nine years ago) link

I used to think abt quakes more when I worked on the top floor of an old building on spring st in downtown. not sure if one of those big lads would collapse in a quake but a lot of the facades would drop right down onto the streets and sidewalks.

LIKE If you are against racism (omar little), Wednesday, 31 December 2014 04:19 (nine years ago) link

i would have second and third thoughts about moving to california for this very reason. although these days i probably should be just as worried about the eastern seaboard. basically my plan to buy up land in michigan's upper peninsula really ought to be taking shape by now.

I dunno. (amateurist), Wednesday, 31 December 2014 14:14 (nine years ago) link
