The only thing my Dad cares about is that I keep my hair long. Not because of femininity, but because he is an HIPPIE - his hair is longer than mine, after all.

My Mum used to have these really cool napkin rings that were made of filaments of clear plastic of some kind - they were great because I could connect them end to end to conduct experiments in how fibre optics transmit and bend light and the like.

I am sick today so I am probably not making much sense.

mom used to really get onto us doing anything to our hair. dying, cutting, it was all bad.

when i was in high school i looked like a mennonite (this is poss inaccurate) cause i wasn't allowed to cut my hair. at 18 i cut it to my shoulders and thought i was a huge rebel

Ugh, I cannot believe that at my advanced age, I still need my mom to wade in and break it up when my sister starts acting like a total tosser, ie. acts all outraged that anyone would have the audacity to hold her to normal human standards of behaviour.

wow what kind of stuff does she do

Between us, we were awarded $2500 by a relative's estate. Sister dearest was holding my half for when I needed a plane ticket, but helped herself to this money without asking permission when she was 'between paychecks' (if she had asked permission and explained her circs, I'd definitely have allowed it, NBD). She's never been able to pass a cookie jar without thrusting her hand into it. As luck would have it, I needed some of this money last week and asked her to wire some of it. She couldn't, blamed being 'between checks' again. Between the lines of my messages one could read 'well, you could have asked permission and if you didn't STEAL we wouldn't be having this conversation'. Cue all sorts of bad deflection/puffed-up entitlement ie. CAN'T YOU SEE I AM TRYING TO RUN A BUSINESS HERE/I WORK SO HARD/STOP TREATING ME LIKE A TWO YEAR OLD. Also, I am rude because I never ask how she is or make small-talk when we're in this situation. RAGE.

Additionally, all under-duress communication from my sister must include (possibly by statute) overuse of exclamation marks and at least one incidence of 'could of'/'should of' in each small paragraph. DOUBLE RAGE.

OK that last bit alone would make me punchy let alone the rest!

Pureed Moods (Trayce), Wednesday, 8 August 2012 08:11 (eleven years ago) link

oh man, that is not okay. i'm really sorry, suzy.

Between the lines of my messages one could read 'well, you could have asked permission and if you didn't STEAL we wouldn't be having this conversation'.

honestly, it sounds like you handled this pretty controlledly. i think i would have been incoherent with rage and yelled at her.

horseshoe, Wednesday, 8 August 2012 13:37 (eleven years ago) link

It was via the magic of Facebook messages so there was no opportunity for DECIBELS.

My MO for dealing with her incoherent messages is to a) use multi-syllabic fifty-center vocab words or shoehorn in a correct 'could have' in any response and b) go into total Vulcan mode. After 20+ years of this crap (she has stolen from my mom to gamble in the past) she is very, very lucky there are approximately 4000 miles between us.

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE GUY WHO HELPFULLY ANNOUNCED “DAAAAAMN BITCH, YOU FAT!” TO ME IN THE TARGET PARKING LOT THIS MORNING

You probably think the only place I belong is wherever you can’t see me, ideally in the dark, behind closed doors. You need protection from having my big old fat self out there polluting your visual landscape, like I think I have a right to go anyplace I want, like I think I have a right to force people who find my body offensive to look at me. How you must suffer. Allow me to break out the world’s fattest violin.

I don't know what I was hoping for when I searched for "ram with devil horns" but I definitely did not find the cute picture of a ram throwing devil horns that I was hoping form. Or even a particularly demonic looking ram.

rayuela, Friday, 10 August 2012 04:26 (eleven years ago) link

Things ILX has taught me:

1) a well deployed gif in the right place can be awesome
2) you don't have to pretend you like music that does nothing for you in order to impress a dude
3) you don't have to pretend you don't like the music that you do because a dude might sneer at you
4) you don't have to spend time talking to someone who repeatedly ignores your boundaries
5) trust your instincts, if everyone is defending/promoting someone who made you v v uncomfortable, you do not have to agree
6) you don't have to feel sorry for or guilty about 2, 3, 4 or 5

These are things that have been bouncing around my head all night. I haven't slept very well.

I hate the shirt I'm wearing today and I'm not cold but have nipples for miles. Actually, I hate the skirt I'm wearing, too, or maybe it's the skirt with the shirt. Anyway, one of those days.

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 16:03 (eleven years ago) link

Hate those kinds of days.

Shepton Mullet (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 16:11 (eleven years ago) link

Sometimes on those days I go to the local "cheap clothes for $10" store and just replace part of my outfit. I know the $5 t-shirts are sewn by paralyzed enslaved orphans in a country wracked by civil war, global warming, and the seven plagues but sometimes professional embarrassment is too high a price.

rayuela, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 16:23 (eleven years ago) link

You know that moment where you're kind of annoyed about something, but not seriously annoyed, just "this is annoying" kind of level of annoyed? And then someone comes in and makes out like you are being "crazy shouting lady"? And that characterisation, which you feel is totally unfair, *that* flips you into full-on rage mode? That.

(It's almost like they know that that this is a thing that will completely unbalance you, and so that's why they deploy it.)

But never mind.

Shepton Mullet (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 16:24 (eleven years ago) link

ms. cookie (carl agatha), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 16:27 (eleven years ago) link

In small mercies, I really like the shirt I'm wearing today. I should concentrate on that instead. It's one of the things I got in the Laurel-inspired shopping trip.

yes.

once i was giving a coworker shit about saying some mildly misogynistic stuff, but it was a happy hour and everyone was kind of drunk so i was trying to keep my tone light, and he got all, c'mon, you're being too sensitive!!! and then i yelled at him for real.

check the name, no caps, boom, i'm (Laurel), Wednesday, 15 August 2012 16:30 (eleven years ago) link

I know I shouldn't do this, because I will get accused of all sorts of terrible things, but, WCC, are you talking about this post?

this thread is like when you're talking to someone in a hallway and they start to describe an argument they recently had with someone. in telling the story the gradually shift into a mode where they're impersonating the argument. then they get really into it and you, as a listener, are morphed into the person that they recently had the argument with, and pretty soon you're just getting yelled at in a hallway

― Thanks WEBSITE!! (Z S), Wednesday, August 15, 2012 3:57 PM (1 hour ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Because it specifically says that THE WHOLE THREAD is like that. And other people who follow it suggest it should be an ENTIRE BOARD DESCRIPTION. It is not targeted at you, it is not even gendered.

Nobody called you a crazy shouting lady. Saying that is not lampshading or gaslighting, it is simply the truth. They may have made you feel small by reminding you of other times that people have called you such things, but they didn't do it themselves. I am not saying that you're not allowed to feel hurt that your participation in the thread is described as such. I'm just saying that it was not aimed at your participation alone. I'm not saying that your past experiences are invalid or non-existent, I'm just saying that the words that are actually written are important, as well as the history you bring to them.

emil.y, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 16:44 (eleven years ago) link

two weeks pass...

not sure where else to put this but: http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/7595532/Breastapo-tactics-upset-bottle-feeders

this is so insane to me!!!!

The ministry contracts the NZ Breastfeeding Authority to audit maternity facilities to be "baby friendly", as part of New Zealand's obligations to the World Health Organisation and Unicef. Nearly all maternity facilities are currently accredited.

Under the baby-friendly policy, mothers must make an “informed decision on feeding”, but formula cannot be discussed during antenatal classes. To retain the baby-friendly accreditation, maternity units must maintain an 80 per cent exclusive breastfeeding rate.

there was an earlier article on this, and it mentioned some tv ad (i forget the subject) which featured a famous NZ sportsman bottle-feeding his kid - ppl went CRAZY complaining that it promoted formula-feeding... no mention of how maybe there was BREAST MILK in that bottle, so that both parents can share parenting duties????

just1n3, Sunday, 2 September 2012 00:28 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, it's nuts. I understand encouraging breastfeeding - it's healthier and more economical for a start. There are, however, many reasons that might make it extremely difficult or impossible for some women to breastfeed and that those mothers are made to feel bad about deciding to formula feed really makes me angry. In some cases choosing to formula/bottle feed is really a decision that enable the mom to be the best parent she can be (work, stress because bfeeding isn't going well, whatever) and it's awful how women who choose that route are often demonized.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Sunday, 2 September 2012 02:23 (eleven years ago) link

Yep, friend of mine couldnt bf due to severe mastitis, and thanks to naggy snippy people judging her she ended up having a breakdown :/

frances boredom coconut (Trayce), Sunday, 2 September 2012 02:36 (eleven years ago) link

As I've said on some other thread, the claims people make about breastfeeding are overstated most of the time at best and misleading at worst. There are simply too many variables that affect children's health outcomes...to say for certain that breastfeeding plays as big a role as we're currently saying it does is bananas.

kate78, Sunday, 2 September 2012 02:37 (eleven years ago) link

one of the women interviewed in that article had someone say to her 'if you can't breastfeed you shouldn't breed' - what the fucking fuck?????
