I'm not that good at it. I just can't think well in the spatial terms that sem to be required for the game. But chess is obviously classic. I'm just dud at it.

signed up and challenged you. had never heard of the site before. chess is fun, but i hate losing* and i am so average.

*interestingly enough i am a good sport in every game, but with chess. i don't know, it's an insult to my intelligence or something.

Ludo, Monday, 15 June 2009 13:17 (fourteen years ago) link

ah i finally realized it's correspondence chess. not that i have any problem with that, though i really achieve best results against fast players in fast games.

Ludo, Monday, 15 June 2009 13:18 (fourteen years ago) link

i try to play as quickly as i can as much as my work day can allow

ken "save-a-finn" c (ken c), Monday, 15 June 2009 15:42 (fourteen years ago) link

anyone have any good videos/tutorials for white lines after a fried liver attack? i can consistently execute the attack but then the king will go e6 and i'll get flustered and make mistakes (esp bringing my queen in to try and capitalize on the knight sac). if king goes e8 or g8 (latter consistently a quick checkmate) not so much trouble but how do u take advantage of the e6 move protecting the knights?

The Chess.com app has some good training exercises around this.

this account is excellent for gambit traps, dirty tricks in gambits etc: http://www.youtube.com/user/gunj17

there's probably a few instructive MatoJelic videos too

there's parts 2 and 3 as well. essential for white to look out for

four weeks pass...

been following the WC clash on Mato Jelic's channel - Karjakin takes the lead against Carlsen after 8 games. a high level of play but it's been fairly risk-averse. karjakin has been exceptionally solid though. wonder if anyone else is paying attention

imago, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 01:14 (seven years ago) link

i've only just been keeping tabs but haven't read any of the games yet -- which one is the best so far?

Mordy, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 01:15 (seven years ago) link

not this one, weirdly, although it's the only win. i think game 3 approaches minor classic status:

Ty lj, I enjoyed that! Will subscribe to his videos. Karjakin is a cool mofo to defend like that.

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 17:07 (seven years ago) link

yeah that was v impressive forcing a draw down a piece against the best player in the world

Mordy, Wednesday, 23 November 2016 17:22 (seven years ago) link

fuck me game 12 is probably the most mind-numbing thing i've seen, they'd better serve up a hell of a tiebreaker

Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Tuesday, 29 November 2016 22:57 (seven years ago) link

Carlsen finishes it with a lovely queen sacrifice. The flashiest moment in all 12 games and 4 rapids, and it came at the end

Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Wednesday, 30 November 2016 23:46 (seven years ago) link

(He was already going to win, a point ahead and far stronger in a game Karjakin had to win)

Any thoughts on this? The computer rates my move (Bd4) a mistake in favor of Bc4 but why would Black move Nc6 next and not just grab my Bishop w/ fxe5 and then I'm down a bishop? I feel like I must be missing something here.

Mordy, Sunday, 22 January 2017 20:13 (seven years ago) link

because then your surviving bishop takes on e6 and he's in a world of shit

illbient microtonal poetry Surbiton (imago), Sunday, 22 January 2017 20:21 (seven years ago) link

yeah i just saw bc bxe6 is checkmate if not Nc6

Mordy, Sunday, 22 January 2017 20:22 (seven years ago) link

*they're

sorry for gendering your opponent

they can block with the knight but they're losing the knight and the game p quickly thereafter

illbient microtonal poetry Surbiton (imago), Sunday, 22 January 2017 20:23 (seven years ago) link

or not exactly mate (he can still go Kd7 to block, then i guess Bxd7 check so at the very least you come away w/ the knight
