There's a ton of those I haven't heard, but The Cosmic Dead is a number-one absolute must see. Schedule your day around that, if needed. Their live stuff I've heard is phenomenal.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 2 August 2012 14:55 (eleven years ago) link

awesome, thanks man, will do!

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Thursday, 2 August 2012 14:56 (eleven years ago) link

I will second Sylverster Anfang II and James Blackshaw too though.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 2 August 2012 14:58 (eleven years ago) link

Sylvester even.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 2 August 2012 14:58 (eleven years ago) link

yeah they're both on the list too, I would think they'll be relatively high up the bill as well.

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Thursday, 2 August 2012 15:00 (eleven years ago) link

Dagger Brothers blurb: "If you are brave enough to attend you may be sexually assaulted". I'm so there!

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Thursday, 2 August 2012 15:01 (eleven years ago) link

kogumaza will hit the same spot the cosmic dead will. Their album and 7" i have is great and emil.y will back me up

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 2 August 2012 15:02 (eleven years ago) link

ugh at that blurb

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 2 August 2012 15:02 (eleven years ago) link

Sounds like I need to check out Kogumaza then!

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 2 August 2012 15:03 (eleven years ago) link

Kogumaza are good, I think they reward concentration if you get me

I saw the Dagger Brothers years ago at a club night. they played after The Bug and came straight on stage as they have no equipment aside from backing tapes; their set consisted of following the MCs (Warrior Queen and possibly Flowdan?) around while they were trying to pack up, and being 'homoerotic' towards in in an unsuccessful effort to provoke them. then one of them jumped off the stage and broke a girl's ribs. also I was introduced to one of them a long time after this and in lieu of shaking my hand he bit it hard enough to break the skin

anyway I just wanted to mention I hate them

price lo matalan (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 2 August 2012 15:18 (eleven years ago) link

Bear in mind I'm not a metaller, but here's my round-up.

Essential:
The Telescopes
Sylvester Anfang II
Kogumaza
Bilge Pump

Highly Recommended:
Cold Pumas
Cosmic Dead
Embla Quickbeam
La La Vasquez
The Pheromoans
Sauna Youth
Shudder Pulps
The Sticks

Recommended:
Covergirl
Fairhorns (this is Matt Team Brick, if I had seen him I'm sure it'd be more than recommended, but is this low solely because I have not yet witnessed this particular act)
The Family Elan
Fat Bicth
Hamilton Yarns
Sweet Williams
Woolf

Ones that didn't make it into this list are still probably brilliant. Also, it's not clear when the 'Bang the Bore' stuff is on but if you get a chance to see Bolide, who are involved with that, then do. If you like poetry even a little bit then go and see Keston Sutherland. If you like poetry more than a little then also go and see Francesca Lisette and Alan Hay.

emil.y, Thursday, 2 August 2012 15:18 (eleven years ago) link

Cheers Emily, so basically I can't go too far wrong! I actually knew Matt Team Brick a little bit when I lived in Bristol over ten years ago- Bugbrand is from the same scene, so I'll definitely be catching both of them.

On the arts side, I'm going to play that by ear I should think. Lots of interesting looking things there too...

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Thursday, 2 August 2012 15:21 (eleven years ago) link

Can't disagree with everything said above, just to add that Shigeru Ihara is worth seeing in whatever guise he's playing under so I wouldn't miss Scotch Bonnet either.

Although obviously he's not in the tone of this thread.

If you're into things like The Heads, White Hills, et al, can recommend You’re Smiling Now But We’ll All turn into DEMONS. Not seen them live, but recently picked up their _Contact High_ album & it's great.

four weeks pass...

I felt compelled to bang out some reviews this week. Not sure how long this bug will stay up my butt. For several years I felt it unnecessary to write reviews when approximately three dozen sources all had reviews, but lately the albums I'm liking aren't getting much coverage at all, so I figured I should chip in.

Yeah that Goat album is very good. Here's the song "The Sun The Moon" from their 7" released earlier this year.

Tagged several times today on FB about those guys. So what's their story?

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 15 September 2012 21:32 (eleven years ago) link

Also, not quite a Stoner/Psych/Sludge/Retro/Space band, but I think when they pull out songs like this, they might be worth the attention of people who want Stoner/Psych/Sludge/Retro/Space. I don't know maybe the second is a stretch, but it's pretty heavy to my ears. (Annoying yell at the end is from the host for this show, not a band member.)

And since it hasn't been mentioned much at all on ILM, here's the whole Yamantaka/Sonic Titan album from last year (which I think is going to be issued in the U.S. this year? but not totally clear on that):

http://music.cbc.ca/#/play/CBC-Music/playlist/Yamantaka-Sonic-Titan-YTST

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 15 September 2012 22:00 (eleven years ago) link

I only just heard this album today, so I have even less than usual discourse to provide.

YT // ST is the debut album from prog-metal-avant-garde-opera art collective and hyphen necessitators YAMANTAKA // SONIC TITAN. The band was formed in 2007 in Montreal, but now spends much of its time in Toronto.

The band is centred on drummer Alaska B and singer Ruby Kato Attwood, who are both of Anglo-Asian origin. This juxtaposition is reflected all over the work, from the band’s name to the new genre of music they’ve coined “noh-wave” (a reference to a form of Japanese dance theatre and the no-wave post-punk musical movement).

They like Boris.

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 15 September 2012 22:02 (eleven years ago) link

Apologies if you're trying to keep the prog-metal-avant-garde-opera music off the Stoner/Psych/Doom/Sludge/Retro/Drone/Space thread.

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 15 September 2012 22:04 (eleven years ago) link

Saw Lumerians tonight. They were pretty good! I love this first paragraph of their wikipedia page

Lumerians is a San Francisco Bay Area based five-member[1] band which has a psychedelic[3][8] "mindbender"[9] space rock[1] sound. The group is notable for performances characterized by "transcendent live video projections" and having "incredible visuals," according to one music critic.[1] One critic described the band as "Oakland's prize pony in the Bay Area gloom-folk horse race".[8] The sound has been compared to the German experimental music known as Krautrock with overtones of 1960s music.[1]

oh yeah, duh, I was going to say AG def got me into ANO, and helped me get into the White Manna too

also: Sungod has two albums coming out this year. First one, Cuts from the Ether is already up at their Bandcamp page. It's v good, the first song "Gas is Better Than Gas" is twenty minutes long and by far my favorite. The second one Crash Galactic comes out at the end of the month.

Also, this thread reminded me of how great that Heavy Blanket record is. Maybe a stretch to consider it in this thread, but it is pretty psych. Basically J Mascis soloing over barebones drums and bass for 38 minutes.

Freak Out London

THe Victoria, London, in June

2 sets from the band who featured on the last Cardinal Fuzz release , Bowling With the Bloodied Head of Barbara Streisand.

Googling them, I found a midlands cleaning service of the same name so I hope there isn't going to be any hassle over the rights to using the name. Also taking Barbawa's name in vain is a tad sacriligious and potentially litigious innit? Tough it did occur to me that maybe the title came from a game of what is this from the image on the cover.

The format that Cardinal Fuzz is releasing things in is one that I've not encountered much before. Vinyl cds, only other place I ca,me across it to my memory was a reggae cd that came on the front of Mojo about 10 years ago. Is it more widespread? Cheaper to do limited runs in than silver cds? I think I prefer it to cdr anyway, & it does hark back to an earlier age much as a lot of the music does to some extent while updating it too.

Roll on the next releases by both band and label.

Stevolende, Thursday, 20 September 2012 07:26 (eleven years ago) link

Just got that in the post along with the 2nd pressing of You're Smiling Now...'s 2CDr which I'd missed out on 1st time round. Not had chance to listen yet though.

Remember seeing those vinyl-look CDrs for retail, guess you can still get them (not really checked as I've stuck to the same brand for years, & don't intend to change without a really good reason).
