Generally I prefer Slackk's slightly housier productions to his stiff, stop-start grime-influenced bits but Blue Sleet has grown on me a lot, I like the way it builds up.

it's a fun little tune, doesn't seem especially "trap"-influenced to me compared to a lot of 2012 productions.

^ I get your point (erm or at least I think I do) but I feel that with Slackk and a lot of other recent stuff that draws on early grime the point is that it's done as an almost scholarly exercise you're supposed to recognize the reference points. To me it's almost the dance/electronic equivalent of 'record-collection rock', where informed listeners will take pleasure in spotting all the classic building blocks and the way they've recombined.
In general I think a lot of the fans of Night Slugs and stuff with a similar aesthetic value it because it combines elements of stuff they were already into - grime, r&b, US regional club genres - and the fact that they've managed to achieve critical and dancefloor popularity with those elements feels to the long-termers like a kind of vindication.

Obv there's loads of projection and supposition in this argument - part of prob comes from my online interaction with Slackk who in his tasted comes over as an almost obsessively 'proper grime' kind of guy so it's hard not to see his doing genre exercises like this as an act of tribute on his part, paying homage to his roots. And obv the response will vary from listener to listener, and there will be some people out there going 'woah this is so fresh, how on earth did he come up with such striking synth and drum sounds?' in which case yeah you're perfectly entitled to point them straigh to things like the TNT mix (which I'm banging out right now).

Should be 'scholarly exercise where you're supposed to', posting in a bit of a rush.
More generally I admire the certainty and purity of your tastes in these things, but for better or worse it's not how I am, if I were to draw lines with that degree of confidence it would feel dishonest.

I think I may agree with Lex in that Ikonika's newest overshadows this one considerably, similar sound palette.

Still the CGI is cool, and 99% of juke/trap/whatever coming out of the UK is just annoying.

at least they're unapologetic/direct about wanting to make rap beats and do production work for mainstream vocalists, that's kind of refreshing.

yeah that's ridiculous. i don't doubt that lots of u.s. producers are aware of them, but clearly a ton of ideas have flowed the other way.
