another good indicator is when you see korean restaurants near subway stairs, you are near a subway, but if you just see korean restaurants, you are probably in korea

um, last time I checked, korean subways are accessed by fire pole, not staircase. Nice try.

ahhh dangit those cutups in the swamp replaced all the staircases with fire poles, winchester is gonna be pissed

Do people steal the flags, then run down into the subways?

I think something about the college application/essay-writing process has fucked up a whole generation. Like all these people are out looking for the slightest 'experience' to happen to them so they can blog about it.

did previous generations not write essays and apply to college? idgi
― reductio ad burzum (flopson), Monday, 13 August 2012 00:32 (eleven years ago) link
nah they just got in based on legacies, SAT scores, etc.
also nowadays college is super-competitive like never before, kids feel like if they didn't go to china and intern as red cross nurses or master suzuki piano level 99 they're bigass losers.
― the late great, Monday, 13 August 2012 00:46 (eleven years ago) link
o ya ok i've heard about these from american friends. i am in college right now but didn't have to write an essay, they still admit people based on legacy here thank god
― reductio ad burzum (flopson), Monday, 13 August 2012 00:52 (eleven years ago) link
well i think part of the issue here is that legacies are still in effect for competitive colleges *and* they're gradually de-emphasizing test scores / grades in favor of "well rounded" students
when i was applying to colleges, oh, about 18 years ago they were talking the same nonsense, i pretty much got in cal based on an astronomical SAT score. otherwise everyone i know who got into "good schools" had great grades and some combination of heavy-duty academic internship type experiences, varsity athletics or student leadership activities
the thing is - and i have no idea why this idea hasn't taken root - you really don't even need to go to a prestigious undergraduate school to get a good job. you can go to a combo of community college and state school, get kickass grades there, and then go to a prestigious graduate program. but i dunno, everyone thinks their kids need to go to harvard off the bat or they're just screwed for life.
― the late great, Monday, 13 August 2012 01:12 (eleven years ago) link
are you in college or "college"
― catbus otm (gbx), Monday, 13 August 2012 01:12 (eleven years ago) link
xp i regularly get my ass kicked at work by smarter people who went to cal state schools instead of UCs and ivy leagues

― pplains, Monday, 13 August 2012 02:26 (eleven years ago) link
i go to "university" ?!
tbh the whole process was seamless and i am pretty sure a machine accepted me
― reductio ad burzum (flopson), Monday, 13 August 2012 03:03 (eleven years ago) link
"uni"?
― the late great, Monday, 13 August 2012 03:25 (eleven years ago) link
What's changed is more just the competitiveness of the whole process. More kids apply to more colleges, starting their preparation earlier and putting more time and effort into their application. So having an essay topic is a big enough deal that people do certain activities with "this will make a good essay" in mind. And also with "this will make me [or in many cases my son or daughter] more 'well-rounded'" -- and I think that mentality extends itself, like having "experiences" to write about becomes a new measure of achievement.
― Will Chave (Hurting 2), Monday, 13 August 2012 04:08 (eleven years ago) link
And I'm sort of extending what you're saying into like "arranging your brunch plate with Instagram in mind"
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 13 August 2012 04:24 (eleven years ago) link
that's actually a pretty decent analogy
― the late great, Monday, 13 August 2012 04:25 (eleven years ago) link
kids : brunch :: parents : yelpers
idk i was always a big reader so i think i sort of had some idea that everything i did aka an 'experience' had some kind of future purpose like that at least in the back of my mind, like it would inform writing about it later in some way

This is like the other side of engaging in intentionally reckless behavior (dating highly unsuitable people, for instance) in order to weather oneself while still young and fresh. Is this what young people do now? No more self-destruction?

You're in Canada iirc? I didn't think legacy was a thing here? Centralized computerized admissions based on hs report cards sounds about right.

i do feel like some (most) of the people posting these things probably only really have trouble finding parking spaces or a good mocha latte and never actually have to climb insurmountable mountains of adversity. but what do i know, maybe they do. but if they do why are they on facebook so much? they should be outside climbing mountains of turmoil or something.

when you think about it, it's also kind of amazing that even the GOP (or a segment of it) pushed hard for a black presidential candidate this year. Sure, it was mostly out of a misguided attempt to seem *not racist* and to get like 2 black people to vote for them, but still.
