well the ball itself is not even the #1 cause of head injuries I would imagine?

iatee, Sunday, 29 July 2012 22:49 (eleven years ago) link

the late great, Sunday, 29 July 2012 22:49 (eleven years ago) link

No offside. Most leagues play without an offside rule. Some leagues enforce a "three-line violation", prohibiting players from playing the ball in the air from behind the front line of their own penalty area across all three lines into the opponent's penalty area. Violations often result in a free kick for the opposing team at the front line of the offending team's penalty area.

No offisdes would result in ten players defending the box and one lone striker way out - it would lessen the back-and-forth aspect of soccer, would make counters less exciting and less likely to score and make normal build-up attacks more rare and less valuable.

sive gallus et mulier (Michael White), Monday, 30 July 2012 14:10 (eleven years ago) link

yuh no offsides would mean less attacking imo and the game would get even tighter, especially in game where fast, superior athletes can push an opposition back knowing that their backline can easily handle going up against jason roberts

i read about many of the sports on the internet and on ilxor.com and why is it that footsoccer is the one sport where ppl seem to be most precious about knowing or understanding the game? it is just hating on americans right? i enjoy that as much as the next right minded fellow but it seems like there have to be a metric tonne of less lame ways to go about it

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 12 June 2014 17:26 (nine years ago) link

Dude, I'm the one who asked where I could get American streams coz I prefer their commentators to the English ones

Who whom kissed? (imago), Thursday, 12 June 2014 17:29 (nine years ago) link

to fuel the hate that sustains you

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 12 June 2014 17:31 (nine years ago) link

Lj you know the primary commentators for American streams are all Britishers right

dan m, Thursday, 12 June 2014 17:33 (nine years ago) link

LJ you know all English-speaking commentators are fucking awful right

arid banter (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 12 June 2014 17:37 (nine years ago) link

lj u know the offsides rule is completely contrary to the spirit of the game right

lag∞n, Thursday, 12 June 2014 17:41 (nine years ago) link

just wait until the US picks up the 2022 tournament on the rebound, i'm sure Sepp will let you do whatever you want to the laws

arid banter (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 12 June 2014 17:43 (nine years ago) link

admit it wld be cool if mls changed the rule just to see right, to test it out

lag∞n, Thursday, 12 June 2014 17:44 (nine years ago) link

i wd be okay if you ran this experiment alongside a proper World Cup just so's we didn't miss out

fact

lag∞n, Saturday, 14 June 2014 16:36 (nine years ago) link

imo a klaxon should sound at randomly timed points to turn the offside rule on and off.

Merdeyeux, Saturday, 14 June 2014 17:32 (nine years ago) link

fuck it, apply that to all rules why not.

Merdeyeux, Saturday, 14 June 2014 17:33 (nine years ago) link

immediate video ref much more u&k a change needed IMO, and refs to be interviewed after each game upon request

dn/ac (darraghmac), Saturday, 14 June 2014 17:38 (nine years ago) link

yah if any sport needs to be able to review calls is soccer cause of how much individual calls can affect the outcome of the game

lag∞n, Saturday, 14 June 2014 17:57 (nine years ago) link

It would be cool if they installed like 100 cameras in the stadium and used computers to determine whether somebody was offsides or not

Like we can superimpose a down line in American football and we've been doing that for like 20 years at least

Use computers to play soccer, that's my platform

lag∞n, Sunday, 3 September 2023 17:28 (seven months ago) link

imago, Sunday, 3 September 2023 17:41 (seven months ago) link

offsides to the mm dont work under var, even when the player is actually offside (todays wasnt)

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Sunday, 3 September 2023 17:44 (seven months ago) link

why wont any league abolish offsides cmon america has multiple ones now cant a shitty one just give it a try, i need to see it, it bothers me the way america is adopting soccer just larping shit from tv wearing the scarves calling the teams fc being unreasonably attached to the offsides rule, mortifying

lag∞n, Sunday, 3 September 2023 17:47 (seven months ago) link

Funny vid, but if you tried that in a real game someone would just kick the ball off your foot before you got the chance to kick it.

Per OP 11 years ago, think they've tried getting rid of offside many times and you just get all the strikers hanging around the box with the midfielders hoofing the ball in their direction. If that's what you want to see then fair enough.

theyve never tried getting rid off offsides, at least not over a long enough stretch to let real strategy evolve, and i suspect just kicking it into the box wouldnt be where it would land, tho it would def stretch the field so to speak
