this is kinda what indoor and basketball is like except w/ soccer the field is a lot bigger so i'm not sure?

I'll get working on a modern pentathlon one

Everyone else should go watch this crazy 'water polo' business, it seems pretty dope but maybe it could be doper, idk?

boxall, Sunday, 29 July 2012 19:33 (eleven years ago) link

Or is this some sort of payback - are random Brit and Euro ppl polluting ILH with garbage about how Team USA should press full-court every possession because Barcelona etc.?

boxall, Sunday, 29 July 2012 19:39 (eleven years ago) link

can you even imagine if ILF was packed with a bunch of people who don't really have a clue what they're talking about prattling on inanely?

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 29 July 2012 19:40 (eleven years ago) link

nah come on, i'm all for threads like this, it's good to think about why you think the laws of the game work, also i'm all for thought experiments and comparative sport analysis

Shrimpface Killah (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 29 July 2012 19:40 (eleven years ago) link

lol Spiralli put it better than me

Shrimpface Killah (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 29 July 2012 19:40 (eleven years ago) link

It'd be shit.

DX Dx DX (dan m), Sunday, 29 July 2012 19:42 (eleven years ago) link

there are leagues that do crazy rules changes too, ncca men's soccer allows unlimited subs afaik

and mls of course had its own share of 'enhancements' early on

DX Dx DX (dan m), Sunday, 29 July 2012 19:44 (eleven years ago) link

ncca = ncaa

DX Dx DX (dan m), Sunday, 29 July 2012 19:45 (eleven years ago) link

i kinda think MLS should abolish offsides and change some other rules because thatd be an awesome disrespectful american thing to do, and i mean why not before you just have another second rate league, now you have a crazy second rate league thats a laboratory for the rest of the world and everyone has opinons abt it

1996-level thinking

also this is surprisingly awesome, <3 skeletor bob

While IFAB rules allow teams to substitute three players during games, MLS allowed a fourth, goalkeeper-only substitute. MLS discarded the rule after 2003 and adopted the IFAB standard, prompted in part by a match in which then MetroStars coach and former U.S. national head coach Bob Bradley used a loophole to insert an outfield player as a fourth substitute.

DX Dx DX (dan m), Sunday, 29 July 2012 19:49 (eleven years ago) link

I'm not buying that xps, there's generally a minimum discourse level on ILF, it could be higher but it towers over the inanity of this idea. If you don't have any knowledge of what the fuck you're talking about, proposing "innovations" is just disguised derision.

boxall, Sunday, 29 July 2012 19:52 (eleven years ago) link

In fairness I doubt the modern game could've been foreseen when the offside rule was introduced, so all this conjecture could be bollocks.

But see how England played against Italy? That's probably how to do it if there's no offside. Both teams playing like that.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 29 July 2012 19:52 (eleven years ago) link

(ILF open to all btw, Spiralli otm)

ok, as ILHoops mod, I would like to extend an olive branch. if u would like, u may start a lag∞n-brand THOUGHT EXPERIMENT thread of your choice on our board wherein we can imagine basketball w promotion/regulation or if u foul out/flagrant foul your team has 4 players the rest of the game. these are suggestions for THOUGHT EXPERIMENTS, but u might have other visi∞ns.

thought experiment: place additional goals at all four corners and both sides of the midfield, each player for himself, if you shoot for a goal and someone catches it you're eliminated from play

the late great, Sunday, 29 July 2012 21:06 (eleven years ago) link

the idea that all sports are as entertaining as they could be is absurd, I'm for radical changes every year until we find the true optimum entrainment level

but I'm pretty sure what would happen is all sports would evolve into American football

iatee, Sunday, 29 July 2012 21:08 (eleven years ago) link

entertainment lol iphone

iatee, Sunday, 29 July 2012 21:08 (eleven years ago) link

Both teams shoot into the same goal, goalkeeper selected from a third team imo (pro tip: don't get seats at the other end)

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 29 July 2012 21:10 (eleven years ago) link

basketball with an oval-shaped ball, bring it on.

and mls of course had its own share of 'enhancements' early on

i remember a diagram in world soccer or something that showed a proposed mls scoring system with the field cut into zones, with more points awarded the farther away from goal you scored from. did this ever happen? (was it a joke i was too young + stupid to get?)

Merdeyeux, Sunday, 29 July 2012 21:13 (eleven years ago) link

personally i think soccer and basketball are the best sports to watch because they're the closest to thing to a pickup game you get at the pro level

the late great, Sunday, 29 July 2012 21:27 (eleven years ago) link

is the game wembley a national thing or was it local to us? players shoot into the same goal, if you score you go thru to the next round, last person each round is eliminated until a final 1 on 1 round? anyway, that is what they should do instead of pens. each team picks 3 players, every knock out game has a third goalkeeper assigned.

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 29 July 2012 21:27 (eleven years ago) link

that sounds more like "gameshow" than "sport"

i think in general it's not a bad idea to consider rules that make the game more, uh, relatable or inspiring to the experience of people who play for fun, i.e. me

but also i try to hold back on judgment because i'm not familiar w/ that level of play and it's hard for me to say how a rule that impacts a pickup game one way will impact a pro level game

the late great, Sunday, 29 July 2012 21:30 (eleven years ago) link

i think serious fans of any sport probably have some ideas about how to make the sport better - rules are changed all the time to make the game more efficient or fun or high-scoring or safe or conducive to this-that etc. i definitely have my own radical ideas for the NBA

Al S. Burr! (k3vin k.), Sunday, 29 July 2012 21:34 (eleven years ago) link

personally i think soccer and basketball are the best sports to watch because they're the closest to thing to a pickup game you get at the pro level

are these also the sports most likely to use imagery of ragtag street urchins playing w/ minimal setups in their advertising?

the late great, Sunday, 29 July 2012 21:39 (eleven years ago) link

basketball and soccer def are similar in some ways, there's an elegance due to their smooth pace of the game and the athleticism of its players that is not seen with lots of other sports. american football for example is very brutish and a little slow-paced which are my major gripes with it. plus all the fatties

Al S. Burr! (k3vin k.), Sunday, 29 July 2012 21:40 (eleven years ago) link

plus like, special teams and shit

Wembley was called World Cup (or possibly World Cuppie) round my way. Poaching was the only tactic I ever had any success with, due to playing with older boys and being rubbish - an offside rule would've killed me off totally.

I would absolutely *love* to see pros playing it, yes.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 29 July 2012 21:51 (eleven years ago) link

we played a game called "butts up" that i would love see federer and nadal play

well american football is flawed because playing it means you will prob live a very miserable life afterwards, but I was just talking about entertainment value, where the only thing that the nfl could do to improve is give bonus points for trick plays

iatee, Sunday, 29 July 2012 22:12 (eleven years ago) link

change it to flag football

the late great, Sunday, 29 July 2012 22:33 (eleven years ago) link

the late great, Sunday, 29 July 2012 22:33 (eleven years ago) link

my pollyannaish hope is that American football will decline in popularity due to brain damages and that soccer will ascend

electric point-electric counterpoint (m bison), Sunday, 29 July 2012 22:36 (eleven years ago) link

yeah but if americans start seriously playing soccer there will be just as much brain damage
