I really like the 2nd record, I guess the first was more consistent

I'd be plenty thankful for introducing me to Fraser & Debolt alone but rly it's her version of 'Waltze of the Tennis Players' that sticks with me. Haven't given the second album as much time as I should've yet, maybe I resent her having such effortless power over me, not many people around whose voice hits me like hers.

Merdeyeux, Monday, 30 July 2012 01:19 (eleven years ago) link

there's a new baird sisters LP on grapefruit records out now (or soon). little bit annoying that it's vinyl only though, i'm not set up for that right now, and would like to pay for mp3s or something. second meg album wasn't quite as good as the first one, but the first one definitely set a pretty high standard. one of my favorites from the 00s.

tylerw, Monday, 30 July 2012 02:11 (eleven years ago) link

i've never really listened to her records, but i do like the espers. saw her play live uh, earlier this year? i think? and it was just okay. i don't know but i found it hard to get sucked in.

Anybody have any of the stuff from when she was still in Clock Strikes Thirteen? Is she audible on the Clientele / Clock Strikes Thirteen split?

this is really lush, looking forward to the album

ogmor, Monday, 6 April 2015 13:54 (nine years ago) link

welp, this album does not disappoint. amazing.

tylerw, Tuesday, 14 April 2015 19:22 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, I am psyched for this. She is great.

grandavis, Tuesday, 14 April 2015 19:27 (nine years ago) link

very exciting!

btw does anyone know if Espers still exists?

kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 14 April 2015 20:36 (nine years ago) link

i think they're basically done, though i don't know if they're completely broken up. baird is on the west coast now and i believe i read that greg weeks is a high school teacher now. and bassist chris smith is co-running the awesome paradise of bachelors label.

tylerw, Tuesday, 14 April 2015 20:40 (nine years ago) link

:(

after being initially so-so on it I came to love Espers III

kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 14 April 2015 21:02 (nine years ago) link

yeah i feel like i didn't appreciate that band enough! anyway, the new baird has the espers vibe aplenty.

tylerw, Tuesday, 14 April 2015 21:03 (nine years ago) link

Espers II is a towering work of art to me

tyler did you ever dig on Metal Mountains?

kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 14 April 2015 21:04 (nine years ago) link

i haven't dug too deep into them -- tower recordings related, right?

tylerw, Tuesday, 14 April 2015 22:10 (nine years ago) link

yep former members....

but yeah their 2011 album Golden Trees is otherworldly, higher recommended and if you dig Espers I think you will love it

oh cool, so pg six is in there too? his records are kind of underrated i think.

tylerw, Tuesday, 14 April 2015 22:19 (nine years ago) link

loved that Metal Mountains album back then but in my memories that track wasn't 11+ minutes long

saw her play a lovely show in london the other day, playing with i presume the same electric guitar guy on the album, whose playing is great imo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEyrIQgR4Jo

addition of that guy also allowed for a very nice rendition of espers' 'mansfield and cyclops'

live heron oblivion show from last weekend -- massive jams. http://www.nyctaper.com/2016/05/heron-oblivion-may-28-2016-union-pool/
interestingly, it seems that meg guests on the forthcoming chris robinson brotherhood album?

saw em last night; sounded gorgeous.

dc, Wednesday, 1 June 2016 14:58 (seven years ago) link

The Heron Oblivion album is amazing.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 1 June 2016 15:01 (seven years ago) link

it definitely delivers! hoping it's not a one-off -- there's a tune on that NYC Taper recording that isn't on the album...

tylerw, Wednesday, 1 June 2016 15:02 (seven years ago) link

i was at that show and it was really fuckin something. (chris forsyth + smb opened.) all the psych cliches about face melting and brain shredding were in full effect.

adam, Wednesday, 1 June 2016 15:07 (seven years ago) link

Fantastic, thanks a lot. Been surprised that i Haven't come across any live sets from them on torrent sites so far.
Was really hoping I'd find something while I waited for the lp release, & then had to hang around while I got a copy delivered since one disappeared on me.

Stevolende, Wednesday, 1 June 2016 15:26 (seven years ago) link

I should of gone to the show DC saw last night. Liking the album enough

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 1 June 2016 19:04 (seven years ago) link

pretty folk voice over psychedelic guitar freakout seems predictable at this point in time, but they do it well

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 1 June 2016 19:14 (seven years ago) link

live set is fire, really makes up for the slight daintiness i sometimes rue on the album

I picked up a second hand CD of Don't Weigh Down the Light. (I was already turned on to Heron Oblivion.) I'm really enjoying this. I suppose all of Baird's stuff is basically worth tracking down, right? I suspect it will be an availability thing here in Germany. Will check Discogs.

BTW, the CD is signed, which is nice.

Duke, Monday, 30 August 2021 21:58 (two years ago) link

It's all great — worth tracking own the Baird Sisters LP as well.

sleeve, Tuesday, 31 August 2021 18:09 (two years ago) link

Thanks. I've got two albums on the way - Dear Companion and the Lattimore collaboration. That may be enough for now. But I can keep an eye out..

Duke, Tuesday, 31 August 2021 21:59 (two years ago) link

A Meg Baird/Mega Bog collab could totally work and the names should render it inevitable. Hop on it Paradise of Bachelors.

Just popping in to remind myself and others how great the new record is. 'Ashes, Ashes' is reminding me of *The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys* this evening. Damn.
