I think the colonies have long since developed their own charactersitic idiosyncrasies.

There was this game that existed around the same time as the pre-3D GTAs called Driver.

The first one was set in Miami/SF/LA/NYC but the second was set in Chicago, Havana, Las Vegas and Rio.

I played the hell out of these 2 games. Good times.

The LA part of San Andreas was amazing, I think they should do LA again revamped.

Tokyo would be super-hott -- yakuza, geishas, neon motocycles, mechas. Shinjuku would be total eyeporn overload.

Also: Putin-era Moscow!!

Leee, Thursday, 22 January 2009 23:28 (fifteen years ago) link

Imagine if they did a Hong Kong or Japan gangster movie homage game? (Though this may be happening in part through the Chinatown Wars game, which I am looking forward to more than I thought I would) A Rockstar-realized Tokyo or HK would be incredible, though I admit having it fully acted and written in English might be weird. I like the Prohibition-era idea, too.

San Andreas * GTA IV grimness - happy fun-time wacko missions would be depressing, though.

GUN was an attempt at a GTA:Deadwood style game but i dont think anybody ever played it. also it was wasn't good.

It was ALMOST good though. There wasn't anything to do in the world, and it felt very linear. You take that template and actually make a real cowboy game with open plains and buried treasure and indian attacks and I would play the shit out of it.

When ideas like a time-travelling GTA seem like a good idea to me, I know I should be working for the Sonic Team.

CraigG, Friday, 23 January 2009 16:28 (fifteen years ago) link

GTA: Tokyo would be hella stupid, I fear. Maybe if they teamed up with a Japanese developer it could work.

Super Cub, Sunday, 25 January 2009 19:53 (fifteen years ago) link

Shit, make it the whole USA, set it in Prohibition and run moonshine from mexico in Texas and California, from appalachian stills to the midwest, from canada into NY, Chicago and Seattle, from Cuba into Florida (GTBoat?)

All y'all crying out for a Proper Gangsters GTA know that there's a sequel on the way to Mafia (which is a apparently both quite good and not confused with Godfather the video game by anyone except me)?

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 26 January 2009 10:27 (fifteen years ago) link

why would anyone set a game in montreal

mad loli vamp bone (cankles), Monday, 26 January 2009 10:35 (fifteen years ago) link

Manchester 1990 would be ace. Hacienda, Afflecks Palace, big fuckoff flares, triad. A feature length prequel to the Maccer (Shaun Ryder) story from San Andrea.

tomofthenest, Monday, 26 January 2009 14:19 (fifteen years ago) link

Andreas even.

Also would need trippy Jeff Noon side-stories.

60s London would be awesome, if only for the soundtrack. I want to do some drive-bys to merseybeat. They could get Michael Caine to do the voice-overs!

dude hooked her right on the jaw as she was walking straight towards him shouting "you're going to get life!" with her meat cleaver raised above her head

was playing VC the other day, loved the arcade quality of it - like picking up police bribes.

i hope they give better rewards in the next game. vc 100% completion gives you infinite ammo, double vehicles health. double health for vigilante missions, double armour for vigilante. GTAIV gave you NOTHING for doing anything!

F-Unit (Ste), Sunday, 16 January 2011 14:01 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah. I liked the Vice City thing of giving you small rewards for every 10 or so hidden packages too, rather than making you find all 100 to get anything, so you could just find them casually and be happy not getting every single one. Free guns and armour without any walkthrough-related guilt.

Dust, Sunday, 16 January 2011 16:15 (thirteen years ago) link

that rockstarbase article implies that GTA will start following a cycle of the three major locations for every platform iteration.

I wouldn't mind a return to Vice City but would be more interested in a location in Asia.

What an odd, pretty much content-less post. It's like the guy wanted so desperately to find out the next city that he posts a bit of utter speculation about very, very little in hopes the knowledge will appear.
