the only thing worst than seeing these clogging up my news feed, are the stupid email forwards i get get almost weekly from my MIL (200ft icebergs in lake michigan!! a military dog who saved a bunch of soldiers by ripping out the bad guy's throat and breaking down a door and untying everyone and then hugging a baby!!). whenever me or ytth respond by telling her this shit is totally fake, she calls us 'party poopers' and pouts.

about 10 years ago my aunt forwarded me one of those hoax emails about a kid dying of cancer and wanting you to forward it to x number of people, etc. this was the latest in a run of about two dozen such emails. i replied to my aunt and told her that these emails were probably fake. her response? she emailed me to say she would never speak to me again and that if i was sick she wouldn't come to my deathbed and wouldn't attend my funeral.

neither of us ever mentioned this again. i generally dislike my aunt, but we are not necessarily on bad terms. i'm assuming this incident was evidence of some very deep-seated emotional problems that are otherwise channeled into overeating and micromanaging her sons' lives.

yeah, wow. on the bright side, another good reminder to never underestimate how many people on the internet really do not understand the internet at all

A couple years ago one of my oldest irl friends posted that bonzai cats in jars thing on FB and expressed her outrage over how anyone could do that to cats. She was way pissed when I broke the news to her that bonsai kittens did not actually exist.

(✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 18:28 (eleven years ago) link

Every time I showed the Bonsai Kittens site to someone and got a horrified "oh no, how could they!" I felt like Mario eating a mushroom

PITILESS LIVE SHOW (DJP), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 18:30 (eleven years ago) link

I mean overall I'm pretty gullible (I still feel dumb for falling for IDIED's Minor Treat ice cream truck shop a couple weeks ago but I think that's mostly because I wanted to believe) but the bonsai kittens was just ridiculous. Also she was posting this in like 2008 not 2003 or whatever.

i posted a friend's fake thing about mayan ruins in the american south or something? in my defense, i didn't really read it before i shared it.

scott seward, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 19:47 (eleven years ago) link

i thought it was funny when someone posted...i wanna say it was truffaut...anyway, this old obituary because they wanted to quote something from it. but you guessed it, he got a lot of sad responses. oh my god i love his movies! r.i.p. 400 blows rules! stuff like that.

you could probably do that with a lot of people who died years ago. post an old obit and see how many sad eulogies you get.

it misconstrues the purpose of wishing on a star tho, youre not wishing that the star is currently twinkling in its home and the whole thing is ruined if its not

lag∞n, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 23:53 (eleven years ago) link

but the star you are wishing on doesn't exist.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 23:57 (eleven years ago) link

you wish for things that dont exist to exist so maybe non existant stars are best for that think abt it

lag∞n, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 23:59 (eleven years ago) link

people throw pennies in the water and they kinda hope they get some future action outta that. a hopeful race.

scott seward, Thursday, 26 July 2012 00:00 (eleven years ago) link

there is about one star born each year in our galaxy

the number of stars in the galaxy is approximately constant

so about one star dies each year in the milky way

there are about 10 billion stars in the galaxy

therefore a random star has a 1 in 10 billion chance of exploding each year.

we can't see individual stars outside or galaxy. the galaxy is about 100 000 light years across. so let's say the most distant star you can observe with the naked eye is 100 000 light years away.

then putting it all together the chance a random star has died since the light you are now observing left it is, at most, 1 in 100 000
