don't forget "Sweetness and Light" and "De-Luxe" by Lush (although I don't think "De-Luxe" made a true impact until '91)

Cradle of Love anyone??

And Tic Tac Toe vs Mentirosa would make a natural poll (although Mentirosa would crush it I hope)

Pumping on Steel > Cradle of Love

(that's probably just imho, though)

it peaked on the charts in 1990 but late enough in the year that it was only on the year-end Hot 100 for '91

nakhchi little van (some dude), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 13:30 (eleven years ago) link

I'd never heard the Onyx song till xhuxk posted it on Facebook sometime last year, so he gets credit for that one; knowing only their later hit, I was majorly surprised by how lyrical it is. Vagaries of the calender: add "Roam" to my list--the album's '89, but yes, '90 for the single--also Loose Ends' "Don't Be a Fool," which I had on a '91 year-end (must have appeared very late in '90).

clemenza, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 13:35 (eleven years ago) link

"Don't Be A Fool" charted in the UK during August/September 1990.

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 14:13 (eleven years ago) link

"Enjoy the Silence." Just listened to it this morning, actually.

LimbsKing, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 14:14 (eleven years ago) link

Possibly: Black Box - Everybody Everybody. In my world, that song was everywhere and yet somehow a little obscure and under the radar at the same time. I didn't actually here it that often, but then I would catch a glimpse of it unexpectedly.

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 14:20 (eleven years ago) link

The best song from 1990 was Dub Be Good To Me. A special year in my heart. I got a radio for Christmas '89 and it was the first step into appreciating music. I got Now 17 with my pocket money and by mid-year was keeping an insanely keen eye on the pop charts. A wholly overlooked year for pop.

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 14:21 (eleven years ago) link

I was gonna say 3AM Eternal, but that was '91 now I check.

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 14:23 (eleven years ago) link

Eric B & Rakim - Let the Rhythm Hit Em is another one of my favorite's from 1990, and might have been my favorite at the time, but I liked some much that year that it's hard to say.

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 14:28 (eleven years ago) link

i was pretty deep into that album at the time.

scott seward, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 14:32 (eleven years ago) link

youtube comment on a Technotronic track:

if we still danced like that in every video like we did in the 90s the obesity problem in america would be solved

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 14:34 (eleven years ago) link

A couple of my favorite 1990 songs that I didn't hear until much later:

Grupo Niche - Cielo de Tambores
Willie Rosario - Anuncio Clasificado (Damelo)

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 14:47 (eleven years ago) link

Honourable mentions:

Mantronix ft. Wondress: Got To Have Your Love
JT & The Big Family: Moments In Soul
Orbital: Chime
Primal Scream: Loaded
FAB: Thunderbirds Are Go!*
Family Stand: Ghetto Heaven
House Of Love: Shine On
Don Pablo's Animals: Venus*
Chad Jackson: Hear The Drummer Get Wicked
Adamski: NRG

*I was 9 yrs old, okay?

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 14:48 (eleven years ago) link

1990 was unheralded because it was the last year that you could pinpoint tracks that fell between classic 80s electro and 90s rave/club music - Killer and Got To Have Your Love are good examples tracks that fall between that category.

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 14:50 (eleven years ago) link

Also, loved this at the time, and still like it--probably my favorite PTV acid house song, in this particular mix:

TKK released Confessions of a Knife
Nitzer Ebb released Showtime
KMFDM released Naive
Skinny Puppy released Too Dark Park
Renegade Soundwave released In Dub
Severed Heads released "Big Car" (remix)

Officially released in fall of 1990 although didn't hit it big til next year... "Man in the Box" by Alice in Chains. The rest of the album isn't great but "Dirt" and "Jar of Flies" are.

Then I saw that BBD Poison is listed as meh, and realized that this is a list from some alternate universe that is almost exactly like ours except for 1 detail.

Leaden sexism. Didn't even need it then, not when his New Edition bros released comparable hits and BBD wrote and produced Another Bad Creation and the first Boyz II Men album.
