Question: did Pennington ever have a good arm, or was he always a touch / short route type of QB?

As for Chad's offensive failings, I think some of the blame has to be shared w/ the Jets' system under Herman Edwards & Paul Hackett -- thanks to my diehard J-E-T-S fan friend, I saw way too many games where there were way too many 3rd-and-longs (between 6-8 yards) that ended w/ completions 2+ yards short of the down marker.

"BUT HE HAD ONE GOOD FUCKING SEASON!"

No

re: the chad

i think you could argue he had at least two pretty good seasons and two serviceable ones. i can think of many guys who came into the league w/ a higher profile who did not fare as well.

Won't argue with you there--the Jets had nothing to lose with him and got a hell of a lot more than they bargained for in 2002. but then again, it's not saying much--high profile QBs regularly fail, lest the fates of Cade McNown, Ryan Leaf, et al be remembered

dude was never the same after all the surgeries, became more turnover prone.

but hey, he's a Jet, what could you expect....

Chad Pennington might be a good pickup for a team like the Vikings, even as insurance. Pennington is steady and if they can keep him off his back and put the weight on the running game, I think he would be fine. The guy understands the game. Pennington's career completion rate is 65.8, that is freakin' excellent and the guy is not a total interception hog. He just has gotten pounded playing for the Jets, but I could see it working in the right situation ala Brad Johnson or Trent Dilfer. I think he would be perfect for the Vikings with that running game, especially if Jackson cannot get it done or is too mistake prone (ala Johnson replacing King for the Bucs). Minnesota should rap him up and he will be ready about week 7 if it isn't working with the young guy.

I think Pennington should steer clear of Carolina or the Bears, as those teams o-line are so bad, it is just stepping in front of a different gun. Minnesota or maybe some place like KC would be better.

i find it hard to believe carolina's line is anywhere near as bad as chicago's - gross, otah, wharton and kalil are all young players with plenty of upside. tho they are built for power running, not pass pro.

"It was very interesting to hear him say, 'Let's have a lot of fun.' A guy who's been in the league that long, first thing that came out of his mouth was 'Let's have a lot of fun.'"

three weeks pass...

the adalius thomas sack was great. leon washington looked like a squirrel trying to block a pontiac catalina on that play.

chicago kevin, Monday, 15 September 2008 16:48 (fifteen years ago) link

that sack was hilarious. it was a 20 yard loss, most of which was made up by Thomas carrying them backwards. i was praying for them to reach the end zone. i think Favre actually fumbled it as they collapsed at the end, but Washington - who hadn't touched the ground for about 15 yards - managed to pounce on it.

the pats didn't even look that good to my untrained eyes, but farvropolitan looked terrible. serious mad bomber, happy feet...whatever cliche you want to use for a qb playing not so good.

j.q higgins, Monday, 15 September 2008 20:02 (fifteen years ago) link

pats d isn't as quick as it could be which is one reason they give up a lot of yards. but they are skilled which is why they don't give up a lot of points, when they get down to the red zone and don't have to cover as much ground they become a little more stout.

chicago kevin, Monday, 15 September 2008 20:21 (fifteen years ago) link

i'm sure they're skilled and they're most certainly well-coached, but they haven't really played anyone approaching good, have they?

j.q higgins, Monday, 15 September 2008 20:25 (fifteen years ago) link

and they certainly weren't playing that great yesterday, regardless of their normal talent set.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 15 September 2008 20:28 (fifteen years ago) link

Pats played a sensible, no-risk game against a team they knew they could contain on defense. the only time i was concerned on either side of the ball was when Cassel kept getting sacked over and over again in the 3rd quarter, like he needed 30 seconds to make a pass. but i was impressed that all that time he didn't do anything stupid with the ball.

the biggest question mark was over Maroney. a lot of running backs had bad weekends and he was down there with the worst of them.

the regular season is what, 10 days old?

chicago kevin, Monday, 15 September 2008 20:42 (fifteen years ago) link

and they certainly weren't playing that great yesterday, regardless of their normal talent set.

no, they weren't great but they weren't terrible either. the biggest blunder i can recall was the moss(?) catch across the middle of the field. run defense was acceptable, esp. when it was apparent they were defending against the pass every down. i definitely do not like it when a defense plays down to the level of their opponent though, makes it too hard to ratchet it up against a good team.

one thing i noticed yesterday about the pats defensive rotation, jerod mayo was the only linebacker in every package. maybe because he's the only one with an age lower than his uniform number but he was in there the whole f'ing game.

chicago kevin, Monday, 15 September 2008 20:47 (fifteen years ago) link

you are too defensive! we're just saying, they looked average. not bad. not good. just ok.* no blunders but nothing special either, and the main reason the jets looked really bad was less to do with great defense than it was to do with st. brett being a mental patient.

* this is because they are all john mccain's age, obviously.

ugh, i am terribly familiar with teams playing down to the level of their opponent, i was worried the stupid giants were going to do that yesterday and just squeak out this small victory against a team as terrible as the damned rams because that is what they ALWAYS do but hurrah someone woke the dummies up.

anyway, it is not like the ancient status of their defense is going to give them a .500 or less record, i mean wouldn't worry if i was you. hell, the only reason you might not win the division is because buffalo is suddenly thinking it is awesome for some reason.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 15 September 2008 21:12 (fifteen years ago) link

but mainly i think the reason everyone is pointing out that the pats weren't looking tooooo hot yesterday is because everyone loves it when brett favre goes into "touched" mode.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 15 September 2008 21:12 (fifteen years ago) link

schef, we're saying the same thing, the pats d did what they always do, give up huge gains then hold on for dear life in the red zone.

the d kind of reminds me of the 2005 pats where they tried to turn it on and turn it off like a faucet despite there never being one team in the history of the league to have had any success at doing that. THAT concerns me more than the loss of brady actually. at least you know the o-line and qb won't be taking any plays off.

chicago kevin, Monday, 15 September 2008 21:18 (fifteen years ago) link

i think that their d has been better than this, previously. but they are so olllldddd that i feel bad for them, sometimes. and yes, agreed re: brady.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 15 September 2008 21:24 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah it definitely has been. the d-backfield isn't as bad as i feared it would be going into the season though.

luckily for them they have a bye week in miami coming up then have week 4 off.

chicago kevin, Monday, 15 September 2008 21:26 (fifteen years ago) link

lol miami when will they get kicked out of the league already?
