The Leopard is on at 2 AM.

So August is the month where they showcase a star a day. Just scrolling through and Toshiro Mifune is August 9.

High and Low?

dan selzer, Tuesday, 31 July 2012 14:24 (eleven years ago) link

I don't see it, though my guide cuts out at 3 am.

Drunken Angel, Rashomon, Seven Samurai, Throne of Blood, Yojimbo, Red Beard, Samurai Trilogy, and Samurai Rebellion.

i'm recording tarzan the ape man (weissmuller's first time in the role)

Mordy, Thursday, 2 August 2012 16:21 (eleven years ago) link

i think tarzan and his mate is supposed to be really good too

Mordy, Thursday, 2 August 2012 16:23 (eleven years ago) link

The skinny-dipping scene is certainly worth seeing at least once. (/dirtyoldman)

three weeks pass...

I've never seen Singin' in the Rain, so tonight's my chance.

Bobby-fil-A (WmC), Thursday, 23 August 2012 18:15 (eleven years ago) link

long overdue imo

"Batshit crazy," the foam clog tycoon said. (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 23 August 2012 19:22 (eleven years ago) link

followed by inherit the wind!

Mordy, Thursday, 23 August 2012 21:29 (eleven years ago) link

This was absolutely great and I'm glad I watched it, but probably wouldn't make my top 100 films. There were some surprising occasions of camera shakiness/juddering during a few dolly or crane shots.

Bobby-fil-A (WmC), Friday, 24 August 2012 15:25 (eleven years ago) link

I can give you a list of 20 better musicals. Sometime.

There were some surprising occasions of camera shakiness/juddering during a few dolly or crane shots.

That's my favorite thing about old crane shots!

Eric H., Friday, 24 August 2012 16:10 (eleven years ago) link

Morbs, I look forward to that list! Would A Hard Day's Night be on it?

Bobby-fil-A (WmC), Friday, 24 August 2012 16:24 (eleven years ago) link

not *strictly* a musical, probably a better film tho

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Friday, 24 August 2012 16:29 (eleven years ago) link

I'd like to see that list too tho kjb obv the ilx movie musical expert

Mordy, Friday, 24 August 2012 16:30 (eleven years ago) link

except in a few cases, characters must sing in non-performance scenes (only great exception I can think of is Cabaret)

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Friday, 24 August 2012 16:30 (eleven years ago) link

anyway w/ MGM you can start w/ Meet Me in St Louis, Gigi, An American in Paris, and The Band Wagon.

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Friday, 24 August 2012 16:33 (eleven years ago) link

I've seen all four! We watched invitation to the dance (I think that was the title) during the Astaire block the other day. Very weird & not very good

Mordy, Friday, 24 August 2012 16:34 (eleven years ago) link

isn't that Kelly?

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Friday, 24 August 2012 16:36 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, that's Kelly, and was on yesterday afternoon. I watched the first segment of it and was boggled by Claire Sombert's muscles.

Bobby-fil-A (WmC), Friday, 24 August 2012 16:40 (eleven years ago) link

Yes thx

Mordy, Friday, 24 August 2012 18:14 (eleven years ago) link

these films are all equally great you shameless curmudgeons

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Friday, 24 August 2012 18:30 (eleven years ago) link

I'm just lashing out bc Singing In The Rain got besmirched, tbh

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 24 August 2012 18:33 (eleven years ago) link

I like all the other suggestions just fine, btw. Gigi is the only one I've no use for.

Eric H., Friday, 24 August 2012 18:35 (eleven years ago) link

Minnelli's great when he's on, but he's not the ONLY awesome musical director out there.

Eric H., Friday, 24 August 2012 18:35 (eleven years ago) link

prefer Hermione Baddeley to Hermione Gingold, eh? xp

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Friday, 24 August 2012 18:37 (eleven years ago) link

well there's also Love Me Tonight for all you Chevalier bashers

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0023158/soundtrack

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Friday, 24 August 2012 18:39 (eleven years ago) link

(I believe that's Stephin Merritt's choice for #1 and he's seen plenty)

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Friday, 24 August 2012 18:39 (eleven years ago) link

That's a great movie. Watch it if you haven't seen it.

(I like Hermione Gingold tons in The Music Man.)

Eric H., Friday, 24 August 2012 18:48 (eleven years ago) link

Love Me Tonight's opening rhythms-of-the-city is like '30s Stomp.

Eric H., Friday, 24 August 2012 18:49 (eleven years ago) link

oh, I've seen it.

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Friday, 24 August 2012 18:51 (eleven years ago) link

i think i'd go with The Band Wagon maybe

The muted sensation feels amazeballs. (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 25 August 2012 01:48 (eleven years ago) link

Meet Me in St Louis, Gigi, An American in Paris, and The Band Wagon

I believe there are 4 'stars' of this group of films who are still alive.

one month passes...

it’s with great honor that I report to you that an hour’s worth of rare silent-era animation from my collection will be airing on Turner Classic Movies, *tonight*, at 12am eastern/9pm pacific. For this very special and long overdue broadcast event, we’ve curated several rare, once-thought-lost, historically significant or just downright funny cartoons produced in New York City between 1907 and 1926. That’s not all, though--TCM host Robert Osborne, with Jerry Beck co-hosting, are also presenting both Fleischer features, a block of UPA cartoons, and The Adventures of Prince Achmed in addition to the early NYC shorts.

It’s not to be missed! I hope some or many of you can tune in or set your DVR in time. Important links pertaining to this event below...
