sf already done (although livberty city was too, i guess) glasgow???? come on. That other gta like game has already covered london. my bet: chicago

the thing about Chicago is that for people outside America there isn't really a definable image of Chicago. E.g. I could tell you literally nothing about Chicago whereas I could tell you all the boroughs of New York and their geographical placement as well as a number of landmarks without having ever been there.

Women can be captains too, you know? (jim), Thursday, 22 January 2009 15:05 (fifteen years ago) link

the game is so tied to american gansta movie shit i dont think theyll ever take it abroad - if it took place in lagos or rio or wherever the culture just wouldnt be there

ice cr?m, Thursday, 22 January 2009 15:06 (fifteen years ago) link

xpost. ike in GTA 4 going over whatever they called the Queensboro bridge in to Dukes and saying to myself, "hey, there's the Queensbridge Houses". Same thing wouldn't happen in a Chicago based game.

And yeah, it is tied to American gangsta movie shit, plus I think wherever it is would at least have to be anglophone, having it in Rio with all these dudes doing crap accents would be rough.

i miss the period detail of earlier GTAs - would love to see 70s/60s game, tho i guess that might turn off legion of teen GTAers...

glasgow wd be tight but they'd have to artificially up the immigrant no.s

gta: deadwood

set phasers to stan (cozwn), Thursday, 22 January 2009 15:23 (fifteen years ago) link

a whole bunch of 20s-50s gangsta games have been huge disappointments so maybe a GTA could do it right. 20s Chicago might work. "might feature rub-a-dub and flappers" etc

xp ok now that one i like

MIRV Griffin (goole), Thursday, 22 January 2009 15:23 (fifteen years ago) link

I'd be surprised if they didn't do London at some point

burt_stanton, Thursday, 22 January 2009 15:25 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh yeah, and even people in the US don't know anything about Chicago... unless you're from the Midwest.

burt_stanton, Thursday, 22 January 2009 15:26 (fifteen years ago) link

london was already subject of one of the pre-3d grand theft autos

MIRV Griffin (goole), Thursday, 22 January 2009 15:29 (fifteen years ago) link

london is a possibility but dudes are OTM that they will never / should never do it in a non-english country, wouldn't be the same.

s1ocki, Thursday, 22 January 2009 15:33 (fifteen years ago) link

Wouldn't be the same as having a game set in America, in which every single character speaks using UK English idiosyncrasies

antexit, Thursday, 22 January 2009 16:12 (fifteen years ago) link

I think the colonies have long since developed their own charactersitic idiosyncrasies.

throwbookatface (skygreenleopard), Thursday, 22 January 2009 20:30 (fifteen years ago) link

There was this game that existed around the same time as the pre-3D GTAs called Driver.

The first one was set in Miami/SF/LA/NYC but the second was set in Chicago, Havana, Las Vegas and Rio.

I played the hell out of these 2 games. Good times.

The LA part of San Andreas was amazing, I think they should do LA again revamped.

Ant Attack.. (Ste), Thursday, 22 January 2009 21:47 (fifteen years ago) link

Tokyo would be super-hott -- yakuza, geishas, neon motocycles, mechas. Shinjuku would be total eyeporn overload.

Also: Putin-era Moscow!!

Leee, Thursday, 22 January 2009 23:28 (fifteen years ago) link

Imagine if they did a Hong Kong or Japan gangster movie homage game? (Though this may be happening in part through the Chinatown Wars game, which I am looking forward to more than I thought I would) A Rockstar-realized Tokyo or HK would be incredible, though I admit having it fully acted and written in English might be weird. I like the Prohibition-era idea, too.

Nhex, Friday, 23 January 2009 01:21 (fifteen years ago) link

San Andreas * GTA IV grimness - happy fun-time wacko missions would be depressing, though.

GUN was an attempt at a GTA:Deadwood style game but i dont think anybody ever played it. also it was wasn't good.

It was ALMOST good though. There wasn't anything to do in the world, and it felt very linear. You take that template and actually make a real cowboy game with open plains and buried treasure and indian attacks and I would play the shit out of it.

It should of course be set in the 2015 Hill Valley from Back to the Future II.

When ideas like a time-travelling GTA seem like a good idea to me, I know I should be working for the Sonic Team.

CraigG, Friday, 23 January 2009 16:28 (fifteen years ago) link

GTA: Tokyo would be hella stupid, I fear. Maybe if they teamed up with a Japanese developer it could work.

Super Cub, Sunday, 25 January 2009 19:53 (fifteen years ago) link

Shit, make it the whole USA, set it in Prohibition and run moonshine from mexico in Texas and California, from appalachian stills to the midwest, from canada into NY, Chicago and Seattle, from Cuba into Florida (GTBoat?)

All y'all crying out for a Proper Gangsters GTA know that there's a sequel on the way to Mafia (which is a apparently both quite good and not confused with Godfather the video game by anyone except me)?

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 26 January 2009 10:27 (fifteen years ago) link

why would anyone set a game in montreal

mad loli vamp bone (cankles), Monday, 26 January 2009 10:35 (fifteen years ago) link

Manchester 1990 would be ace. Hacienda, Afflecks Palace, big fuckoff flares, triad. A feature length prequel to the Maccer (Shaun Ryder) story from San Andrea.

tomofthenest, Monday, 26 January 2009 14:19 (fifteen years ago) link

Andreas even.

Also would need trippy Jeff Noon side-stories.
