haha. oh yeah buffalo, i do remember you mentioning that! i wasn't sure if you lived there now or was just from there.
i love mount vernon, used to work there. my fav place to live that i actually lived was butchers hill/upper fells point, which is prob pricier now, we kind of lucked into really low rent there. but yeah public trans is weak, not a great city to get around in w/o a car.

we have a great water taxi btw

Hampden's a good choice if you're looking for something a little more colorful. Mix of white blue collar and younger, hipper folks. Lots of neat shops, bars, restaurants all clustered together around "The Avenue". John Waters' part of town.

haha harbl i was trying so hard not to bump this thread all HARBL BE MY FRIEND I'M MOVING TO BALTIMORE. but, HARBLE BE MY FRIEND I'M MOVING TO BALTIMORE.
― horseshoe, Friday, 20 July 2012 23:17 (eleven years ago) link
i meant harbl, not harble of course.
mt vernon, hampden and charles village are all good affordable places to start with. i second the butchers hill/upper fells love but for car owners parking there seems to be insane
― am0n, Friday, 20 July 2012 23:19 (eleven years ago) link
i will have a car but i would like to try to be virtuous, especially because it's impossible to be virtuous in buffalo. however bad baltimore public transportation system is, buffalo's is worse.

my friend told me about a place where actors live during the winter or something but that the landlord leases out as cheap, single-person living space that's right across from a courthouse or something?
anyway baltimore is p swell I visited a friend there last year or two years ago and we went to a science museum and they had this thing where you could speak into a big funnel and a person standing 10 feet away could hear you like you were standing right next to them p.s. it wasn't a telephone
― dayo, Saturday, 21 July 2012 00:12 (eleven years ago) link
lol dayo i went to the maryland science center a billion times as a kid and was obsessed with that thing

if you want more space, a slightly more suburban setting still close to downtown and some allright neighborhood bars and restaurants etc check out hamilton/ lauraville. big houses probably some cheap rents for like a floor of a divided house or something.

I miss Baltimore, loved Hampden! Had an awesome liquor store. It seemed like it had curators, not buyers. I think it was called Wine Source.
― *tera, Saturday, 21 July 2012 15:46 (eleven years ago) link
yes i love the wine source

^^^this is a good place
I think Baltimore is DC's Williamsburg. Or maybe DC's Philly.
― quincie, Sunday, 22 July 2012 00:32 (eleven years ago) link
I like it very much, I should say, and would be happy to live there if I worked there. I do not like it so much that I am willing to endure a daily B'more to DC commute.
― quincie, Sunday, 22 July 2012 00:33 (eleven years ago) link
I am commuting here to Baltimore from Silver Spring (but not like Downtown Silver Spring--I am right next to the Intercounty Connector) and it has been reasonable thus far. I have partaken in very little Baltimore but it'll take a lil while before I am a) not so sad about leaving DC and b) not viewing my job as a place to escape as quickly as possible.
― Dr. (C-L), Sunday, 22 July 2012 00:43 (eleven years ago) link
The ICC has changed my B'more commuting colleagues' lives, 'tis true.

Have friends that live in Silver Springs for work but on Fridays drive to their home in York, PA. I love how close everything is up there. Nothing like TX.
― *tera, Sunday, 22 July 2012 14:04 (eleven years ago) link
^^^^agree, having also lived in TX.
― quincie, Monday, 23 July 2012 00:02 (eleven years ago) link
i disagree never having been to texas because my baltannap commute is 10 billion times too long
― kneel aurmstrong (harbl), Monday, 23 July 2012 01:59 (eleven years ago) link
balt/d.c. area has some of the worst traffic in the country (ESPECIALLY around silver spring) but i totally appreciate being in a region where there's so much stuff clustered together compared the more spread out landscapes elsewhere

are the apartments for rent in mt. vernon mostly high-rise? that's the impression i'm getting hunting online, but i wonder if it will be different when i actually get to town?
― horseshoe, Tuesday, 24 July 2012 13:06 (eleven years ago) link
there are some high rises but rowhouses split up into apartments are more common. depends what listings you're looking at.
― am0n, Tuesday, 24 July 2012 16:29 (eleven years ago) link
yeah practically everything in mount vernon is a converted rowhouse, including most of the businesses

finally looking at apartments for real, and planning to come down on Sunday. mostly looking in mt vernon but i found a listing for a four-bedroom house for rent in hampden that was $1400 a month. that is crazy! it's beyond my budget but i'm going to check it out anyway because it seems like such a good deal.
― horseshoe, Monday, 30 July 2012 17:07 (eleven years ago) link
what would i even do with four bedrooms. i could have a lounge and a library and a separate office jesus.
― horseshoe, Monday, 30 July 2012 17:09 (eleven years ago) link
omg one of them could be a closet
― horseshoe, Monday, 30 July 2012 17:13 (eleven years ago) link
i am not really this frivolous irl; y'all should still hang out with me when i come to town
― horseshoe, Monday, 30 July 2012 17:14 (eleven years ago) link
come hang out with me, play in my bubble room, we can have a sleepover w/a separate room each
― , Blogger (schlump), Monday, 30 July 2012 17:40 (eleven years ago) link
haha. btw i am not really going to get a 4-bedroom house because i am just one person.
this is a long-shot but has anyone had any dealings with WLM Properties? i am trying to figure out if it is for real--they offered to hook me up with a furnished room as soon as i get into town and then an apartment when one becomes available, but they want me to make a deposit to reserve the room and i am not really comfortable doing that without seeing the room.

isn't it great that it's only $1400 though! i'm going to take another opportunity to say why would anyone live in nyc. i have never heard of wlm properties but i am skeptical. do you have a craigslist link?
― kneel aurmstrong (harbl), Wednesday, 1 August 2012 00:30 (eleven years ago) link
they do have 3 facebook likes
― kneel aurmstrong (harbl), Wednesday, 1 August 2012 00:31 (eleven years ago) link
i am skeptical, too. i think i will stick to my no money until i'm actually there policy.
and yes that hampen house rent was unbelievable! it was beautiful, too.

recs now based on recent experience - skip teh aquarium. obv. - it might be good, but an aquarium is an aquarium, and for the same price you can go to the AVAM and take a water taxi, which are much more distinctive (likewise, the Greek/Roman/Egyptian stuff at the Walters, which is free, is v good, but you can see that stuff elsewhere too). instead, go directly do not pass go to the AVAM, where the current exhibit has some great stuff. i'd say at least 1.5-2 hours. i spent twice that, including in the store. definitely play with the music box on the first floor and also the audio thing downstairs near the bathrooms (and check out the bathroom entrance on the third floor, which has the least interesting stuff). you can do water taxis out to Fells late in the day when stuff is closing and it isn't as hot out and it's beer time.― the dessert speaks (gabbneb), Saturday, May 23, 2009 11:44 AM (3 years ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalinki forgot what a fucking shithole this town is tho. and how weird it is - i'm walking up towards bolton hill and pass early 20sish black dude pushing a stroller and puffing on cig and give him the NYC checkout glance, and dude goes 'Sir'.― the dessert speaks (gabbneb), Saturday, May 23, 2009 11:51 AM (3 years ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Went back to find the penistrap post and found these choice gabbneb posts first repping hard for AVAM and water taxis, then making fun of black people.

AVAM and water taxis are good; carpetbagger racism in the Bolton Hill area sucks. Do not mix this shit up.
