I wish Star Trek replicators were real, too. You can put the dishes back in those things!

lol I've seen that atheism quote attributed to Ellen Degeneres as well

Turangalila, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 20:20 (eleven years ago) link

that seems like a pretty aggressive quote for Ellen Degeneres

PITILESS LIVE SHOW (DJP), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 20:21 (eleven years ago) link

these are worse than when facecrook was all about poking and suchlike.

fucking hate them.

yes, i may be old, and grumpy, but seriously, have a thought of your own as opposed to lazily rehashing some other poor sods.

mark e, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 20:22 (eleven years ago) link

david "tim" minichin is apparently a british celebrity by way of their australia. it sounds like that sort of thing that only a british celebrity could say.

contenderizer, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 20:25 (eleven years ago) link

lolling at "minichin"

PITILESS LIVE SHOW (DJP), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 20:30 (eleven years ago) link

he is a comedian who says things like that and then sings more things like that, while playing the piano

so I don't know if the quote really is one of his, but it sounds plausible

I think this every time I see it! "Fuck you, I was weak and dramatic and felt like this and then I got over it by being amazing instead. STFU."

"having tried to remain strong for too long"

hm, yes, what a precise and insightful diagnosis of 1 in 3 people

i mean, i get it, you shouldn't feel guilty about having mental health issues, but maybe find another way to understand it than martyrdom

real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 20:41 (eleven years ago) link

also doesnt trying to remain strong for too long imply failing to remain strong aka weakness

Fuck all the anti-mental health bullshit in this thread.

how's life, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 22:13 (eleven years ago) link

If you mean me, I'm sorry. I don't mean to hurt anyone - I just hate that because I've suffered from mental health problems in the past that I get swept in with a particular group of over sharing dramatic whiners. I didn't mean to deny they aren't real problems.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 22:39 (eleven years ago) link

Yep, and the reason you've got over it and we haven't is because you're awesome. And we're not. Thanks.

emil.y, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 22:40 (eleven years ago) link

I mean, I think that "people with mental health issues" is a pretty serious area where people are trying to address prejudice right now. From my experience, there's still a lot of general prejudice against people with mental health problems. I've only personally experienced comparatively small mental health problems myself, but know and love people with serious problems. I know that most people on ilx are progressive enough to not be all like "depressed people are just weak", but I still try to take it seriously.

how's life, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 22:47 (eleven years ago) link

No quantity of facebook memes will make me immune to the seriousness of the issue.

how's life, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 22:48 (eleven years ago) link

It was an allusion to Barney on HIMYM, e, and feel free to poke around for lots of proof that I'm not awesome and in fact have been suffering through a particularly shitty string of late. I apologized, what more can I do? I sure as hell am not going to get through it pretending that its noble to surrender yourself to misery as that meme would like me to believe.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 23:04 (eleven years ago) link

Like pretty much every day this year since April I've wondered if my very mentally ill dad has killed himself yet, and that fucks up my ability to carry on with my attempts at a normal life, and then I see that meme once a week on FB, and I think "oh fuck you."

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 23:06 (eleven years ago) link

Bah. Stressy day again. Carry on with jpegs of insipid thought, please.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 18 July 2012 23:10 (eleven years ago) link

It was an allusion to Barney on HIMYM

Okay, that went completely over my head. Apologies for not realising it was a reference. I've just heard *that* sentiment a hell of a lot more in real life than the ham-fisted but at least supportive jpg it was mocking.

emil.y, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 23:18 (eleven years ago) link

I forgot about yr dad, FFM. I also have mentally-ill, potentially suicidal relatives. But I think it's important for normal people to be able somehow to relate to crazy people. I have mental health issues, but I consider myself relatively normal, but I have to deal with so many crazy people in my day-to-day. And it's tough. But I do the best I can. And part of what makes it so tough for me is the other normal people who have very intense reactions to the ones who are fucked up.

I'm sorry for offending other people with mental health issues. As a consolation, I will now offend an entirely different group of people:
