my decidedly less exciting going-out-in-LA report tonight: there was an electrical outage near the crazy five-way intersection at sunset/hollywood/hillhurst/virgil earlier. i was gonna meet up with friends at el chavo but the power was out and they were only serving beer and shots because the freezer wasn't working (so no ice). power's back on now but the intersection's traffic lights are still just blinking red so it's a bit of a free-for-all around there atm

Yeah I been there many times. It's nice. Mr T's is there too, though I don't know if it is still open?

My current favorite NELA bar is the bar at Colombo's in Eagle Rock. Hardly anyone there under 50 besides me. Definitely my kind of place.

I like the Black Boar in Eagle Rock a lot. The DJ there every other Saturday is one of the best in town.

i have never gone drinking in eagle rock but i went to the oinkster and all-star lanes last weekend!

Not a fan of the Black Boar. It was much nicer (and far, far quieter) when it was The Chalet. Oinkster also used to be much better before they put the flatscreens in. All-Star Lanes is great though.

La Cuevita (formerly the Little Cave) has a pretty decent mezcal selection and their happy hour is 7-10 7 days a week. The Hermosillo club is pretty decent (beer & wine only).

Haha, my friend and I stood staring through the open window of Hermosillo for a few minutes debating whether to go in, the bartender staring hopelessly back at us from an empty room (it may have been "opening night" after the redesign), before deciding against it and walking off. I'm sure it's lovely though.

oinkster is opening a second location in hollywood, on vine near melrose. i wonder how the crowds will be.

zero of the signified got a tip from a friend about a great lebanese place in sun valley called jalal lebnan. we went tonight and said friend's recommendation checks out -- great shawarma, decent hummus, some nicely executed falafel that the owner threw in on the house. we were the only people in there on a saturday night, so you should go! they need customers!

(i know most of you live nowhere near sun valley. just sayin'.)

Have you been to Mantee in Studio City, and if so how does it compare? I like Mantee, but likely not as cheap as your find.

i have a food writer pal in town and at the behest of a local food enthusiast she knows we went on an insane taco crawl today:

mariscos jalisco truck in boyle heights (best shrimp taco i've ever had)
mercado olympic (we had a bunch of things here - tacos en canasta, lamb tacos, some samples of pulque and techape, squash blossom enchiladas, this dish that's basically a bunch of different fruits and chile mangos and pork skin served in a bowl with chile powder over everything, pork rinds, horchata)
ricky's fish tacos (fish taco and jamaica)
guelaguetza in koreatown (mole sampler, chilaquiles, and i had a shot of del maguey vida)

cool local band so many wizards are doing a free show next tuesday (aug 14) at origami in echo park.

Was just out in LA and my son and I had the shrimp tacos and the ceviche tostadas at this truck. Awesome.

my roommate had a groupon for honey's kettle fried chicken in culver city and between three of us we polished off $30 worth of chicken, biscuits, green beans, fries, and fried peppers. i recommend!
