i dunno how much insight i can give you on where to live not knowing your budget or your preferences or where you're gonna work etc. but i can definitely offer some general advice and my wife is a real estate buff and some other people i know are super knowledgeable about different parts of the city if you really want some help. you moving for a job?
― Barack 2 Chainz Obama (some dude), Friday, 20 July 2012 15:42 (eleven years ago) link
yes it's a teaching job--it's in baltimore county, but i would like to live in the city if possible. and live alone if possible.
― horseshoe, Friday, 20 July 2012 15:55 (eleven years ago) link
ah cool -- where? i've lived/worked/gone to school all over the county
― Barack 2 Chainz Obama (some dude), Friday, 20 July 2012 16:01 (eleven years ago) link
R4nd4llstown. Maybe silly to googleproof but I am paranoid.
I guess I could pay 1000 a month? And close to public transport would be nice.
― horseshoe, Friday, 20 July 2012 17:18 (eleven years ago) link
that's cool, r-town is nice, kinda the only suburb that is not significantly whiter than the city, and if you wanted to live in the city it would be a light commute. lot of different neighborhoods to check out depending on your priorities, i guess. it occurs to me i have no idea where you live, where you moving from?
― Barack 2 Chainz Obama (some dude), Friday, 20 July 2012 17:45 (eleven years ago) link
mt vernon is centrally located, decent rent and quick access to 83 north to get to the county
― am0n, Friday, 20 July 2012 18:24 (eleven years ago) link
have you seen that show 'the wire'
― am0n, Friday, 20 July 2012 18:45 (eleven years ago) link
My understanding is that all the men in Baltimore look like Stringer Bell.
― horseshoe, Friday, 20 July 2012 18:51 (eleven years ago) link
moving from buffalo, al
― horseshoe, Friday, 20 July 2012 18:52 (eleven years ago) link
public trans is pretty weak here and likely doesn't go where you need it to go without a lot of bus transfers
― am0n, Friday, 20 July 2012 19:05 (eleven years ago) link
but some of it is free now which is gr8
― am0n, Friday, 20 July 2012 19:18 (eleven years ago) link
A friend who used to teach in Baltimore recommended mt vernon, too, so that sounds like a plan! Thanks, guys!
― horseshoe, Friday, 20 July 2012 20:14 (eleven years ago) link
O M GGGGGGGGGGi live in mt vernon but i wanna buy a house within the year not in mt vernon. you will definitely find a good place under 1000/month.
― kneel aurmstrong (harbl), Friday, 20 July 2012 22:21 (eleven years ago) link
you will have a good reverse commute to the county too

buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo
― kneel aurmstrong (harbl), Friday, 20 July 2012 22:56 (eleven years ago) link
haha. oh yeah buffalo, i do remember you mentioning that! i wasn't sure if you lived there now or was just from there.
i love mount vernon, used to work there. my fav place to live that i actually lived was butchers hill/upper fells point, which is prob pricier now, we kind of lucked into really low rent there. but yeah public trans is weak, not a great city to get around in w/o a car.
― Barack 2 Chainz Obama (some dude), Friday, 20 July 2012 22:57 (eleven years ago) link
we have a great water taxi btw
― kneel aurmstrong (harbl), Friday, 20 July 2012 22:57 (eleven years ago) link
Hampden's a good choice if you're looking for something a little more colorful. Mix of white blue collar and younger, hipper folks. Lots of neat shops, bars, restaurants all clustered together around "The Avenue". John Waters' part of town.
― circa1916, Friday, 20 July 2012 23:09 (eleven years ago) link
haha harbl i was trying so hard not to bump this thread all HARBL BE MY FRIEND I'M MOVING TO BALTIMORE. but, HARBLE BE MY FRIEND I'M MOVING TO BALTIMORE.
― horseshoe, Friday, 20 July 2012 23:17 (eleven years ago) link
i meant harbl, not harble of course.
mt vernon, hampden and charles village are all good affordable places to start with. i second the butchers hill/upper fells love but for car owners parking there seems to be insane
― am0n, Friday, 20 July 2012 23:19 (eleven years ago) link
i will have a car but i would like to try to be virtuous, especially because it's impossible to be virtuous in buffalo. however bad baltimore public transportation system is, buffalo's is worse.
― horseshoe, Friday, 20 July 2012 23:21 (eleven years ago) link
my friend told me about a place where actors live during the winter or something but that the landlord leases out as cheap, single-person living space that's right across from a courthouse or something?
anyway baltimore is p swell I visited a friend there last year or two years ago and we went to a science museum and they had this thing where you could speak into a big funnel and a person standing 10 feet away could hear you like you were standing right next to them p.s. it wasn't a telephone
― dayo, Saturday, 21 July 2012 00:12 (eleven years ago) link
lol dayo i went to the maryland science center a billion times as a kid and was obsessed with that thing
― Barack 2 Chainz Obama (some dude), Saturday, 21 July 2012 00:28 (eleven years ago) link
if you want more space, a slightly more suburban setting still close to downtown and some allright neighborhood bars and restaurants etc check out hamilton/ lauraville. big houses probably some cheap rents for like a floor of a divided house or something.

I miss Baltimore, loved Hampden! Had an awesome liquor store. It seemed like it had curators, not buyers. I think it was called Wine Source.
― *tera, Saturday, 21 July 2012 15:46 (eleven years ago) link
yes i love the wine source

^^^this is a good place
I think Baltimore is DC's Williamsburg. Or maybe DC's Philly.
― quincie, Sunday, 22 July 2012 00:32 (eleven years ago) link
I like it very much, I should say, and would be happy to live there if I worked there. I do not like it so much that I am willing to endure a daily B'more to DC commute.
― quincie, Sunday, 22 July 2012 00:33 (eleven years ago) link
I am commuting here to Baltimore from Silver Spring (but not like Downtown Silver Spring--I am right next to the Intercounty Connector) and it has been reasonable thus far. I have partaken in very little Baltimore but it'll take a lil while before I am a) not so sad about leaving DC and b) not viewing my job as a place to escape as quickly as possible.
― Dr. (C-L), Sunday, 22 July 2012 00:43 (eleven years ago) link
The ICC has changed my B'more commuting colleagues' lives, 'tis true.

Have friends that live in Silver Springs for work but on Fridays drive to their home in York, PA. I love how close everything is up there. Nothing like TX.
― *tera, Sunday, 22 July 2012 14:04 (eleven years ago) link
^^^^agree, having also lived in TX.
― quincie, Monday, 23 July 2012 00:02 (eleven years ago) link
i disagree never having been to texas because my baltannap commute is 10 billion times too long
