From http://movies.about.com/cs/miracle/a/mrclkr012604_3.htm (talking about Miracle)

The problem I've generally found with the writing in most sports movies, and it's why I haven't done them, for the great and most part, they are written from the fan's point of view and not written from the player/coach point of view. This is what Ron Shelton and I talked about when we were talking about getting together to do a baseball movie, which he ended up doing called “Bull Durham.” The great thing about baseball, I said to him, is baseball is the only sport played by men for women. All other sports are played by men for men, that I know of. Because with baseball players, we'd just as soon have 50,000 women in the stands. We couldn't care less if there was a guy there. But football is a gladiator game, they want men chanting in the stands. Baseball players like to look good in their uniforms and run around the bases and say, “How's it going?” They want to be cool. That's what they're about. And Ron wrote it from, which in that regard was the point of view that you really need to understand baseball, the point of view of the woman who is with the ballplayer. That's the point of view to write a baseball story, which is why “Bull Durham,” I think, is one of the best made.

I don't read them often and I don't like doing them often because I know it's #1) written from a fan's point of view, #2) directed from a fan's point of view, and #3) and the most disgusting of all, played from the fan's point of view. What's good about this movie is that you've got a guy who's directing it, who's a really good football player and is not a fan of hockey. He has a player's understanding. You've got a coach who has a player’s understanding, who played baseball professionally, who's not going to look at it as a fan. And you have the guys playing the parts who are not actors that want to be hockey players. They're hockey players that were cast in a role that the director believed he could work with them as actors. So that's why the movie looks credible.

Watched Tequila Sunrise for the first time since it came out. Love triangle, but so lopsided! I was surprised by how good Mel Gibson is and--I've almost always liked him in everything--by how bad Russell is. Or at least how badly the character is written--all smarm and knowing ripostes. And his look...someone should have taken Kurt aside and said, "This moment will pass; one day, people won't remember Miami Vice, and the way you've got your hair will look thoroughly silly. Here's a comb--go fix that."

I would never have voted for it, but I gotta say his lovable overacting is the main redeeming quality of Tango and Cash - someone more leadenly playing out the slob-cop type would have combined with Stallone to make the most generic boring movie ever. Russell seems to be over in the part of the movie that has daring leaps from rooftops onto power lines and a super cop tank battling construction equipment in a demolition derby, while Stallone belongs to the script draft with the totally assembly-line Chuck Norris final showdown. Unfortunately Russell also gets all the "he's a cop who tortures suspects and GETS RESULTS - what a mischievous scamp he is!" material and ....yeah. Ugh.

he shd play himself in a movie where he investigates what the deal is w walter Disney writing his name as the last thing he did before he died

johnny crunch, Friday, 16 October 2015 18:23 (eight years ago) link

It writes itself. He goes deep into his investigation, then at the end he discovers that ... he killed Disney! Who was in debt to the Devil. It'd be like "Angel Heart" or something.

Stargate is a ridiculous and not all that fun movie, and Kurt Russell doesn't even really get to do much in it, but "GIVE MY REGARDS TA KING TUT, ASSHOLE!" is just about almost worth it.

Kind of occurred to me what an interesting late career resurgence Kurt has had. Obviously he's kept busy, but Death Proof sort of put him back on the map, or at least reintroduced him not as Kurt Russell, movie star, but as Kurt Russell, icon, where just seeing his face elicits good vibes. But yeah, Death Proof, Hateful Eight (he's not what's wrong with it), Bone Tomahawk, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and apparently he's in a couple of those Fast and Furious movies?

think his role in vanilla sky is v much a respectful nod type of a casting decision too

phil neville jacket (darraghmac), Monday, 19 August 2019 01:15 (four years ago) link

Maybe, I've never seen it. "Miracle" (a couple of years after Vanilla Sky) was arguably his last successful Movie Star role, don't you think? I don't even remember the nu-Poseidon movie.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 19 August 2019 01:24 (four years ago) link

Kurt reportedly excellent in Bone Tomahawk. Not a huge fan of the Western genre (hell, I think it's contributed to present social ills), but I could get behind cowboys vs. cannibals.
